    Conceptual Unification of Gravity and Quanta

    We present a model unifying general relativity and quantum mechanics. The model is based on the (noncommutative) algebra \mbox{{\cal A}} on the groupoid \Gamma = E \times G where E is the total space of the frame bundle over spacetime, and G the Lorentz group. The differential geometry, based on derivations of \mbox{{\cal A}}, is constructed. The eigenvalue equation for the Einstein operator plays the role of the generalized Einstein's equation. The algebra \mbox{{\cal A}}, when suitably represented in a bundle of Hilbert spaces, is a von Neumann algebra \mathcal{M} of random operators representing the quantum sector of the model. The Tomita-Takesaki theorem allows us to define the dynamics of random operators which depends on the state \phi . The same state defines the noncommutative probability measure (in the sense of Voiculescu's free probability theory). Moreover, the state \phi satisfies the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) condition, and can be interpreted as describing a generalized equilibrium state. By suitably averaging elements of the algebra \mbox{{\cal A}}, one recovers the standard geometry of spacetime. We show that any act of measurement, performed at a given spacetime point, makes the model to collapse to the standard quantum mechanics (on the group G). As an example we compute the noncommutative version of the closed Friedman world model. Generalized eigenvalues of the Einstein operator produce the correct components of the energy-momentum tensor.     Magnetic fields in supernova remnants and pulsar-wind nebulae

    We review the observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) and pulsar-wind nebulae (PWNe) that give information on the strength and orientation of magnetic fields. Radio polarimetry gives the degree of order of magnetic fields, and the orientation of the ordered component. Many young shell supernova remnants show evidence for synchrotron X-ray emission. The spatial analysis of this emission suggests that magnetic fields are amplified by one to two orders of magnitude in strong shocks. Detection of several remnants in TeV gamma rays implies a lower limit on the magnetic-field strength (or a measurement, if the emission process is inverse-Compton upscattering of cosmic microwave background photons). Upper limits to GeV emission similarly provide lower limits on magnetic-field strengths. In the historical shell remnants, lower limits on B range from 25 to 1000 microGauss. Two remnants show variability of synchrotron X-ray emission with a timescale of years. If this timescale is the electron-acceleration or radiative loss timescale, magnetic fields of order 1 mG are also implied. In pulsar-wind nebulae, equipartition arguments and dynamical modeling can be used to infer magnetic-field strengths anywhere from about 5 microGauss to 1 mG. Polarized fractions are considerably higher than in SNRs, ranging to 50 or 60% in some cases; magnetic-field geometries often suggest a toroidal structure around the pulsar, but this is not universal. Viewing-angle effects undoubtedly play a role. MHD models of radio emission in shell SNRs show that different orientations of upstream magnetic field, and different assumptions about electron acceleration, predict different radio morphology. In the remnant of SN 1006, such comparisons imply a magnetic-field orientation connecting the bright limbs, with a non-negligible gradient of its strength across the remnant.Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures; to be published in SpSciRev.     Fauna of euglossina (Hymenoptera: Apidae) from southwestern Amazonia, Acre, Brazil

    Male orchid bees were collected between December 2005 and September 2006 in 11 forest areas of different sizes in the region of Rio Branco, Acre, Southwestern Amazonia, Brazil. The bees were attracted by 6 aromatic compounds and collected by insect nets and scent baited traps. A total of 3,675 males of Euglossina in 4 genera and 36 species were collected. Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) was the most common (24.6%), followed by Eulaema meriana (Olivier) (14.6%), Euglossa amazonica Dressler (10.5%), Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier (10.5%) and Eulaema pseudocingulata (Oliveira) (7.2%). Cineole was the scent that attracted the greatest number of individuals (23.8%) and methyl salicylate the greatest number of species (28) for both methods of sampling. Thirty one bees of 9 species with pollinar orchid attached to their bodies were collected. The accumulative number of species stabilized after the 48th collection. Few species were abundant; the great majority were represented by less than 50 bees. The lack of standardized sample protocols limited very much the conclusions derived from comparisons among the majority of studies on Euglossina assemblages. However, the results presented here suggest that the State of Acre is very rich in those bees compared to other regions.Machos de abelhas Euglossina foram coletados entre dezembro de 2005 e setembro de 2006 em 11 áreas florestais de diferentes tamanhos na região de Rio Branco, Acre, Amazônia Sul-Ocidental. As abelhas foram atraídas por 6 substâncias odoríferas e coletadas com rede entomológica e armadilhas. Um total de 3.675 machos de Euglossina pertencentes a 4 gêneros e 36 espécies foi coletado. Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) foi a espécie mais comum (24,6%), seguida por Eulaema meriana (Olivier) (14,6%), Euglossa amazonica Dressler (10,5%), Eulaema nigrita Lepeletier (10,5%) e Eulaema pseudocingulata (Oliveira) (7,2%). Cineol foi a substância que atraiu maior número de indivíduos (23,8%) e metil salicilato o maior número de espécies (28) para ambos os métodos de coleta. Foram coletados 31 indivíduos pertencentes a 9 espécies portando polinários. O número acumulado de espécies coletadas na região estabilizou a partir da 48ª coleta. Poucas espécies foram abundantes, a maioria representada por menos que 50 indivíduos. A falta de um protocolo amostral padronizado tem limitado comparações entre trabalhos realizados em diferentes regiões. Contudo, os resultados aqui apresentados indicam que o Acre apresenta elevada riqueza dessas abelhas

    Global Positioning System aided autonomous construction plant control and guidance

    The advent of Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Positioning System (GPS) positioning means that this technology can now be used for dynamic control and guidance applications. The paper outlines the recent advances in GPS technology, which have enabled RTK GPS to become a reality. Tests have been carried out in construction plant control and monitoring applications with a demonstrated precision of the order of a few millimeters. The results are compared with those achieved using a laser level and a digital automatic level.

    Sea level in the British Isles: combining absolute gravimetry and continuous GPS to infer vertical land movements at tide gauges

    The current terrestrial reference frame, current global GPS products and current precise GPS processing techniques, limit the determination of accurate, long-term, vertical station velocities from continuous GPS measurements on a global scale. Several authors have reported biases in their vertical station velocities determined from continuous GPS when compared to alternative geodetic methods. It has been argued that until these problems have been resolved, the study of relative land and sea level rates on regional scales is the only way to investigate vertical land movements at tide gauges co-located with continuous GPS. In the UK, we have been operating a network of continuous GPS and absolute gravimetry stations for the purpose of determining vertical land movements at tide gauges for almost ten years. This network consists often continuous GPS stations and three absolute gravimetry stations, all of which are either co-located or close to tide gauges. In this paper, we compare vertical land movements obtained from both geodetic methods with estimates of vertical land movements from high quality, independent geological and geophysical evidence, and derive a GPS-specific bias for which the estimates of vertical land movements from all continuous GPS stations are corrected. Based on recently published mean sea level trends by the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level, we estimate a change in sea level, de-coupled from vertical land movements, for the British Isle

    The herb community of tropical forests is very little known, with few studies addressing its structure quantitatively. Even with this scarce body of information, it is clear that the ground herbs are a rich group, comprising 14 to 40% of the species found in total species counts in tropical forests. The present study had the objective of increasing the knowledge about the structure and composition of the ground-herb community and to compare the sites for which there are similar studies. The study was conducted in a tropical non-inundated and evergreen forest 90 km north of Manaus, AM. Ground herbs were surveyed in 22 transects of 40 m², distributed in five plots of 4 ha. The inventoried community was composed of 35 species, distributed in 24 genera and 18 families. Angiosperms were represented by 8 families and Pteridophytes by 10 families. Marantaceae (12 sp) and Cyperaceae (4 sp) were the richest families. Marantaceae and Poaceae were the families with greatest abundance and cover. Marantaceae, Poaceae, Heliconiaceae and Pteridophytes summed 96% of total herb cover, and therefore were responsible for almost all the cover of the community. The 10 most important species had 83.7% of the individuals. In general, the most abundant species were also the most frequent. Richness per transect varied from 7 to 19 species, and abundance varied from 30 to 114 individuals. The community structure was quite similar to 3 other sites in South America and one site in Asia.<br>A comunidade herbácea das florestas tropicais é pouco conhecida, havendo poucos estudos quantitativos de sua estrutura. Mesmo com esta quantidade escassa de informações, é possível afirmar que as ervas terrestres são um grupo rico, representando 14 a 40% das espécies encontradas em contagens totais de espécies em florestas tropicais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo aumentar o conhecimento sobre a estrutura e composição da comunidade de ervas terrestres e comparar as localidades para as quais há estudos similares. O estudo foi desenvolvido em uma floresta tropical não-inundada, 90 km ao norte de Manaus, AM. As ervas terrestres foram amostradas em 22 transectos de 40 m², distribuídos em cinco plots de 4 ha. A comunidade foi composta de 35 espécies, distribuídas em 24 gêneros e 18 famílias. As angiospermas foram representadas por 8 famílias e as pteridófitas por 10 famílias. Marantaceae (12 sp) e Cyperaceae (4 sp) foram as famílias mais ricas em espécies. Marantaceae e Poaceae foram as famílias com maior abundância e cobertura. A cobertura de Marantaceae, Poaceae, Heliconiaceae e pteridófitas somou 96% de toda a cobertura herbácea, e assim estes 4 grupos foram responsáveis por quase toda a cobertura da comunidade. As 10 espécies mais abundantes somaram 83,7% dos indivíduos. Em geral as espécies mais abundantes foram também as mais freqüentes. A riqueza por transecto variou de 7 a 19 espécies, e a abundância variou de 30 a 114 indivíduos. A estrutura da comunidade foi bastante similar à encontrada em 3 outras localidades na América do Sul e uma na Ásia
