Combinatorial Hopf algebra of superclass functions of type
We provide a Hopf algebra structure on the space of superclass functions on
the unipotent upper triangular group of type D over a finite field based on a
supercharacter theory constructed by Andr\'e and Neto. Also, we make further
comments with respect to types B and C. Type A was explores by M. Aguiar et. al
(2010), thus this paper is a contribution to understand combinatorially the

Using the Sound Card as a Timer
Experiments in mechanics can often be timed by the sounds they produce. In
such cases, digital audio recordings provide a simple way of measuring time
intervals with an accuracy comparable to that of photogate timers. We
illustrate this with an experiment in the physics of sports: to measure the

Obtenção de etanol utilizando-se de mandiocaba (Manihot esculenta Crantz).
A mandioca (Manihot esculenta Crantz) pode representar uma boa opção para a produção de etanol em áreas onde o cultivo da cana-de-açúcar não é viável e em períodos de entressafra. Objetivouse avaliar o rendimento em etanol do caldo fermentado obtido de raízes de mandioca doce. Foram realizados 11 ensaios em um fermentador de 1 L, seguindo um planejamento fatorial do tipo composto central (DCC), com dois níveis originais, utilizando-se o software Statistica 7.0. As condições das fermentações investigadas foram pH inicial 4,5-6,0 e temperatura 28-35ºC. Em todos os ensaios foi utilizado como mosto o caldo da mandiocaba devidamente esterilizado. Foi verificado que ao final das fermentações que se pode obter um teor alcoólico de 2,2 °GL a partir da mandiocaba. Notou-se que a produção de etanol foi maior em fermentações com baixas temperaturas, não havendo uma influência significativa do pH
A Review on Geotrichum Lipases: Production, Purification, Immobilization and Applications
Lipases are enzymes produced from innumerous microorganisms, plants and animal cells. They catalyze reactions of different lipid sources. The Geotrichum fungi are good producers of lipases with high hydrolytic activity and specificity for unsaturated fatty acids. A great number of studies have reported the importance of lipase from this genus and described important fermentation parameters for the enzyme production, such as nutrients, temperature, pH, inoculum, time of fermentation and others. Furthermore, different strategies have been used to purify and immobilize lipases from Geotrichum and
innumerous applications are cited in different processes as polyunsaturated fatty acids enrichment, hydrolysis and esterification of fat and oils, synthesis of aromas, biodiesel, and many others. This review highlights fundamental aspects of the production, purification, characterization, immobilization, and the applications of lipases produced by the genus Geotrichum
Dust-filled axially symmetric universes with a cosmological constant
Following the recent recognition of a positive value for the vacuum energy
density and the realization that a simple Kantowski-Sachs model might fit the
classical tests of cosmology, we study the qualitative behavior of three
anisotropic and homogeneous models: Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi type-I and Bianchi
type-III universes, with dust and a cosmological constant, in order to find out
which are physically permitted. We find that these models undergo
isotropization up to the point that the observations will not be able to
distinguish between them and the standard model, except for the Kantowski-Sachs
model
with smaller than some critical value
. Even if one imposes that the Universe should be nearly
isotropic since the last scattering epoch (), meaning that the
Universe should have approximately the same Hubble parameter in all directions
(considering the COBE 4-Year data), there is still a large range for the matter
density parameter compatible with Kantowsky-Sachs and Bianchi type-III if
, for a very small . The
Bianchi type-I model becomes exactly isotropic owing to our restrictions and we
have in this case. Of course, all these models
approach locally an exponential expanding state provided the cosmological

Baixas reservas energéticas corporais estão associadas à susceptibilidade ao jejum da espécie Glossophaga soricina
Morcegos nectarívoros que ocorrem na região Neotropical consomem grandes quantidades de carboidratos, e usam a energia obtida da dieta diretamente, a partir da glicose na circulação sanguínea. Esta adaptação sugere que morcegos nectarívoros tenham evoluído no sentido de apresentar adaptações fisiológicas que permitam o baixo armazenamento de reservas energéticas corporais. Nós testamos a hipótese de que morcegos Glossophaga soricina poupam o gasto energético envolvido com a formação de reservas energéticas teciduais, mesmo que isso represente uma arriscada suscetibilidade da espécie frente ao jejum. As concentrações de glicose apresentaram uma diminuição de 40% após 18 h de jejum. As concentrações de lipídios do músculo peitoral e do tecido adiposo, bem como as de ácidos graxos da carcaça e glicogênio hepático também diminuíram após 18 h de jejum. A incapacidade de manter a normoglicemia observada após o jejum de curto-prazo confirma que morcegos nectarívoros desta espécie não investem na formação de reservas energéticas, e apresentam, consequentemente, uma severa susceptibilidade ao jejum. Este estudo suporta a hipótese de que adaptações evolucionárias da espécie envolvem diminuição da massa corporal, reduzindo o custo energético do voo e aumentado o tempo de forrageamento.Neotropical nectar-feeding bats consume large amounts of sugar and use most of their energy-rich diet directly from the bloodstream, suggesting an adaptation towards lower body energy reserves. Here we tested the hypothesis that bats Glossophaga soricina spare the energy costs of storing energy reserves, even if this would represent a risky susceptibility during fasting. Blood glucose concentrations in 18 h fasted bats showed a 40% decrease. Breast muscle and adipose tissue lipids, as well as carcass fatty acids and liver glycogen, were also decreased following fasting. The inability to keep normoglycemia following a short-term fasting (i.e. 28 h) confirm that nectar bats invest little on storing energy reserves and show a severe fasting susceptibility associated to this pattern. Our study also support the general hypothesis that evolutionary specializations towards nectar diets involve adaptations to allow a decreased body mass, which reduces the energy costs of flight while increases foraging time
