Electrostatics in a simple wormhole revisited
The electrostatic potential generated by a point charge at rest in a simple
static, spherically symmetric wormhole is given in the form of series of
multipoles and in closed form. The general potential which is physically
acceptable depends on a parameter due to the fact that the monopole solution is
arbitrary. When the wormhole has Z2-symmetry, the potential is completely
determined. The calculation of the electrostatic self-energy and of the

Study of complexation capacity and its relationship with some environmental variables in five reservoirs of the Tiete river system
The copper and cadmium complexation properties in natural sediment suspensions of reservoirs of the Tiete River were studied using the solid membrane copper and cadmium ion-selective electrodes. The complexation and the average conditional stability constants were determined under equilibrium conditions at pH=6.00 +/- 0.05 in a medium of 1.0 mol L-1 sodium nitrate, using the Scatchard method. The copper and cadmium electrodes presented Nernstian behavior from 1 X 10(-6) to 1 x 10(-1) mol L-1 of total metal concentration. Scatchard graphs suggest two classes of binding sites for both metals. Observation of the thermal Casimir force
Quantum theory predicts the existence of the Casimir force between
macroscopic bodies, due to the zero-point energy of electromagnetic field modes
around them. This quantum fluctuation-induced force has been experimentally
observed for metallic and semiconducting bodies, although the measurements to
date have been unable to clearly settle the question of the correct
low-frequency form of the dielectric constant dispersion (the Drude model or
the plasma model) to be used for calculating the Casimir forces. At finite
temperature a thermal Casimir force, due to thermal, rather than quantum,
fluctuations of the electromagnetic field, has been theoretically predicted
long ago. Here we report the experimental observation of the thermal Casimir
force between two gold plates. We measured the attractive force between a flat
and a spherical plate for separations between 0.7 m and 7 m. An
electrostatic force caused by potential patches on the plates' surfaces is
included in the analysis. The experimental results are in excellent agreement
(reduced of 1.04) with the Casimir force calculated using the Drude
model, including the T=300 K thermal force, which dominates over the quantum
fluctuation-induced force at separations greater than 3 m. The plasma
model result is excluded in the measured separation range.Comment: 6 page
Co3O4 Nanocrystals on Graphene as a Synergistic Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction
Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of
key renewable energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting.
Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high
activity at low costs remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a hybrid
material of Co3O4 nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide (GO) as a
high-performance bi-functional catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and
oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While Co3O4 or graphene oxide alone has little
catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR
activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen-doping of graphene. The
Co3O4/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior
stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active
for OER, making it a high performance non-precious metal based bi-catalyst for
both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic
chemical coupling effects between Co3O4 and graphene.Comment: published in Nature Material
Promotion of oxygen reduction by a bio-inspired tethered iron phthalocyanine carbon nanotube-based catalyst
Electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction are a critical component that may dramatically enhance the performance of fuel cells and metal-air batteries, which may provide the power for future electric vehicles. Here we report a novel bio-inspired composite electrocatalyst, iron phthalocyanine with an axial ligand anchored on single-walled carbon nanotubes, demonstrating higher electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction than the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst as well as exceptional durability during cycling in alkaline media. Theoretical calculations suggest that the rehybridization of Fe 3d orbitals with the ligand orbitals coordinated from the axial direction results in a significant change in electronic and geometric structure, which greatly increases the rate of oxygen reduction reaction. Our results demonstrate a new strategy to rationally design inexpensive and durable electrochemical oxygen reduction catalysts for metal-air batteries and fuel cells.close34
Genotype by environment interaction in Nelore cattle from five Brazilian states
Records from 75,941 Nelore cattle were used to determine the importance of genotype by environment interaction (GEI) in five Brazilian states. (Co)variance components were estimated by single-trait analysis (with yearling weight, W450, considered to be the same trait in all states) and multiple-trait analysis (with the record from each state considered to be a different trait). The direct heritability estimates for yearling weight were 0.51, 0.39, 0.44, 0.37 and 0.41 in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais, respectively. The across-state genetic correlation estimates between Goiás and Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, and Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais ranged from 0.67 to 0.75. These estimates indicate that GEIs are biologically important. No interactions were observed between Goiás and São Paulo, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and São Paulo, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais, or São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul (0.82 to 0.97).
