Evaluation of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Findings in Clinically Isolated Syndrome and Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Patients

    Get PDF
Objective: To compare diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) findings of the normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and corpus callosum (CC) in patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and a healthy control (HC) group. Materials and Methods: The CIS (n = 10), RRMS (n = 29), and HC (n = 13) groups were evaluated by DTI in this retrospective study. Mean diffusion (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) maps as well as MD and FA measurements were made from the corpus callosum genu (CCG), corpus callosum splenium (CCS), and NAWM areas from the frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobes. Results: The mean FA values of the NAWM in the temporal lobes were bilaterally lower in both the CIS and RRMS groups than in the HC group. However, no difference was found between the CIS and RRMS groups. In addition, the CIS group had lower FA values in the CCG, whereas the RRMS group had lower FA values in the CCS compared with the HC group. The MD values were significantly different in the CCG between the RRMS and HC groups. Conclusion: DTI contributes to detecting early changes in the NAWM and CC in patients diagnosed with CIS and RRMS. Additionally, DTI can aid in the follow-up care and management of these patients

Objective: Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a very common problem, particularly in women, and has an effect on their daily lifestyle and sexual activity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of overactive bladder syndrome on sexual life in asymptomatic continent women who are considered to be sexually active. Design: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. Setting: Gynaecology and obstetrics outpatient clinic, Pamukkale University Medical Faculty, Turkey. Subject: A total of 1,504 patients as research population were examined and 117 patients without gynaecological symptoms presenting to the Obstetric and Gynaecology Clinic were included in the study. Main outcome measures For data collection a questionnaire to gather socio-demographic and medical information, an assessment tool (OAB-at) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) for evaluating sexual dysfunction were utilised. Results: Patients were determined as 28 continent women with OAB, 89 women without OAB. In line with this information we found the mean score of OAB positive continent women was 13.00±5.06 and the mean score of OAB negative women was 3.57±2.15. Patients with OAB had negatively impacted sexual function in the areas of arousal, lubrication, orgasm and pain. Conclusion: OAB syndrome adversely affects sexual life even in continent women

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between menopausal symptoms and quality of life in women in the pre and postmenopausal periods. Methods and instruments: All 171 women in the climacteric period who registered at the Pamukkale University Education and Research Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic between January and July 2001 were included in the study. A questionnaire asking for sociodemographic information, complaints related to the climacteric period, and HRT use, as well as the WHOQOL brief, were used in order to obtain data. Findings: One hundred of the women who participated in the study were premenopausal and 71 were postmenopausal and the mean age was 47.39 (SD=6.65). No significant difference was found in pre and postmenopausal women in the comparison of their quality of physical life, psychological, social relationships and environment scores (p>0.05). The physical quality of life scores for those without vasomotor complaints in the pre and postmenopausal periods were significantly higher in those with a high educational level and women who had been menopausal between 1-5 years and more than 10 years (p0.05). Result: We did not find any significant difference in the quality of life of pre and postmenopausal women. © Springer 2005

De novo left ventricular non-compaction accompanied by severe mitral valve failure in a young pregnant

De novo left ventricular non-compaction is a rare pathology in the peripartum period. To the best of our knowledge, pregnancy-induced cardiomyopathy accompanied by severe mitral valve insufficiency requiring surgery during pregnancy has not been previously reported. Herein, we report the first postpartum case of de novo left ventricular non-compaction who underwent mitral valve repair

A Pilot Study to Establish DRLs in Interventional Radiology Procedures

Purpose: ICRP recommends the use of diagnostic reference levels(DRLs) as an important tool for the management and optimizationof radiation dose to patients who undergo radiologic examinations. In Turkey, there is no recent study or report considering DRLsfor interventional procedures. This study aims to present thepreliminary results for DRLs based on common interventionalprocedures carried out at the Department of Radiology, Dokuz EylülUniversity Hospital located in İzmir, Turkey.Materials and Method: Retrospective data collection have beenbased on four most frequent therapeutic or diagnostic interventionalprocedures which are carried out between August 2018 - June 2020and identified as cerebral angiography (CA), cerebral embolization(CE), biliary drainage (BD) and hepatic chemoembolization (HC). Allof the procedures were performed with Phillips Allura Xper 20/10biplane x-ray imaging system. Instructions of ICRP were followed forthe collection and statistical analysis of the data. Datasets involveddose area product (DAP), cumulative air Kerma at the reference point(Ka,r) and fluoroscopy time (FT). Median values of each dataset wererecorded as typical DRLs representing the institutional practice. Results: 169 patients have been included in this study. 54.4% of thepatients were male and 45.6% were female, with a mean age of 56.1(±15.8). Median DAP values were found to be 205, 75, 26 and 224Gy.cm2 for CE, CA, BD and HC, respectively. Median Ka,r values werefound to be 2023, 550, 144 and 719 mGy for CE, CA, BD and HC,respectively. Median FT values were found to be 18.55, 4.25, 4.0 and5.33 min for CE, CA, BD and HC, respectively. Conclusions: Findings of our study agree well with the findingsreported by various international studies. This indicates that theinterventional procedures in Dokuz Eylül University Departmentof Radiology are carried out under consideration of radiationprotection measures. This pilot study is part of an institutionalproject which is supported by Dokuz Eylül University and aims toreach a more extensive database to cover local and national DRLs inthe near future.</p
