Interoperability and Standards: The Way for Innovative Design in Networked Working Environments

paradigm where companies focus on core competencies and skills, as creative design, manufacturing, or
selling. However, achieving seamless interoperability is an ongoing challenge these networks are facing,
due to their distributed and heterogeneous nature. Part of the solution relies on adoption of standards for
design and product data representation, but for sectors predominantly characterized by SMEs, such as the
furniture sector, implementations need to be tailored to reduce costs. This paper recommends a set of best
practices for the fast adoption of the ISO funStep standard modules and presents a framework that enables

Dependence of Dust Obscuration on Star Formation Rates in Galaxies
Many investigations of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies have explored
details of dust obscuration, with a number of recent analyses suggesting that
obscuration appears to increase in systems with high rates of star formation.
To date these analyses have been primarily based on nearby (z < 0.03) or UV
selected samples. Using 1.4 GHz imaging and optical spectroscopic data from the
Phoenix Deep Survey, the SFR-dependent obscuration is explored. The use of a
radio selected sample shows that previous studies exploring SFR-dependent
obscurations have been biased against obscured galaxies. The observed relation
between obscuration and SFR is found to be unsuitable to be used as an
obscuration measure for individual galaxies. Nevertheless, it is shown to be
successful as a first order correction for large samples of galaxies where no
other measure of obscuration is available, out to intermediate redshifts (z ~

Metallicity inhomogeneities in local star-forming galaxies as sign of recent metal-poor gas accretion
We measure the oxygen metallicity of the ionized gas along the major axis of
seven dwarf star-forming galaxies. Two of them, SDSSJ1647+21 and SDSSJ2238+14,
show 0.5 dex metallicity decrements in inner regions with enhanced
star-formation activity. This behavior is similar to the metallicity drop
observed in a number of local tadpole galaxies by Sanchez Almeida et al. (2013)
and interpreted as showing early stages of assembling in disk galaxies, with
the star formation sustained by external metal-poor gas accretion. The
agreement with tadpoles has several implications: (1) it proves that galaxies
other than the local tadpoles present the same unusual metallicity pattern. (2)
Our metallicity inhomogeneities were inferred using the direct method, thus
discarding systematic errors usually attributed to other methods. (3) Taken
together with the tadpole data, our findings suggest a threshold around one
tenth the solar value for the metallicity drops to show up. Although galaxies
with clear metallicity drops are rare, the physical mechanism responsible for
them may sustain a significant part of the star-formation activity in the local
Universe. We argue that the star-formation dependence of the mass-metallicity
relationship, as well as other general properties followed by most local disk
galaxies, are naturally interpreted as side effects of pristine gas infall.

Tameness of pseudovariety joins involving R
2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 20M07 (primary); 20M05, 20M35, 68Q70 (secondary).In this paper, we establish several decidability results for pseudovariety joins of the form VvW, where V is a subpseudovariety of J or the pseudovariety R. Here, J (resp. R) denotes the pseudovariety of all J-trivial (resp. R-trivial) semigroups. In particular, we show that the pseudovariety VvW is (completely) kappa-tame when V is a subpseudovariety of J with decidable kappa-word problem and W is (completely) kappa-tame. Moreover, if W is a kappa-tame pseudovariety which satisfies the pseudoidentity x_1...x_ry^{\omega+1}zt^\omega = x_1... x_ryzt^\omega, then we
prove that RvW is also kappa-tame.

The Phoenix Deep Survey: spectroscopic catalog
The Phoenix Deep Survey is a multi-wavelength survey based on deep 1.4 GHz
radio imaging, reaching well into the sub-100 microJy level. One of the aims of
this survey is to characterize the sub-mJy radio population, exploring its
nature and evolution. In this paper we present the catalog and results of the
spectroscopic observations aimed at characterizing the optically ``bright''
(R<~ 21.5 mag) counterparts of faint radio sources. Out of 371 sources with
redshift determination, 21% have absorption lines only, 11% show AGN
signatures, 32% are star-forming galaxies, 34% show narrow emission lines that
do not allow detailed spectral classification (due to poor signal-to-noise
ratio and/or lack of diagnostic emission lines) and the remaining 2% are
identified with stars. For the star-forming galaxies with a Balmer decrement
measurement we find a median extinction of A(Ha)=1.9 mag, higher than that of
optically selected samples. This is a result of the radio selection, which is
not biased against dusty systems. Using the available spectroscopic
information, we estimate the radio luminosity function of star-forming galaxies
in two independent redshift bins at z~0.1 and 0.3 respectively. We find direct
evidence for strong luminosity evolution of these systems consistent with L(1.4

Recording from two neurons: second order stimulus reconstruction from spike trains and population coding
We study the reconstruction of visual stimuli from spike trains, recording
simultaneously from the two H1 neurons located in the lobula plate of the fly
Chrysomya megacephala. The fly views two types of stimuli, corresponding to
rotational and translational displacements. If the reconstructed stimulus is to
be represented by a Volterra series and correlations between spikes are to be
taken into account, first order expansions are insufficient and we have to go
to second order, at least. In this case higher order correlation functions have
to be manipulated, whose size may become prohibitively large. We therefore
develop a Gaussian-like representation for fourth order correlation functions,
which works exceedingly well in the case of the fly. The reconstructions using
this Gaussian-like representation are very similar to the reconstructions using
the experimental correlation functions. The overall contribution to rotational
stimulus reconstruction of the second order kernels - measured by a chi-squared
averaged over the whole experiment - is only about 8% of the first order
contribution. Yet if we introduce an instant-dependent chi-square to measure
the contribution of second order kernels at special events, we observe an up to
100% improvement. As may be expected, for translational stimuli the
reconstructions are rather poor. The Gaussian-like representation could be a
valuable aid in population coding with large number of neurons
Closures of regular languages for profinite topologies
The Pin-Reutenauer algorithm gives a method, that can be viewed as a descriptive procedure, to compute the closure in the free group of a regular language with respect to the Hall topology. A similar descriptive procedure is shown to hold for the
pseudovariety A of aperiodic semigroups, where the closure is taken in the free aperiodic omega-semigroup. It is inherited by a
subpseudovariety of a given pseudovariety if both of them enjoy the property of being full. The pseudovariety A, as well as some of
its subpseudovarieties are shown to be full. The interest in such descriptions stems from the fact that, for each of the main pseudovarieties V in our examples, the closures of two regular languages are disjoint if and only if the languages can be separated by a language whose syntactic semigroup lies in V. In the cases of A and of the pseudovariety DA of semigroups in which all regular elements are idempotents, this is a new result.PESSOA French-Portuguese project
