    Grazing of spring and winter cereals in southwest Saskatchewan

    Non-Peer ReviewedA pasture system that combines the early high productivity of a spring cereal and the late-season growth ability of a winter cereal vegetative tillers may provide an important forage/pasture resource in southwestern Saskatchewan. At the Semiarid Agricultural Research Centre-Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, SK, two annual cereals, a spring barley, cultivar AC Lacombe, and a winter rye, Prima, were seeded in early May of 2001 into four pastures each 1.3 ha. Two pastures utilized steers that were implanted (Component™ E-S) and had received CRC rumensin while the other two pastures utilized steers with no implant or CRC rumensin. Results found that the implanted and CRC rumensin treated steers were more efficient in converting the cereal forage to gains than the control steers. Average daily gains of treated steers were higher than the control group and were 1.2 kg d-1 vs 0.7 kg d-1, respectively. Grazing days and total kg of livestock production per ha for treated verses control treatments were 133 verses 131 and 12.1 verses 5.5, respectively. It is possible that a synergistic and/or additive effect may have occurred through the use of the implant and rumensin treatments and resulted in a higher than expected improvement in animal performance

    Evaluation of perennial cereal rye longevity and forage production when harvested at different stages of maturities and under grazing

    Non-Peer ReviewedPerennial Cereal Rye (PC rye) (Secale cereale) has been promoted as a highly productive perennial forage crop for hay/silage and grazing for dryland areas. However earlier research done at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada – Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre (AAFC-SPARC) have found that time of seeding and defoliation on PC rye can greatly affect the number of plants surviving through the winter. Current research at AAFC-SPARC indicated that the stage of harvest (preboot, boot and flowering) does affect stand survival and that PC rye longevity is lower (P<0.001) than other short lived forage species, such as, Dahurian wildrye and Slender wheatgrass under irrigation or dryland. Grazing studies at AAFC-SPARC also observed PC rye plant counts decline by over 48% after two years of moderate grazing at the boot to heading plant stage

    Primordialists and Constructionists: a typology of theories of religion

    This article adopts categories from nationalism theory to classify theories of religion. Primordialist explanations are grounded in evolutionary psychology and emphasize the innate human demand for religion. Primordialists predict that religion does not decline in the modern era but will endure in perpetuity. Constructionist theories argue that religious demand is a human construct. Modernity initially energizes religion, but subsequently undermines it. Unpacking these ideal types is necessary in order to describe actual theorists of religion. Three distinctions within primordialism and constructionism are relevant. Namely those distinguishing: a) materialist from symbolist forms of constructionism; b) theories of origins from those pertaining to the reproduction of religion; and c) within reproduction, between theories of religious persistence and secularization. This typology helps to make sense of theories of religion by classifying them on the basis of their causal mechanisms, chronology and effects. In so doing, it opens up new sightlines for theory and research

    Breast feeding in Australia: A comparative study of Aboriginal and non Aboriginal women

    The superiority of breast feeding over bottle feeding is universally acknowledged, and its crucial contribution to infant health is accepted by health authorities. Australia in recognition of the importance of breast feeding to infant health, aims to increase the prevalence of breast feeding. Breast feeding provides benefits for all children, however the health advantage that is gained by breast feeding in comparison to artificial feeding is more apparent among disadvantaged groups. Aboriginal Australians are identified as one such disadvantaged group. This study compares the available literature regarding the prevalence of breast feeding in Aboriginal and non Aboriginal women. It is apparent that breast feeding prevalence differs, between population groups within Australia. Aboriginal children are less likely to have been breast fed than non Aboriginal children. The comparison, indicates that there are deficiencies in the research regarding breast feeding prevalence in both population groups. Many factors affect a woman's decision to breast feed, and the duration of her breast feeding. These factors include, socioeconomic status, age, marital status, educational attainment, occupation and smoking status. These factors are clearly associated with breast feeding in non Aboriginal women. For Aboriginal women, the factors influencing breast feeding are more complex. It is recommended therefore, that it is essential for future research to examine the attitudinal and socialdeterminants of infant feeding practices in Aboriginal women. This is necessary, if educational or interventional strategies are to be effective for this population

    Investigation of Changing Pore Topology and Porosity during Matrix Acidizing using Different Chelating Agents

    Core flooding acidizing experiments on sandstone/carbonate formation are usually performed in the laboratory to observe different physical phenomena and to design acidizing stimulation jobs for the field. During the tests, some key parameters are analyzed such as pore volume required for breakthrough as well as pressure. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is commonly used in the carbonate matrix acidizing while Mud acid (HF: HCl) is usually applied during the sandstone acidizing to remove damage around the well bore. However, many problems are associated with the application of these acids, such as fast reaction, corrosion and incompatibility of HCl with some minerals (illite). To overcome these problems, chelating agents (HEDTA, EDTA and GLDA) were used in this research. Colton tight sandstone and Guelph Dolomite core samples were used in this study. The experiments usually are defined in terms of porosity, permeability, dissolution and pore topology. Effluent samples were analyzed to determine dissolved iron, sodium, potassium, calcium and other positive ions using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). Meanwhile Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) was employed to determine porosity and pore structure of the core sample. Core flood experiments on Berea sandstone cores and dolomite samples with dimensions of 1.5 in × 3 in were conducted at a flow rate of 1 cc/min under 150oF temperature. NMR and porosity analysis concluded that applied chemicals are effective in creating fresh pore spaces. ICP analysis concluded that HEDTA showed good ability to chelate calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium and iron. It can be established from the analysis that HEDTA can increase more amount of permeability as compared to other chelates

    Neuropathological Findings In Chronic Relapsing Experimental Allergic Neuritis Induced In The Lewis Rat By Inoculation With Intradural Root Myelin And Treatment With Low Dose Cyclosporin A

    Experimental allergic neuritis (EAN) was induced in Lewis rats by inoculation with bovine intradural root myelin and adjuvants. Rats treated with subcutaneous cyclosporin A (CsA) (4mg/kg on 3 days per week from the day of inoculation until day 29) developed a chronic relapsing course. Tissues from the spinal cord, nerve roots, dorsal root ganglia and sciatic nerve of CsA-treated rats sampled during relapses and remissions were studied during or after episodes of acute EAN. Both control and CsA-treated animals studied in the first episode of EAN had evidence of inflammation and primary demyelination of the nerve roots and dorsal root ganglia. In control and CsA-treated animals in the second episode there was severe inflammation and demyelination and remyelination in the spinal nerves and sciatic nerves and dorsal columns of the spinal cord, particularly in later stages of the disease. In later episodes there was less inflammation, but there was continuing demyelination and onion bulbs were present. In animals sampled after recovery from chronic relapsing EAN onion bulbs were present. Occasional small onion bulbs were also observed in control animals that were inoculated with higher doses of myelin. Plasma cells were present in the inflammatory lesions of later episodes. Mast cells were also observed at different stages of the disease. We conclude that the CsA form of chronic relapsing EAN has clinical and pathological similarities with the human disease, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy

    Desenvolvimento de um roteiro conceitual para a gestão da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos no Caribe mexicano

    Coral reefs and mangroves support rich biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that range from food, recreational benefits and coastal protection services, among others. They are one of the most threatened ecosystems by urbanization processes. In this context, we developed a conceptual framework for the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services for these coastal environments. We based our workflow on two sections: “Information base” and “Governance” and use the Puerto Morelos Coastal region as a case study for coastal protection. Puerto Morelos is between two of the most touristic destinations of Mexico (Playa del Carmen and Cancun) that has experienced an increase of population in the past four decades resulting in an intensification of multiple threats to its ecosystems. We characterized the two ecosystems with a “Management Units” strategy. An expert-based ecosystem services matrix was also described in order to connect mangroves and coral reef ecosystems with the multiple beneficiaries. Then an ecosystem model (conceptual model and Global Biodiversity model) was developed. The conceptual model was useful in understanding the interplay processes between systems regarding the ecosystem service of “Coastal Protection”. The Global Biodiversity model evidenced the human-induced shifts in the biodiversity for mangrove and coral reefs ecosystems. Also, a projection for 2035 of “best” and “worst” scenarios was applied using GLOBIO3. A DPSIR conceptual framework was used to analyze environmental problems regarding ecosystem services maintenance. Finally, we evaluated a set of policies associated with these ecosystems that favor coastal protection integrity. This framework facilitates the identification of the most relevant processes and controls about the provision of coastal protection service. It can also be useful to better target management actions and as a tool to identify future management needs to tackle the challenges preventing more effective conservation of coastal environments.Recifes de coral e manguezais possuem rica biodiversidade e fornecem serviços ecossistêmicos, tais como, alimento, recreação, proteção costeira, entre outros. Esses ecossistemas encontram-se entre os mais ameaçados pelos processos de urbanização. Nesse contexto, desenvolvemos um roteiro conceitual para a gestão da biodiversidade e dos serviços ecossistêmicos desses ambientes costeiros. Organizamos nossa sequência de passos de trabalho em duas seções: “Base de informações” e “Governança” e usamos a região costeira da cidade de Puerto Morelos (México) como um estudo de caso para analisar o serviço de proteção de costa. Puerto Morelos encontra-se entre dois dos destinos mais turísticos do México (Playa del Carmen e Cancún), e portanto sua população vem aumentando nas últimas quatro décadas, resultando na intensificação de múltiplas ameaças para os ecossistemas. Primeiramente, caracterizamos os dois ecossistemas identificando-os como “Unidades de Gestão”, detalhando seus principais componentes e processos. Através de uma “Matriz de serviços ecossistêmicos”, construída com base na opinião de especialistas, foram sistematizados os principais serviços ecossistêmicos prestados pelos manguezais e recifes de corais aos múltiplos beneficiários. Em seguida, foi desenvolvida uma modelagem do sistema (e ecossistemas) através de sua representação na forma de um modelo conceitual e um modelo numérico de Biodiversidade Global. O modelo conceitual facilitou a compreensão dos processos de interação entre sistemas em relação ao serviço “Proteção Costeira”. O modelo numérico evidenciou as mudanças induzidas pelo homem na biodiversidade dos ecossistemas de manguezal e recifes de coral. Além disso, uma projeção dos cenários “melhor” e “pior” foi desenvolvida para 2035 usando GLOBIO3. A Estrutura conceitual DPSIR foi aplicada para analisar problemas ambientais relacionados à manutenção dos serviços ecossistêmicos. Finalmente, avaliamos um conjunto de políticas públicas associadas a esses ecossistemas e que favorecem a integridade da proteção costeira. Portanto, o roteiro facilitou a identificação dos principais processos e controles para a provisão de um serviço ecossistêmico.
