Annual Survey of Florida Law - Legal Ethics
During the survey period The Florida Bar saw some things remain the same in legal ethics and discipline: many, many lawyers neglected their clients, misappropriated their clients\u27 funds or otherwise abused their clients, and a number of lawyers had sanctions imposed on them personally outside of discipline proceedings for persisting in frivolous litigation or handling litigation in a dilatory manner
Addressing the elderly as audience: the ethical responsibilities of writers and companies
The elderly population, one of the fastest growing age groups in the United States, is an audience that technical writers have not addressed. To argue the importance of addressing the elderly as audience, this thesis poses three research questions: How do elderly individuals read and respond to documents they are typically expected to use? How can technical communicators write and design documents for the elderly, and why should they be concerned with this audience? What ethical responsibilities do both writers and their companies have to make information more accessible to the elderly audience? A literature review of technical communications and other disciplines indicates that changes often do occur with aging-changes that could impact reading and comprehension To test that impact, 16 healthy, active elderly subjects, aged 65 to 90, were asked to answer questions from two Medicare supplemental insurance policies. Data were obtained from pre- and post-test interviews, transcripts of think-aloud protocols, and observations. Based upon the results of the testing, guidelines are listed for technical communicators to follow when writing and designing documents for the elderly audience. Additional research is suggested to further expand the list of guidelines. Demographic information on the growing number of elderly supports the importance of studying this population. Finally, a review of stockholder, stakeholder, or social responsibility theories of business ethics shows that each theory can be used to argue that writers and their companies have an ethical responsibility to the elderly. Logical, economical, and ethical arguments are given for why technical writers can and should recognize the elderly as an important audience for many of their documents
Scanning Tunnel Microscopy studies of tetrahedrally bonded materials
The Scanning Tunnel Microscope (STM) is a surface analysis tool that has been used to study the geometric and electronic properties of metals, semimetals and semiconductors. Evaporated gold deposited on glass was examined as a preliminary test of the McAllister/RHK STM. Calibration of the STM system was accomplished by imaging annealed pyrolytic graphite (APG), but with surprising results. The peak spacing agreed with the accepted value for STM graphite images of 2.46 A, but the shape of the peaks were often distorted. These distortions can be understood in view of the theoretical work of Kobayashi and Tsukada on the effects of tip orbitals on tunneling images;Surface features of ionized cluster beam (ICB) grown germanium films were examined as a function of cleaning methods, annealing, and film growth under a variety of imaging conditions using two different tunnel microscopes. Cleaning and annealing were both found to reduce the overall roughness of surface features, while island growth was observed to have no apparent dependence on the deposition conditions, except for film thickness
Voluntary simplicity : an organizational analysis
People who live in the modem western society enjoy the benefits of a post modern” life and also reap the negative consequences. Environmental degradation, intrusion of public entities into private life, and alienation are just a few. The purpose of this descriptive study was to analyze organizations that were members of a network promoting voluntary simplicity. New social movement theory guided this study. A survey was mailed to organizations across the US and 97 were returned. Data analyzed included organizational characteristics, goals, tactics and style of participation. Ideology of organizations and changes over time were also addressed. Specifically, organizations\u27 orientations regarding four issues were studied; expressive/instrumental; fighting intrusion of public entities into private areas of life; prefigurative/active tactical style and the importance of democratic process and member input. Results indicated that while the organizations used expressive tactics, goals were fairly equally distributed between expressive and instrumental aims. Goals were more focused on addressing social justice issues than preventing intrusion. A prefigurative style was found in the area of tactics. The importance of democratic process and the importance of member involvement were each compared to the importance of outcomes/successes. Democratic process scores were higher than outcome scores, but the difference between the two was not statistically significant; member involvement scores were also higher than outcome scores, but here the difference was found to be statistically significant. Paired t-tests and the Wilcoxon non-parametric test were used in this study. Organizational characteristics such as age and size (budget, number of employees and number of members) were presented, as well as the presence of a spiritual focus and religious affiliation. Qualitative reports were compiled on ideology and in the area of changes over time. The findings of this study are important to social work for several reasons. In the area of social change, tactics and organizational functioning are examined. Voluntary simplicity also has implications for individual and community well being

WebQuest investigation to acquire internet usage skills
The purpose of this project was to develop a WebQuesst investigation that would facilitate student Internet usage. A WebQuest investigation is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information that learners interact with comes from resources on the Internet
Gender Studies and Teacher Education: A Proposal
Although gender studies have become a central concern in Canadian universities through women’s studies programs or programs in feminist theory, they have not influenced courses and programs in faculties of education to the extent they should. We propose the “mainstreaming” of gender studies and argue that courses and programs should be reconceived and reconstructed to incorporate the findings and approaches developed in feminist and women’s studies. We talk of “gender studies” because, unlike “women’s studies,” we are not advocating a separatist strategy and do not propose a particular theoretical framework, as may be suggested by “feminist” theory. We justify mainstream- ing gender studies in teacher education programs because they can contribute to the general education of teacher candidates and can help develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills central to the practice of teaching.
