    A nonsense mutation in the beta-carotene oxygenase 2 (BCO2) gene is tightly associated with accumulation of carotenoids in adipose tissue in sheep (Ovis aries)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sheep carcasses with yellow fat are sporadically observed at Norwegian slaughter houses. This phenomenon is known to be inherited as a recessive trait, and is caused by accumulation of carotenoids in adipose tissue. Two enzymes are known to be important in carotenoid degradation in mammals, and are therefore potential candidate genes for this trait. These are <it>beta-carotene 15,15'-monooxygenase 1 (BCMO1) </it>and the <it>beta-carotene oxygenase 2 (BCO2)</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the present study the coding region of the <it>BCMO1 </it>and the <it>BCO2 </it>gene were sequenced in yellow fat individuals and compared to the corresponding sequences from control animals with white fat. In the yellow fat individuals a nonsense mutation was found in <it>BCO2 </it>nucleotide position 196 (<it>c.196C>T</it>), introducing a stop codon in amino acid position 66. The full length protein consists of 575 amino acids. In spite of a very low frequency of this mutation in the Norwegian AI-ram population, 16 out of 18 yellow fat lambs were found to be homozygous for this mutation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In the present study a nonsense mutation (<it>c.196C>T</it>) in the <it>beta-carotene oxygenase 2 (BCO2) </it>gene is found to strongly associate with the yellow fat phenotype in sheep. The existence of individuals lacking this mutation, but still demonstrating yellow fat, suggests that additional mutations may cause a similar phenotype in this population. The results demonstrate a quantitatively important role for BCO2 in carotenoid degradation, which might indicate a broad enzyme specificity for carotenoids. Animals homozygous for the mutation are not reported to suffer from any negative health or development traits, pointing towards a minor role of BCO2 in vitamin A formation. Genotyping AI rams for <it>c.196C>T </it>can now be actively used in selection against the yellow fat trait.</p

    Satisfaction with Creativity: A Study of Organizational Characteristics and Individual Motivation

    In answering the question of what influences satisfaction with creativity in the workplace, this work takes into account the extent to which the organization supports human aspiration to act creatively. The work throughout reflects a pragmatist approach to creativity and fulfillment, bridging it with needs theory in psychology. The empirical model uses survey data encompassing over 4,000 workers in Italian social enterprises. Results show that satisfaction with creativity is supported, at organizational level, by teamwork, autonomy, domain-relevant competences, as well as by inclusive, fair processes and relationships. At the individual level, satisfaction with creativity is enhanced by the strength of intrinsic initial motivations. The analysis of interaction terms shows that teamwork and workers' initial motivations are complementary in enhancing satisfaction with creativity, while a high degree of domain-relevant competences appears to substitute advice and supervision by superiors in accomplishing the desired level of creative action

    Gender Equality and Corporate Social Responsibility in the Middle East

    This chapter focuses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in relation to gender equality in the Arab Middle East. It examines the relationship between CSR and gender in the workplace whilst exploring the link between CSR and human resource management (HRM) policies and practices. The chapter first presents some seminal work on gender equality and diversity management, looking at the business case for gender equality within the CSR and HRM contexts, before engaging with relevant work on gender equality in the Arab Middle East. It concludes by offering recommendations on advancing the equality agenda at the macro- and meso-levels, within a framework which recognises the centrality of agency of women, as well as the potential of positive changes through corporations being seen as ‘agents of change’. The chapter advocates for organisational and governmental policies to promote gender equality in the Arab Middle East

    Polaritonic molecular clock for all-optical ultrafast imaging of wavepacket dynamics without probe pulses

    Conventional approaches to probing ultrafast molecular dynamics rely on the use of synchronized laser pulses with a well-defined time delay. Typically, a pump pulse excites a molecular wavepacket. A subsequent probe pulse can then dissociate or ionize the molecule, and measurement of the molecular fragments provides information about where the wavepacket was for each time delay. Here, we propose to exploit the ultrafast nuclear-position-dependent emission obtained due to large light–matter coupling in plasmonic nanocavities to image wavepacket dynamics using only a single pump pulse. We show that the time-resolved emission from the cavity provides information about when the wavepacket passes a given region in nuclear configuration space. This approach can image both cavity-modified dynamics on polaritonic (hybrid light–matter) potentials in the strong light–matter coupling regime and bare-molecule dynamics in the intermediate coupling regime of large Purcell enhancements, and provides a route towards ultrafast molecular spectroscopy with plasmonic nanocavitiesThis work has been funded by the European Research Council grant ERC-2016-STG-714870 and the Spanish Ministry for Science, Innovation, and Universities—AEI grants RTI2018-099737-B-I00, PCI2018-093145 (through the QuantERA program of the European Commission), and CEX2018-000805-M (through the María de Maeztu program for Units of Excellence in R&D

Dordrecht, The Netherlands: Springer.Both learners and teachers find themselves in a learning landscape that is rapidly changing, along with fast societal and technological developments. This paper discusses the new learning landscape from an instructional design perspective. First, with regard to what is learned, people more than ever need flexible problem-solving and reasoning skills allowing them to deal with new, unfamiliar problem situations in their professional and everyday life. Second, with regard to the context in which learning takes place, learning in technology-rich, informal and professional 24/7 settings is becoming general practice. And third, with regard to the learners themselves, they can more often be characterized as lifelong learners who are mature, bring relevant prior knowledge, and have very heterogeneous expectations and perceptions of learning. High-quality instructional design research should focus on the question which instructional methods and media-method combinations are effective, efficient and appealing in this new learning landscape. Some innovative instructional methods that meet this requirement are discussed

    The aetiology of neonatal seizures and the diagnostic contribution of neonatal cerebral magnetic resonance imaging

    Aim: The aim of this study was to delineate aetiologies and explore the diagnostic value of cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in addition to cranial ultrasonography (cUS) in infants presenting with neonatal seizures. Method: This retrospective cohort study comprised infants (gestational age 35.0-42.6wks) with seizures, confirmed by either continuous amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) or standard EEG and admitted during a 14-year period to a level three neonatal intensive care unit (n=378; 216 males, 162 females; mean [SD] birthweight 3334g [594]). All infants underwent cUS and MRI (MRI on median of 5 days after birth, range 0-58d) within the first admission period. Results: An underlying aetiology was identified in 354 infants (93.7%). The most common aetiologies identified were hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (46%), intracranial haemorrhage (12.2%), and perinatal arterial ischaemic stroke (10.6%). When comparing MRI with cUS in these 354 infants MRI showed new findings which did not become apparent on cUS, contributing to a diagnosis in 42 (11.9%) infants and providing additional information to cUS, contributing to a diagnosis in 141 (39.8%). cUS alone would have allowed a diagnosis in only 37.9% of infants (134/354). Interpretation: Cerebral MRI contributed to making a diagnosis in the majority of infants. In 11.9% of infants the diagnosis would have been missed if only cUS were used and cerebral MRI added significantly to the information obtained in 39.8% of infants. These data suggest that cerebral MRI should be performed in all newborn infants presenting with EEG- or aEEG-confirmed seizures
