    Body weight, weight perceptions and food intake patterns. A cross-sectional study among male recruits in the Norwegian National Guard

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Young men tend to have a low intake of vegetables and fruit. Unfortunately, this group is difficult to reach with health information. Furthermore, knowledge about weight perceptions and the relationship to food behaviour among young men is scant. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between BMI, health and weight perceptions and food intake patterns among young men in the military.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were collected with a 4-day food diary among 578 male recruits (age 18-26, mean 19.7) in the Norwegian National Guard (response rate 78%), in addition to a questionnaire, including questions about health and weight perceptions, and food frequency when still living at home. Weight and height were objectively measured. Food patterns were explored with principal component analysis, based on the diary data. A multivariate linear regression analysis determined the association between BMI and food patterns, and attitudes to health and slenderness, adjusting for smoking, physical activity and phase of data collection.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Twenty eight percent of the recruits were overweight/obese (BMI > 25 kg/m<sup>2</sup>). Two-thirds meant that it is important for them to be slender, and these recruits reported more of both light (p = 0.025) and hard (p = 0.016) physical activity than the others. It was a positive association between the recruits' food frequency at home, and the amount of intake in the military camp for several food items. A principal component analysis identified three distinct food patterns, loading on 1) plant foods, 2) fast food/soft drinks, 3) milk/cereals. Those who stated that it is important for them to be slender, or to have good health, did not have significantly different food intake patterns than the others. BMI was inversely related to scores on the plant food pattern, and positive attitudes to slenderness.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The majority of the recruits find it important to be slender. This orientation had a bearing on their physical activity pattern, but less on the food intake pattern. The data also indicate that subjects with high intakes of plant foods were less likely to have a high BMI than others. It is important to raise awareness of healthy eating in young men.</p

    Plausible self-reported dietary intakes in a residential facility are not necessarily reliable

    Background/Objectives: Comparing reported energy intakes with estimated energy requirements as multiples of basal metabolic rate (Ein:BMR) is an established method of identifying implausible food intake records. The present study aimed to examine the validity of self-reported food intakes believed to be plausible. Subjects/Methods: One hundred and eighty men and women were provided with all food and beverages for two consecutive days in a residential laboratory setting. Subjects self-reported their food and beverage intakes using the weighed food diary method (WDR). Investigators covertly measured subjects’ actual consumption over the same period. Subjects also reported intakes over four consecutive days at home. BMR was measured by indirect calorimetry. Results: Average reported energy intakes were significantly lower than actual intakes (11.2 and 11.8 MJ/d, respectively, P<0.001). Two-thirds (121) of the WDR were under-reported to varying degrees. Only five of these were considered as implausible using an Ein:BMR cut-off value of 1.03*BMR. Under-reporting of food and beverage intakes, as measured by the difference between reported and actual intake, was evident at all levels of Ein;BMR. Reported energy intakes were lower still (10.2 MJ/d) while subjects were at home. Conclusions: Under-recording of self-reported food intake records was extensive but very few under-reported food intake records were identified as implausible using energy intake to BMR ratios.     Habitual meal frequency and energy intake regulation in partially temporally isolated men

[email protected] OBJECTIVE: Assessment of a possible relationship between habitual as well as manipulated meal frequency, blood glucose pattern, macronutrient- and energy intake (EI), and energy intake regulation in partially temporally isolated men. DESIGN: A partially temporally isolated within-subject design assessing energy intake regulation in spite of intervention. Intervention consisted of manipulating meal frequency by offering iso-energetic (1 MJ) preloads high in fat or carbohydrate (CHO), with the same energy density. We have previously shown that after a high-CHO preload, inter-meal-interval was 1 h, while after a high-fat preload intermeal-interval was 2 h. SUBJECTS: Twenty healthy young (18-31 y) normal weight (body mass index (BMI): 22.8+/-1.9 kg/m(2)) men. MEASUREMENTS: On two separate days, each after a different preload: subsequent subjects' responses to the preload, eg manipulated meal frequency; continuous blood glucose levels and blood glucose patterns: macronutrient composition of food intake; EI; appetite ratings; and taste perception. From controlled 3-day food intake diaries: habitual meal frequency; EI; and macronutrient-intake. RESULTS: Accuracy of energy intake regulation is expressed as minimizing the difference in energy intake, despite intervention. The difference in 24 h EI on the two test days after the preloads (r(2)=0.56; P<0.001) was a function of habitual meal frequency. Variation in energy intake was primarily explained by habitual meal frequency (r(2)=0.76; P<0.0001). Adding macronutrient composition and number of blood glucose declines to this increased the explained variation to 86 and 96%, respectively. Percentage energy from CHO or from fat explained the variation in habitual meal frequency (r(2)=0.84; P<0.0001). Adding the total number of blood-glucose declines to this increased the explained variation to 88%, and adding average baseline blood glucose levels, sweetness perception and hunger suppression during preload consumption increased the explained variation to 91%. Manipulated meal frequency was related to habitual meal frequency (r(2)=0.86; P<0.0001) and was a function of the number of transient and dynamic blood glucose declines (r(2)=0.74; P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Habitual meal frequency is of greater significance in energy intake regulation in healthy young men than manipulated meal frequency. Healthy young men with a high habitual meal frequency showed lower 24 h EI, and a smaller difference in EI after macronutrient specific preloads, compared to those with a low habitual meal frequency, thus showing a more accurate energy intake regulation. Habitual meal frequency is based upon a cluster of related factors including macronutrient composition of the food, sweetness perception, hunger suppression, blood glucose declines and average baseline blood glucose levels. SUBJECTS: Twenty eight mainly overweight male volunteers (age, 19-56 y; body mass index, 29+/-2 kg x m(-2); BW, 89.4+/-9.2 kg). DESIGN: Baseline of one week with self-selected diet. Three treatments of 2 weeks with a low-energy diet divided over three times a day, consisting of a semisolid meal with (SSM+) or without GG (SSM) or a solid meal (SM) with the same energy content (947 kJ) and macronutrient composition, and a dinner of the subject's own choice. Washout periods lasted 4 weeks. RESULTS: Compared to baseline values, reduction in energy intake and BW loss were similar for SSM+, SSM and SM. Appetite (hunger, desire to eat or estimation of how much one could eat) was increased in SSM and in SM compared to baseline, but not in SSM+. Satiety and fullness in SSM+, SSM and SM were similar to baseline. Any intervention was more effective on BW loss when it took place the first time compared to the second and third times (2.6+/-0.2 kg, 1.7+/-0.2 kg and 1.1+/-0.2 kg, respectively; P<0.001). The SM-SSM+-SSM sequence was more effective on BW loss compared to the SSM+-SSM-SM sequence (5.6+/-1.0 and 2.5+/-0.6 kg, respectively; P<0.05). CONCLUSION: All the three treatments were equally effective with respect to BW loss. GG addition to a semisolid meal prevented an increase in appetite, hunger and desire to eat, which increase was present in the other treatments. However, differences between treatments were not statistically significant. The order effect shows that repeated 2-week bouts of dieting become increasingly ineffective. The sequence SM-SSM+-SSM was more effective than the sequence SSM+-SSM-SM, probably because compliance was relatively higher with the SSM+ or SSM diet, and compliance decreased towards the end of the complete experiment

[email protected] OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between the mean physical activity level (PAL) and the time spent on activities of three different intensity levels in an elderly population. Data was compared with previously obtained data from a group of younger adults. SUBJECTS: Fourteen elderly women and 14 elderly men (61+/-4 y; 27+/-5 kg/m(2); 33+/-7% body fat), and 14 young women and 16 young men (27+/-5 y, 24+/-2 kg/m(2)). MEASUREMENTS: PAL was determined as average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) combined with a measurement of basal metabolic rate (BMR): PAL=ADMR/BMR. ADMR was measured with the doubly labeled water method. BMR was measured with a ventilated hood system. Time spent on activity and activity intensity was measured by using a tri-axial accelerometer (7x2x0.8 cm, 30 g) over a 2 week interval. RESULTS: Mean PAL was 1.65+/-0.14. PAL was inversely related to the percentage of time spent on low-intensity activity (lying, sitting and standing), r= -0.43; P<0.05. Older subjects spent significantly more time at these activities than 20 to 35-y-old subjects (82+/-7% vs 65+/-7%; P<0.0001). A significant relation was not observed between PAL and the percentage of time spent on moderate (walking) or high (household activities, exercise and sports) intensity activity, or activity monitoring time (14.4+/-1.2 h/day). CONCLUSION: In the elderly, spending relatively more time on low-intensity activities affects the mean PAL negatively.
