    A numerical and analytical study of two holes doped into the 2D t--J model

    Exact diagonalization numerical results are presented for a 32-site square cluster, with two holes propagating in an antiferromagnetic background described by the t-J model. We characterize the wave function of the lowest energy bound state found in this calculation, which has d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry. Analytical work is presented, based on a Lang-Firsov-type canonical transformation derived quasiparticle Hamiltonian, that accurately agrees with numerically determined values for the electron momentum distribution function and the pair correlation function.     A time-dependent variational Lagrangian analysis based on the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional serves to study the dynamics of a metastable giant vortex in a rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. The resulting oscillation frequencies of the core radius reproduce the trends seen in recent experiments [Engels et al., Phys. Rev.     We consider a cylindrically symmetric trap containing a small Bose-Einstein condensate with a singly quantized vortex on the axis of symmetry. A time-dependent variational Lagrangian analysis yields the small-amplitude dynamics of the vortex and the condensate, directly determining the equations of motion of the coupled normal modes. As found previously from the Bogoliubov equations, there are two rigid dipole modes and one anomalous mode with a negative frequency when seen in the laboratory frame.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, Revte

    Influence of Off-Sun-Earth Line Distance on the Accuracy of L1 Solar Wind Monitoring

    Upstream solar wind measurements from near the L1 Lagrangian point are commonly used to investigate solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. The off-Sun-Earth line distance of such solar wind monitors can be large, up to 100 RE. We investigate how the correlation between measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field and associated ionospheric responses deteriorates as the off-Sun-Earth line distance increases. Specifically, we use the magnitude and polarity of the dayside region 0 field-aligned currents (R0 FACs) as a measure of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) BY-associated magnetic tension effects on newly-reconnected field lines, related to the Svalgaard-Mansurov effect. The R0 FACs are derived from Advanced Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment measurements by a principal component analysis, for the years 2010–2016. We perform cross-correlation analyses between time-series of IMF BY, measured by the Wind spacecraft and propagated to the nose of the bow shock by the OMNI technique, and these R0 FAC measurements. Typically, in the summer hemisphere, cross-correlation coefficients between 0.6 and 0.9 are found. However, there is a reduction of order 0.1–0.15 in correlation coefficient between periods when Wind is close to (within 45 RE) and distant from (beyond 70 RE) the Sun-Earth line. We find a time-lag of around 17 min between predictions of the arrival of IMF features at the bow shock and their effect in the ionosphere, irrespective of the location of Wind.publishedVersio

    Remote identification of sheep with flystrike using behavioural observations

    Flystrike is a major problem affecting sheep in Australia. Identification of ‘flystruck’ individuals is crucial for treatment; but requires labour-intensive physical examination. As the industry moves toward more low-input systems; there is a need for remote methods to identify flystruck individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviour of sheep with breech flystrike within a paddock setting. Video footage of sixteen Merino sheep; eight later confirmed with flystrike and eight without; was collected as they moved freely within the paddock with conspecifics. Quantitative behavioural measurements and a qualitative behavioural assessment (QBA) were conducted and compared to their breech conditions (i.e., faecal/urine staining; flystrike severity). Both qualitative and quantitative assessments indicated behavioural differences between flystruck and non-flystruck animals. Flystruck sheep had a behavioural profile characterised by restless behaviour; abnormal postures and reduced grazing time (<i>p</i> < 0.05). Furthermore; flystruck sheep were scored to have a more ‘exhausted/irritated’ demeanour using QBA (<i>p</i> < 0.05). The behavioural responses also corresponded to the flystrike severity scores and condition of the breech area. We conclude that remotely assessed behaviour of flystruck sheep diverges markedly from non-flystruck sheep; and thus could be a low-input method for identifying and treating affected animals

    Conserving and Gapless Approximations for an Inhomogeneous Bose Gas at Finite Temperatures

    We derive and discuss the equations of motion for the condensate and its fluctuations for a dilute, weakly interacting Bose gas in an external potential within the self--consistent Hartree--Fock--Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. Account is taken of the depletion of the condensate and the anomalous Bose correlations, which are important at finite temperatures. We give a critical analysis of the self-consistent HFB approximation in terms of the Hohenberg--Martin classification of approximations (conserving vs gapless) and point out that the Popov approximation to the full HFB gives a gapless single-particle spectrum at all temperatures. The Beliaev second-order approximation is discussed as the spectrum generated by functional differentiation of the HFB single--particle Green's function. We emphasize that the problem of determining the excitation spectrum of a Bose-condensed gas (homogeneous or inhomogeneous) is difficult because of the need to satisfy several different constraints.Comment: plain tex, 19 page

    Collective Modes in a Slab of Interacting Nuclear Matter: The effects of finite range interactions

    We consider a slab of nuclear matter and investigate the collective excitations, which develop in the response function of the system. We introduce a finite-range realistic interaction among the nucleons, which reproduces the full G-matrix by a linear combination of gaussian potentials in the various spin-isospin channels. We then analyze the collective modes of the slab in the S=T=1 channel: for moderate momenta hard and soft zero-sound modes are found, which exhaust most of the excitation strength.
