    Truncated states obtained by iteration

Quantum states of the electromagnetic field are of considerable importance, finding potential application in various areas of physics, as diverse as solid state physics, quantum communication and cosmology. In this paper we introduce the concept of truncated states obtained via iterative processes (TSI) and study its statistical features, making an analogy with dynamical systems theory (DST). As a specific example, we have studied TSI for the doubling and the logistic functions, which are standard functions in studying chaos. TSI for both the doubling and logistic functions exhibit certain similar patterns when their statistical features are compared from the point of view of DST. A general method to engineer TSI in the running-wave domain is employed, which includes the errors due to the nonidealities of detectors and photocounts.Comment: 10 pages, 22 figure

Exploring new ways of integration, visualization and interaction with Geotechnical and Geophysical Data

    Get PDF
The work presented in this paper aims at exploring new ways of integrating, visualizing and interacting with geotechnical and geophysical data that may be more rich and interactive than those offered by most current Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Some visualization techniques enabling simultaneous visualization of the several data types available in our case study are proposed. Moreover, methods were developed to guide experts while defining layers and other relevant geological structures. The work is still in an early stage and is main goal has been assessing the validity and adequacy of the proposed techniques to the specific geotechnical and geophysical data under consideration.Universidade de Aveiro e Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branc

Semiclassical spatial correlations in chaotic wave functions

We study the spatial autocorrelation of energy eigenfunctions ψn(q)\psi_n({\bf q}) corresponding to classically chaotic systems in the semiclassical regime. Our analysis is based on the Weyl-Wigner formalism for the spectral average Cϵ(q+,q,E)C_{\epsilon}({\bf q^{+}},{\bf q^{-}},E) of ψn(q+)ψn(q)\psi_n({\bf q}^{+})\psi_n^*({\bf q}^{-}), defined as the average over eigenstates within an energy window ϵ\epsilon centered at EE. In this framework CϵC_{\epsilon} is the Fourier transform in momentum space of the spectral Wigner function W(x,E;ϵ)W({\bf x},E;\epsilon). Our study reveals the chord structure that CϵC_{\epsilon} inherits from the spectral Wigner function showing the interplay between the size of the spectral average window, and the spatial separation scale. We discuss under which conditions is it possible to define a local system independent regime for CϵC_{\epsilon}. In doing so, we derive an expression that bridges the existing formulae in the literature and find expressions for Cϵ(q+,q,E)C_{\epsilon}({\bf q^{+}}, {\bf q^{-}},E) valid for any separation size q+q|{\bf q^{+}}-{\bf q^{-}}|.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PR

Cleaner production for achieving the sustainable development goals

    Get PDF
Cleaner production is a lively concept in which new procedures and technologies constantly emerge introducing methods and practices to prevent damages to the environment. A broad range of cleaner production initiatives contribute to sustainable development not only through the efficient management of resources and energy, but also through the development of new and smart technologies, new ways of assisting policies development, and organizing supply chains, sectors and individual companies. The authors of this Virtual Special Issue sought to introduce first-hand knowledge and discussions identifying and highlighting the ways cleaner production can contribute to reach the United Nations sustainable development targets. The intent of the Virtual Special Issue is to provide an overview of the recent trends that cleaner production practitioners/researchers are following in the chase of the sustainable development goals, and in this context, this editorial was designed to summarize and underscore the link between cleaner production concepts and practices and the sustainable development goals. An adequate response to this challenge required scientific knowledge and reassessment of the papers ensuring that the science is responsive to the evolving needs of sustainable development. This Virtual Special Issue of the Journal of Cleaner Production is mainly dedicated to the 7th International Workshop on Advances in Cleaner Production, held at Universidad de La Costa, Barranquilla, Colombia on 21–22 June 2018. Based upon the examination of the papers of this Virtual Special Issue, the authors were able to establish that there is an pressing need for research on the assessment on which/when cleaner production interventions are more effective; inter and multidisciplinary cooperation among social and technical scientists to distinguish and address the cleaner production/sustainable development goals interactions and connect cleaner production solutions and large-scale sustainability approaches
