Multisensory Analysis of Consumer-Product Interaction During Ceramic Tile Shopping Experiences
[EN] The need to design products that engage several senses has being increasingly recognised by design
and marketing professionals. Many works analyse the impact of sensory stimuli on the hedonic,
cognitive, and emotional responses of consumers, as well as on their satisfaction and intention to purchase.
However, there is much less information about the utilitarian dimension related to a sensory
non-reflective analysis of the tangible elements of the experience, the sequential role played by different
senses, and their relative importance. This work analyses the sensorial dimension of consumer
interactions in shops. Consumers were filmed in two ceramic tile shops and their behaviour was
analysed according to a previously validated checklist. Sequence of actions, their frequency of occurrence,
and the duration of inspections were recorded, and consumers were classified according to
their sensory exploration strategies. Results show that inspection patterns are intentional but shifting
throughout the interaction. Considering the whole sequence, vision is the dominant sense followed
by touch. However, sensory dominance varies throughout the sequence. The dominance differences
appear between all senses and within the senses of vision, touch and audition. Cluster analysis classified
consumers into two groups, those who were more interactive and those who were visual and
passive evaluators. These results are very important for understanding consumer interaction patterns,
which senses are involved (including their importance and hierarchy), and which sensory properties
of tiles are evaluated during the shopping experience. Moreover, this information is crucial for setting
design guidelines to improve sensory interactions and bridge sensory demands with product features. The Spanish Ministry of Culture and Education funded this research with Grant No. PSE-020400-2007-1.Artacho Ramírez, MÁ.; Alcantara Alcover, E.; Martínez, N. Design specifications to develop a pilota valenciana protection glove
[EN] This paper covers the first phase of a project aimed at developing a protective
glove for pilota valenciana. At present, players do not use specific equipment to protect their hands, and the lack of scientific knowledge for the development of
specific materials is notable. Within this context, we present a study based on
questionnaires administered to 100 pilota valenciana players (51 playing
professionally). The purpose is to establish the design specifications of a future
protective glove as well as to determine a standard protection. Some results
show that 64% of the players believe their protections to worsen performance
and 84% of them spend one hour or more to make them. The need to overcome
the disadvantages of the current protections has been proved, and design
Montaner, C.; Llana, S.; Gamez Paya, J.; Alcantara Alcover, E. (2012). Standardization process for paddle facilities
[EN] During the last years, the number of players
of paddle has increased enormously in Spain
and it has caused an increase in the number
of facilities for this sport. In this sense, the
Spanish Paddle Association (FEP) has decided
to count with IBV as technical partners to
start a standardization process of this kind of
facilities and the elements included on them.
The IBV will be the only laboratory accredited
by the FEP to approve this facilities according

Influence of age, gender and obesity on pressure discomfort threshold of the foot: A cross-sectional study
[EN] Background: Foot pain is a highly prevalent health problem for which measures such as a pattern of Pressure Discomfort Threshold of the foot plantar surface can provide valuable information for orthosis design. This study aimed to describe such pattern as a tool for the assessment of painful conditions of the feet and to analyse how it modifies according to age, gender and obesity.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed with participants allocated in: Group 1 people aged 20 to 35 years, Group 2 aged 50 to 65 years and Group 3 aged over 65. Pressure Discomfort Threshold on twelve points of the foot plantar surface was measured with an adapted manual dynamometer. Inferential analyses of the data were performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) considering foot areas, age group, gender and obesity.
Findings: 36 participants were analysed. The pattern of Pressure Discomfort Threshold for all individuals showed a significantly higher threshold on the heel and external foot (P < 0.001, eta(2) = 0.124) and was statistical significantly influenced by age (P < 0.001, eta(2) = 0.17), especially in participants aged over 65; by gender, with women having higher values (P < 0.001, eta(2) = 0.13), and by obesity (P < 0.001, eta(2) = 0.19).
Interpretation: A Pressure Discomfort Threshold pattern exists in the foot plantar surface. The characteristics of the discomfort pattern of the foot and its association with aging, gender and obesity may have considerable implications for orthosis and footwear design.Dueñas, L.; Arnal-Gómez, A.; Aparicio, I.; Balasch-Bernat, M.; López-Bueno, L.; Gonzalez Garcia, JC.; Solves Camallonga, C.... Tatami laboratory for the world karate federation
[EN] The sports flooring is a key element in sports practice, both from the point of view of safety and performance. In sports such as karate, this importance is heightened given the speed of movement that this sport demands and falls suffered by sportsmen during the course of it. In this sense, the World Karate Federation has carried out a study with the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia to work on a tatamiapproval process to ensure appropriate behavior and homogeneous thereof.[ES] El pavimento deportivo es un elemento clave en la práctica deportiva, tanto desde el punto de vista de la seguridad como del rendimiento. Safety tennis courts ensuring performance of players
[EN] Shoe surface interaction is a key factor in
tennis due to this is a very quick play. A
poor friction normally will mean slips and
lost points, and an excessive friction will
probably cause injuries due to high loads in
joints like knee and ankle. In this sense, the
objective of the project coordinated by ITF and
developed in collaboration with IBV, Sheffield
University and INCOTEC, is to develop a device
to evaluate shoe-surface interaction in tennis
courts and to identify the optimum friction of
