    Views of the first cohort of HKU notebook programme participants

    In 1998, the University of Hong Kong was the first tertiary institution in Asia to implement a campuswide notebook computer programme, where each incoming student is enabled to own a personal notebook computer. At the beginning of each year, incoming students are surveyed to collect baseline data about their self-reported computer skills and their attitudes about computer use in education. In mid-May 2001, at the end of their undergraduate education, the 1998 cohort was surveyed again to gauge the changes, if any, in the skills and attitudes of the students after three years of study at the university and to collect the opinions of the students for future directives concerning IT in education at the University. Generally, students who participated in the notebook programme were satisfied and found the ThinkPads to be useful in their coursework and studies, using them for about 14 hours a week for school work.published_or_final_versio

    Feasibility and potentials of online support for stress management among secondary school teachers

    Teachers' work-related stress is a widespread problem. Few studies have used online communications to provide support to teachers, and these were mainly focused on novice teachers. Here, we performed an exploratory study to examine whether the use of online forums by secondary school teachers in Hong Kong could provide social support to manage work-related stress. Following 7 days of forum use, content analysis and post-intervention evaluations were carried out to examine the anonymous communications of 75 secondary school teachers who participated in one of five online discussion forums. Consensus on the coding and categorization of the data was reached among three experienced researchers in qualitative analyses. The online forums were well received by the participants. Most participants reported that they received support from the forum and considered it useful for stress management. These results suggest that online support can be used for stress management among secondary school teachers. Further studies on using online approaches as stress management tools are warranted.     Autotaxin signaling facilitates β cell dedifferentiation and dysfunction induced by Sirtuin 3 deficiency

    OBJECTIVE: β cell dedifferentiation may underlie the reversible reduction in pancreatic β cell mass and function in type 2 diabetes (T2D). We previously reported that β cell-specific Sirt3 knockout (Sirt3f/f;Cre/+) mice developed impaired glucose tolerance and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion after feeding with high fat diet (HFD). RNA sequencing showed that Sirt3-deficient islets had enhanced expression of Enpp2 (Autotaxin, or ATX), a secreted lysophospholipase which produces lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). Here, we hypothesized that activation of the ATX/LPA pathway contributed to pancreatic β cell dedifferentiation in Sirt3-deficient β cells. METHODS: We applied LPA, or lysophosphatidylcoline (LPC), the substrate of ATX for producing LPA, to MIN6 cell line and mouse islets with altered Sirt3 expression to investigate the effect of LPA on β cell dedifferentiation and its underlying mechanisms. To examine the pathological effects of ATX/LPA pathway, we injected the β cell selective adeno-associated virus (AAV-Atx-shRNA) or negative control AAV-scramble in Sirt3f/f and Sirt3f/f;Cre/+ mice followed by 6-week of HFD feeding. RESULTS: In Sirt3f/f;Cre/+ mouse islets and Sirt3 knockdown MIN6 cells, ATX upregulation led to increased LPC with increased production of LPA. The latter not only induced reversible dedifferentiation in MIN6 cells and mouse islets, but also reduced glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from islets. In MIN6 cells, LPA induced phosphorylation of JNK/p38 MAPK which was accompanied by β cell dedifferentiation. The latter was suppressed by inhibitors of LPA receptor, JNK, and p38 MAPK. Importantly, inhibiting ATX in vivo improved insulin secretion and reduced β cell dedifferentiation in HFD-fed Sirt3f/f;Cre/+ mice. CONCLUSIONS: Sirt3 prevents β cell dedifferentiation by inhibiting ATX expression and upregulation of LPA. These findings support a long-range signaling effect of Sirt3 which modulates the ATX-LPA pathway to reverse β cell dysfunction associated with glucolipotoxicity

    Emergency management in health: key issues and challenges in the UK

    Background Emergency planning in the UK has grown considerably in recent years, galvanised by the threat of terrorism. However, deficiencies in NHS emergency planning were identified and the evidence-base that underpins it is questionable. Inconsistencies in terminologies and concepts also exist. Different models of emergency management exist internationally but the optimal system is unknown. This study examines the evidence-base and evidence requirements for emergency planning in the UK health context. Methods The study involved semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders and opinion leaders. Purposive sampling was used to obtain a breadth of views from various agencies involved in emergency planning and response. Interviews were then analysed using a grounded approach using standard framework analysis techniques. Results We conducted 17 key informant interviews. Interviewees identified greater gaps in operational than technical aspects of emergency planning. Social and behavioural knowledge gaps were highlighted with regards to how individuals and organisations deal with risk and behave in emergencies. Evidence-based approaches to public engagement and for developing community resilience to disasters are lacking. Other gaps included how knowledge was developed and used. Conflicting views with regards to the optimal configuration and operation of the emergency management system were voiced. Conclusions Four thematic categories for future research emerged: (i) Knowledge-base for emergency management: Further exploration is needed of how knowledge is acquired, valued, disseminated, adopted and retained. (ii) Social and behavioural issues: Greater understanding of how individuals approach risk and behave in emergencies is required. (iii) Organisational issues in emergencies: Several conflicting organisational issues were identified; value of planning versus plans, flexible versus standardized procedures, top-down versus bottom-up engagement, generic versus specific planning, and reactive versus proactive approaches to emergencies. (iv) Emergency management system: More study is required of system-wide issues relating to system configuration and operation, public engagement, and how emergency planning is assessed

    Neighborhood deprivation and biomarkers of health in Britain: The mediating role of the physical environment

    Background: Neighborhood deprivation has been consistently linked to poor individual health outcomes; however, studies exploring the mechanisms involved in this association are scarce. The objective of this study was to investigate whether objective measures of the physical environment mediate the association between neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation and biomarkers of health in Britain. Methods: We linked individual-level biomarker data from Understanding Society: The UK Household Longitudinal Survey (2010-2012) to neighborhood-level data from different governmental sources. Our outcome variables were forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1%; n=16,347), systolic blood pressure (SBP; n=16,846), body mass index (BMI; n=19,417), and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP; n=11,825). Our measure of neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation was the Carstairs index, and the neighborhood-level mediators were levels of air pollutants (sulphur dioxide [SO2], particulate matter [PM10], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], and carbon monoxide [CO]), green space, and proximity to waste and industrial facilities. We fitted a multilevel mediation model following a multilevel structural equation framework in MPlus v7.4, adjusting for age, gender, and income. Results: Residents of poor neighborhoods and those exposed to higher pollution and less green space had worse health outcomes. However, only SO2exposure significantly and partially mediated the association between neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation and SBP, BMI, and CRP. Conclusion: Reducing air pollution exposure and increasing access to green space may improve population health but may not decrease health inequalities in Britain

The definitive version was published in Ecotoxicology 16 (2007): 205-219, doi:10.1007/s10646-006-0122-0.Investigative efforts into the potential endocrine-disrupting effects of chemicals have mainly concentrated on vertebrates, with significantly less attention paid to understanding potential endocrine disruption in the invertebrates. Given that invertebrates account for at least 95% of all known animal species and are critical to ecosystem structure and function, it remains essential to close this gap in knowledge and research. The lack of progress regarding endocrine disruption in invertebrates is still largely due to: (1) our ignorance of mode-of-action, physiological control, and hormone structure and function in invertebrates; (2) lack of a standardized invertebrate assay; (3) the irrelevance to most invertebrates of the proposed activity-based biological indicators for endocrine disruptor exposure (androgen, estrogen and thyroid); (4) limited field studies. Past and ongoing research efforts using the standard invertebrate toxicity test model, the mysid shrimp, have aimed at addressing some of these issues. The present review serves as an update to a previous publication on the use of mysid shrimp for the evaluation of endocrine disruptors (Verslycke et al., 2004a). It summarizes recent investigative efforts that have significantly advanced our understanding of invertebrate-specific endocrine toxicity, population modeling, field studies, and transgeneration standard test development using the mysid model.Supported by a Fellowship of the Belgian American Educational Foundation
