    The impact of sexual harassment on job satisfaction, turnover intentions, and absenteeism: findings from Pakistan compared to the United States

    The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast how differences in perceptions of sexual harassment impact productive work environments for employees in Pakistan as compared to the US; in particular, how it affects job satisfaction, turnover, and/or absenteeism. This study analyzed employee responses in Pakistan (n = 146) and the United States (n = 102, 76) using questionnaire data. Significant results indicated that employees who were sexually harassed reported (a) a decrease in job satisfaction (b) greater turnover intentions and (c) a higher rate of absenteeism. Cross-cultural comparisons indicated that (a) Pakistani employees who were sexually harassed had greater job dissatisfaction and higher overall absenteeism than did their US counterparts and (b) Pakistani women were more likely to use indirect strategies to manage sexual harassment than were US targets

    Turn-over orbital septal flap and levator recession for upper-eyelid retraction secondary to thyroid eye disease

    BackgroundA turn-over septal flap has been reported as a spacer for levator lengthening in a single case report. This study reports the preliminary outcomes of this technique in a series of patients with upper-lid retraction (ULR) associated with thyroid eye disease (TED) causing symptomatic exposure keratopathy (EK).MethodsRetrospective, multicenter study of 12 eyelids of 10 patients with TED undergoing a transcutaneous levator-lengthening technique using the reflected orbital septum (OS) as a spacer. Change in palpebral aperture (PA) and contour, position of the skin crease (SC), symptoms of EK, and complications were recorded.ResultsThe average age was 47.5 years. Two patients were excluded, as their septa were found to be very thin at surgery. At an average of 13 months postoperatively, the PA was reduced by 2.5 mm on average (PConclusionsThe turn-over orbital septal flap technique may be a viable option as an autogenous spacer for the treatment of ULR in TED.     Paramagnetic fluorinated nanoemulsions for sensitive cellular fluorine-19 magnetic resonance imaging

    Fluorine-19 magnetic resonance imaging ((19)F MRI) probes enable quantitative in vivo detection of cell therapies and inflammatory cells. Here, we describe the formulation of perfluorocarbon-based nanoemulsions with improved sensitivity for cellular MRI. Reduction of the (19)F spin-lattice relaxation time (T(1)) enables rapid imaging and an improved signal-to-noise ratio, thereby improving cell detection sensitivity. We synthesized metal-binding β-diketones conjugated to linear perfluoropolyether (PFPE), formulated these fluorinated ligands as aqueous nanoemulsions, and then metalated them with various transition and lanthanide ions in the fluorous phase. Iron(III) tris-β-diketonate ('FETRIS') nanoemulsions with PFPE have low cytotoxicity (<20%) and superior MRI properties. Moreover, the (19)F T(1) can readily be reduced by an order of magnitude and tuned by stoichiometric modulation of the iron concentration. The resulting (19)F MRI detection sensitivity is enhanced by 3-to-5 fold over previously used tracers at 11.7 T, and is predicted to increase by at least 8-fold at clinical field strength of 3 T
