    Azimuthal asymmetries in lepton-pair production at a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams (AFTER)

    A multi-purpose fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead-ion beams of the LHC was recently proposed by Brodsky, Fleuret, Hadjidakis and Lansberg, and here we concentrate our study on some issues related to the spin physics part of this project (referred to as AFTER). We study the nucleon spin structure through pppp and pdpd processes with a fixed-target experiment using the LHC proton beams, for the kinematical region with 7 TeV proton beams at the energy in center-of-mass frame of two nucleons s=115\sqrt{s}=115 GeV. We calculate and estimate the cos2ϕ\cos2\phi azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized pppp and pdpd dilepton production processes in the Drell--Yan continuum region and at the ZZ-pole. We also calculate the sin(2ϕϕS)\sin(2\phi-\phi_S), sin(2ϕ+ϕS)\sin(2\phi+\phi_S) and sin2ϕ\sin2\phi azimuthal asymmetries of pppp and pdpd dilepton production processes with the target proton and deuteron longitudinally or transversally polarized in the Drell--Yan continuum region and around ZZ resonances region. We conclude that it is feasible to measure these azimuthal asymmetries, consequently the three-dimensional or transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (3dPDFs or TMDs), at this new AFTER facility.Comment: 15 pages, 40 figures.     Non-perturbative momentum dependence of the coupling constant and hadronic models

    Models of hadron structure are associated with a hadronic scale which allows by perturbative evolution to calculate observables in the deep inelastic region. The resolution of Dyson-Schwinger equations leads to the freezing of the QCD running coupling (effective charge) in the infrared, which is best understood as a dynamical generation of a gluon mass function, giving rise to a momentum dependence which is free from infrared divergences. We use this new development to understand why perturbative treatments are working reasonably well despite the smallness of the hadronic scale.Comment: Changes in Acknowledgments and PACS number

    RI'/SMOM scheme amplitudes for quark currents at two loops

    We determine the two loop corrections to the Green's function of a quark current inserted in a quark 2-point function at the symmetric subtraction point. The amplitudes for the scalar, vector and tensor currents are presented in both the MSbar and RI'/SMOM renormalization schemes. The RI'/SMOM scheme two loop renormalization for the scalar and tensor cases agree with previous work. The vector current renormalization requires special treatment as it must be consistent with the Slavnov-Taylor identity which we demonstrate. We also discuss the possibility of an alternative definition of the RI'/SMOM scheme in the case of the tensor current.Comment: 36 latex pages, 1 figure, 21 tables, anc directory contains txt file with data in table

    Emergent global oscillations in heterogeneous excitable media: The example of pancreatic beta cells

    Using the standard van der Pol-FitzHugh-Nagumo excitable medium model I demonstrate a novel generic mechanism, diversity, that provokes the emergence of global oscillations from individually quiescent elements in heterogeneous excitable media. This mechanism may be operating in the mammalian pancreas, where excitable beta cells, quiescent when isolated, are found to oscillate when coupled despite the absence of a pacemaker region.Comment: See home page http://lec.ugr.es/~julya

    Free Energies and fluctuations for the unitary Brownian motion

    We show that the Laplace transforms of traces of words in independent unitary Brownian motions converge towards an analytic function on a non trivial disc. These results allow one to study the asymptotic behavior of Wilson loops under the unitary Yang--Mills measure on the plane with a potential. The limiting objects obtained are shown to be characterized by equations analogue to Schwinger--Dyson's ones, named here after Makeenko and Migdal

    Associations of depression and anxiety symptoms with sexual behaviour in women and heterosexual men attending sexual health clinics: a cross-sectional study.

    OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of symptoms of depression and anxiety with sexual risk behaviour and history, among women and heterosexual men attending genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics. METHODS: Attitudes to and Understanding of Risk of Acquisition of HIV (AURAH) was a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire study recruited from 20 GUM clinics in England, 2013-2014. This analysis included women and heterosexual men. The prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms was assessed. Modified Poisson regression was used to produce adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) for the association of t demographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors with depression and anxiety, adjusted for gender, age, ethnicity, education level and study region. Among individuals reporting sex in the past 3 months, associations of depression and anxiety with sexual risk behaviour and history were assessed separately by gender, adjusted for age, ethnicity, study region, education and relationship status. RESULTS: Questionnaires were completed by 676 women and 470 heterosexual men. Depression symptoms were reported by 100 (14.8%) women and 33 men (7.0%). Anxiety symptoms were reported by 79 women (11.7%) and 21 men (4.5%). Among women reporting recent sex, those with depression symptoms were more likely to report condomless sex with a non-regular partner, aPR 1.38 (1.07-1.77) and recent condomless sex with two or more partners, 1.80 (1.25-2.59). Women with anxiety symptoms more likely to report recent condomless sex with two or more partners, 1.68 (1.13-2.50), low self-efficacy for condom use, 1.54 (1.02-2.31) and STI diagnosis in the last year 1.51 (1.04-2.20). Among heterosexual men reporting recent sex, depression and anxiety symptoms were associated with low self-efficacy with condom use, 2.32 (1.29-4.19) for depression and 2.23 (1.26-3.94) for anxiety, but not with measures of condomless sex. DISCUSSION: The associations between psychological symptoms and sexual risk behaviours highlight the importance of holistic assessment of need by both general and sexual health clinicians.     The cos 2 phi asymmetry of Drell-Yan and J/psi production in unpolarized ppbar scattering

    We investigate the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in Drell--Yan and J/psi production from unpolarized ppbar scattering at GSI-HESR energies. The contribution to this asymmetry arising from the leading-twist Boer-Mulders function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks in an unpolarized hadron, is explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the GSI-HESR kinematic regime are presented. We show that the cos 2 phi asymmetry is quite sizable both on the J/psi peak and in the Drell-Yan continuum region. Therefore these processes may offer an experimentally viable access to the Boer-Mulders function in the early unpolarized stage of GSI experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Eur.     Final state interaction and BKKB\to KK decays in perturbative QCD

    We predict branching ratios and CP asymmetries of the BKKB\to KK decays using perturbative QCD factorization theorem, in which tree, penguin, and annihilation contributions, including both factorizable and nonfactorizable ones, are expressed as convolutions of hard six-quark amplitudes with universal meson wave functions. The unitarity angle ϕ3=90o\phi_3= 90^o and the BB and KK meson wave functions extracted from experimental data of the BKπB\to K\pi and ππ\pi\pi decays are employed. Since the BKKB\to KK decays are sensitive to final-state-interaction effects, the comparision of our predictions with future data can test the neglect of these effects in the above formalism. The CP asymmetry in the B±K±K0B^\pm\to K^\pm K^0 modes and the Bd0K±KB_d^0\to K^\pm K^\mp branching ratios depend on annihilation and nonfactorizable amplitudes. The BKKB\to KK data can also verify the evaluation of these contributions.Comment: 13 pages in latex file, 7 figures in ps file

    Nonfactorizable contributions to BD()MB \to D^{(*)} M decays

    While the factorization assumption works well for many two-body nonleptonic BB meson decay modes, the recent measurement of BˉD()0M0\bar B\to D^{(*)0}M^0 with M=πM=\pi, ρ\rho and ω\omega shows large deviation from this assumption. We analyze the BD()MB\to D^{(*)}M decays in the perturbative QCD approach based on kTk_T factorization theorem, in which both factorizable and nonfactorizable contributions can be calculated in the same framework. Our predictions for the Bauer-Stech-Wirbel parameters, a2/a1=0.43±0.04|a_2/a_1|= 0.43\pm 0.04 and Arg(a2/a1)42Arg(a_2/a_1)\sim -42^\circ and a2/a1=0.47±0.05|a_2/a_1|= 0.47\pm 0.05 and Arg(a2/a1)41Arg(a_2/a_1)\sim -41^\circ, are consistent with the observed BDπB\to D\pi and BDπB\to D^*\pi branching ratios, respectively. It is found that the large magnitude a2|a_2| and the large relative phase between a2a_2 and a1a_1 come from color-suppressed nonfactorizable amplitudes. Our predictions for the Bˉ0D()0ρ0{\bar B}^0\to D^{(*)0}\rho^0, D()0ωD^{(*)0}\omega branching ratios can be confronted with future experimental data.Comment: 25 pages with Latex, axodraw.sty, 6 figures and 5 tables, Version published in PRD, Added new section 5 and reference
