Magnon polaron formed by selectively coupled coherent magnon and phonon modes of a surface patterned ferromagnet

Strong coupling between two quanta of different excitations leads to the formation of a hybridized state which paves a way for exploiting new degrees of freedom to control phenomena with high efficiency and precision. A magnon polaron is the hybridized state of a phonon and a magnon, the elementary quanta of lattice vibrations and spin waves in a magnetically-ordered material. A magnon polaron can be formed at the intersection of the magnon and phonon dispersions, where their frequencies coincide. The observation of magnon polarons in the time domain has remained extremely challenging because the weak interaction of magnons and phonons and their short lifetimes jeopardize the strong coupling required for the formation of a hybridized state. Here, we overcome these limitations by spatial matching of magnons and phonons in a metallic ferromagnet with a nanoscale periodic surface pattern. The spatial overlap of the selected phonon and magnon modes formed in the periodic ferromagnetic structure results in a high coupling strength which, in combination with their long lifetimes allows us to find clear evidence of an optically excited magnon polaron. We show that the symmetries of the localized magnon and phonon states play a crucial role in the magnon polaron formation and its manifestation in the optically excited magnetic transients

Ultrafast insulator-metal transition in VO2 nanostructures assisted by picosecond strain pulses

Strain engineering is a powerful technology that exploits the stationary external or internal stress of specific spatial distribution for controlling the fundamental properties of condensed materials and nanostructures. This advanced technique modulates in space the carrier density and mobility, the optical absorption, and in strongly correlated systems, the phase, e.g., insulator-metal or ferromagnetic-paramagnetic. However, while successfully accessing nanometer-length scales, strain engineering is yet to be brought down to ultrafast time scales allowing strain-assisted control of the state of matter at THz frequencies. We demonstrate control of an optically-driven insulator-to-metal phase transition by a picosecond strain pulse, which paves the way to ultrafast strain engineering in nanostructures with phase transitions. This is realized by simultaneous excitation of VO2 nanohillocks by a 170-fs laser and picosecond strain pulses finely timed with each other. By monitoring the transient optical reflectivity of the VO2, we show that strain pulses, depending on the sign of the strain at the moment of optical excitation, increase or decrease the fraction of VO2 that undergoes an ultrafast phase transition. A transient strain of moderate amplitude of approximately 0.1% applied during ultrafast photo-induced nonthermal transition changes the fraction of VO2 in the laser-induced phase by approximately 1%. In contrast, if applied after the photoexcitation when the phase transformations of the material are governed by thermal processes, a transient strain of the same amplitude produces no measurable effect on the phase state

Resonant driving of magnetization precession in a ferromagnetic layer by coherent monochromatic phonons

Get PDF
We realize resonant driving of the magnetization precession by monochromatic phonons in a thin ferromagnetic layer embedded into a phononic Fabry-Pérot resonator. A femtosecond laser pulse excites resonant phonon modes of the structure in the 10−40 GHz frequency range. By applying an external magnetic field, we tune the precession frequency relative to the frequency of the phonons localized in the cavity and observe an enormous increase in the amplitude of the magnetization precession when the frequencies of free magnetization precession and phonons localized in the cavity are equal

Optical excitation of single- and multi-mode magnetization precession in Fe-Ga nanolayers

Get PDF
We demonstrate a variety of precessional responses of the magnetization to ultrafast optical excitation in nanolayers of Galfenol (Fe,Ga), which is a ferromagnetic material with large saturation magnetization and enhanced magnetostriction. The particular properties of Galfenol, including cubic magnetic anisotropy and weak damping, allow us to detect up to 6 magnon modes in a 120nm layer, and a single mode with effective damping _eff = 0.005 and frequency up to 100 GHz in a 4- nm layer. This is the highest frequency observed to date in time-resolved experiments with metallic ferromagnets. We predict that detection of magnetisation precession approaching THz frequencies should be possible with Galfenol nanolayers

Communicative Competence in the Structure of "Soft Skills" as Part of the University Students Professional Training

No full text
Modern society transformation stimulates the search for new self-fulfillment conditions of a professional’s personality. Soft skills, acquired through targeted professional training, are one of the determinants of professional activity growth. Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature, in accordance with the Russian Managers Association terminology, the article lists specific communicative competencies of a "successful" manager. As a hypothesis of the study, an assumption was made about the presence of a predominantly low development level of communicative competencies that are included in the structure of students’ professionally significant "soft skills". The study (N=184) involved students aged 18–19 (M=18,28; SD=0,45), including 110 female and 74 male students of the 1st year bachelor Management program from Nizhny Novgorod universities. The following methods were used: the “Level of subjective control” by E.F. Bazhin, E.A. Golynkin, L.M. Etkind; "Emotional intelligence test" by D.V. Lucin; "Сommunicative social competence diagnosis" by N.P. Fetiskin, V.V. Kozlov, G.M. Manuilov. The diagnostic results showed the predominant presence of medium and high development levels of communicative competencies, related to communicative social competence, emotional intelligence and subjective control of future managers. The presence of a medium and high levels of the studied communicative competencies development allows using them as a basis for the successful “soft skills” development of a management specialist.</p

Abstract: This paper is devoted to investigation of nonlinear phenomena in microeconomics. The mathematical model of innovation firm activity is proposed. This model is based on the dynamical system. The bifurcation analyze and analyze of the critical points were investigated. The phenomenon of latent bankruptcy was found. Also the influence of such factors as taking credit, development of new good and increasing of transaction costs on topology of phase space was realized.Note: Research direction:Mathematical modelling in actual problems of science and technic
