    The onset of dissipation in the kinematic dynamo

    The kinematic regime of the magnetic dynamo neglects the backreaction of the magnetic field on the flow. For small magnetic diffusivity, in the early stage of evolution, there is an ideal phase where dissipative effects can also be neglected. We estimate the magnitude of the energy dissipation term (Ohmic heating), taking into account differential constraints on chaotic flows. We find that the period of ideal evolution is roughly doubled over an estimate without constraints. The helicity generation terms are exponentially smaller than the energy dissipation, so that large quantities of energy are dissipated before any helicity can be created. Helicity flow is exponentially larger than net helicity generation. The constraints also lead to the existence of a singular initial condition for the magnetic field for which sizable amounts of helicity can potentially be created.Comment: 12 pages, ReVTeX 4.     State Transfer Between a Mechanical Oscillator and Microwave Fields in the Quantum Regime

    Recently, macroscopic mechanical oscillators have been coaxed into a regime of quantum behavior, by direct refrigeration [1] or a combination of refrigeration and laser-like cooling [2, 3]. This exciting result has encouraged notions that mechanical oscillators may perform useful functions in the processing of quantum information with superconducting circuits [1, 4-7], either by serving as a quantum memory for the ephemeral state of a microwave field or by providing a quantum interface between otherwise incompatible systems [8, 9]. As yet, the transfer of an itinerant state or propagating mode of a microwave field to and from a mechanical oscillator has not been demonstrated owing to the inability to agilely turn on and off the interaction between microwave electricity and mechanical motion. Here we demonstrate that the state of an itinerant microwave field can be coherently transferred into, stored in, and retrieved from a mechanical oscillator with amplitudes at the single quanta level. Crucially, the time to capture and to retrieve the microwave state is shorter than the quantum state lifetime of the mechanical oscillator.     A pilot study to evaluate the effect of Taeumjowi-tang on obesity in Korean adults: study protocol for a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Obesity, which is described as excessive or abnormal body fat, increases the risk of diet-related diseases. In Korea and around the world, the prevalence of obesity has grown annually from 1998 to 2008. This growth has continued despite various therapeutic efforts. The discovery of new and alternative treatments for obesity should be considered an important priority. Taeumjowi-tang (TJ001), a traditional Korean medicinal extract consisting of eight herbs, is a widely used herbal remedy for obesity in Korea. However, the efficacy and safety of TJ001 have not been fully investigated in a clinical trial. The purpose of this pilot study is to estimate obesity-related parameters and to assess the efficacy and safety of TJ001.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Our study is a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre clinical trial of Taeumjowi-tang (TJ001). For this study, we will recruit obese Korean patients of both sexes, ages 18 to 65 years, from four university hospitals. A total of 104 subjects will be recruited. The participants will receive either 7 g of TJ001 or a placebo three times daily for 12 weeks. The primary end point will be the rate of subjects who lose at least 5% of their baseline body weight. The secondary end points will be changes in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist/hip circumference ratio, lipid profiles, body fat composition, blood pressure, fasting glucose concentration, C-reactive protein and questionnaires related to the quality of life. The outcomes will be measured every 4 weeks. The study period will be 12 weeks and will include a total of five visits with each subject (at screening and at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results of our study will inform various estimates of TJ001 and will serve as the basis for a larger-scale trial.     ISSN exercise & sport nutrition review: research & recommendations

    Sports nutrition is a constantly evolving field with hundreds of research papers published annually. For this reason, keeping up to date with the literature is often difficult. This paper is a five year update of the sports nutrition review article published as the lead paper to launch the JISSN in 2004 and presents a well-referenced overview of the current state of the science related to how to optimize training and athletic performance through nutrition. More specifically, this paper provides an overview of: 1.) The definitional category of ergogenic aids and dietary supplements; 2.) How dietary supplements are legally regulated; 3.) How to evaluate the scientific merit of nutritional supplements; 4.) General nutritional strategies to optimize performance and enhance recovery; and, 5.) An overview of our current understanding of the ergogenic value of nutrition and dietary supplementation in regards to weight gain, weight loss, and performance enhancement. Our hope is that ISSN members and individuals interested in sports nutrition find this review useful in their daily practice and consultation with their clients

    Three-dimensional equilibria and transport in RFX-mod: A description using stellarator tools

    RFX-mod self-organized single helical axis (SHAx) states provide a unique opportunity to advance 3D fusion physics and establish a common knowledge basis in a parameter region not covered by stellarators and tokamaks. The VMEC code has been adapted to the reversed-field pinch (RFP) to model SHAx equilibria in fixed boundary mode with experimental measurements as constraint. The averaged particle diffusivity over the helical volume, estimated with the Monte Carlo code ORBIT, has a neoclassical-like dependence on collisionality and does not show the 1/ trend of un-optimized stellarators. In particular, the helical region boundary, corresponding to an electron transport barrier with zero magnetic shear and improved confinement, has been investigated using numerical codes common to the stellarator community. In fact, the DKES/PENTA codes have been applied to RFP for local neoclassical transport computations, including radial electric field, to estimate thermal diffusion coefficients in the barrier region for typical RFX-mod temperature and density profiles. A comparison with power balance estimates shows that residual chaos due to secondary tearing modes and small-scale turbulence still contribute to drive anomalous transport in the barrier region. © 2011 American Institute of Physics

    SKELETAL MUSCLE SUBSARCOLEMMAL MITOCHONDRIAL DYSFUNCTION IN HIGH-FAT FED RATS EXHIBITING IMPAIRED GLUCOSE HOMEOSTASIS.

    Objective: To investigate whether changes in body energy balance induced by long-term high-fat feeding in adult rats could be associated with modifications in energetic behaviour and oxidative stress of skeletal muscle subsarcolemmal (SS) and intermyofibrillar (IMF) mitochondrial populations.Design: Adult rats were fed low-fat or high-fat diet for 7 weeks.Measurements: Body energy balance and composition analysis together with plasma insulin and glucose level determination in the whole animal. Oxidative capacity, basal and induced proton leaks as well as aconitase and superoxide dismutase activities in SS and IMF mitochondria from skeletal muscle.Results: High-fat fed rats exhibit increased body lipid content, as well as hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycaemia and higher plasma non-esterified fatty acids. In addition, SS mitochondria display lower respiratory capacity and a different behaviour of SS and IMF mitochondria is found in the prevention from oxidative damage.Conclusions: A deleterious consequence of decreased oxidative capacity in SS mitochondria from rats fed high-fat diet would be a reduced utilization of energy substrates, especially fatty acids, which may lead to intracellular triglyceride accumulation, lipotoxicity and insulin resistance development. Our results thus reveal a possible role for SS mitochondria in the impairment of glucose homeostasis induced by high-fat diet
