A convex shell structure for enhanced aerodynamic performance and/or reduced heat transfer requirements for a space vehicle that re-enters an atmosphere. The structure has a fore-body, an aft-body, a longitudinal axis and a transverse cross sectional shape, projected on a plane containing the longitudinal axis, that includes: first and second linear segments, smoothly joined at a first end of each the first and second linear segments to an end of a third linear segment by respective first and second curvilinear segments; and a fourth linear segment, joined to a second end of each of the first and second segments by curvilinear segments, including first and second ellipses having unequal ellipse parameters. The cross sectional shape is non-symmetric about the longitudinal axis. The fourth linear segment can be replaced by a sum of one or more polynomials, trigonometric functions or other functions satisfying certain constraints

Identification of RAPD marker linked to blast resistance gene in a somaclone of rice cultivar Araguaia.

O gene Pi-ar confere resistência para a raça IB-45 de Pyricularia grisea no somaclone derivado de panículas imaturas da cultivar de arroz (Oryza sativa) Araguaia. A técnica RAPD foi usada para identificar marcadores ligados a este gene utilizando a análise de misturas segregantes. Inicialmente o DNA do pai doador resistente SC09 e da cultivar Araguaia foram analisados usando primers arbitrários. Dos 240 primers, 203 produziram produtos amplificados. O DNA dos pais e dos bulks resistente e suscetível da população F2 foram testados usando 48 primers que diferenciaram os pais resistente e suscetível. Enquanto oito primers diferenciaram o bulk resistente do suscetível bem como o somaclone SC09 e Araguaia, somente o primer OPC02 ('GTGAGGCGTC') estava fortemente ligado (1,7cM) ao gene de resistência do somaclone SC09

Combined effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic scatterers on critical temperatures of superconductors with different gap anisotropy

The combined effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic defects and impurities on critical temperatures of superconductors with different gap anisotropy is studied theoretically within the weak coupling limit of the BCS model. An expression is derived which relates the critical temperature to relaxation rates of charge carriers by nonmagnetic and magnetic scatterers, as well as to the coefficient of anisotropy of the superconducting order parameter on the Fermi surface. Field and greenhouse inoculation methods for assessment of sheath blight resistance in rice.

Field and greenhouse inoculation methods were compared to determine the genetic variation for resistance to Rhizoctonia solani in 38 somaclones of rice cultivar Metica-1. Rice plants in pots were inoculated with isolate 4F1 at the age of sixty four days, with 2.0 g of the fungal culture, multiplied on rice grain and hull medium and placed on the soil surface around the plant. The differences among somaclones in relation to lesion height were significant and varied from 6.5 to 15.5 cm. In the field trial of artificial inoculation with fungal culture, 52 days after planting, the lesion height varied from 6.2 to 17.7 cm. The correlation between disease severity in the greenhouse and the field was positive and highly significant (r=0.44; P< 0.01), indicating the greenhouse inoculation as a safe method for screening germplasm for sheath blight resistance.Nota técnica

Genuine Multiparty Quantum Entanglement Suppresses Multiport Classical Information Transmission

We establish a universal complementarity relation between the capacity of classical information transmission by employing a multiparty quantum state as a multiport quantum channel, and the genuine multipartite entanglement of the quantum state. The classical information transfer is from a sender to several receivers by using the quantum dense coding protocol with the multiparty quantum state shared between the sender and the receivers. Genetic and phenotypic characterization of isolates of Pyricularia grisea from the rice cultivars Epagri 108 and 109 in the State of Tocantins.

Foi constatada a ocorrência de uma epidemia de brusone, na safra 1998/99 nas cultivares de arroz (Oryza sativa) irrigado Epagri 108 e 109, nos municípios de Lagoa da Confusão e Duerê, do Estado do Tocantins, na safra 1998-99. Foram utilizados "DNA fingerprinting" e análise fenotípica de virulência para determinar a diversidade entre isolados de Pyricularia grisea coletados nestas duas cultivares no ano de epidemia. A análise de DNA dos isolados foi realizada utilizando rep-PCR para amplificação das sequências entre os elementos repetitivos Pot2. Dois grupos distintos de bandas polimórficas ou linhagens foram identificados entre os 53 isolados coletados em nove diferentes lavouras comerciais. O padrão de virulência dos isolados foi estudado através de inoculações artificiais em 32 genótipos, em casa de vegetação. O dendrograma construído com base nos dados de virulência fenotípica, permitiu distinguir apenas um grupo, considerando o nível de similaridade de 77%. O patótipo predominante IB-45 foi representado por 47 dos 53 isolados correspondendo a 83%. Foram identificados quatro patótipos (IB-1, IB-9, IB-13 e IB-41) entre isolados coletados nestas duas cultivares. Não houve relação entre agrupamento dos isolados por rep-PCR e patótipos. Os resultados ainda demonstraram que os isolados de P. grisea provenientes das cultivares Epagri 108 e 109 apresentaram estreita diversidade fenotípica e genética. A epidemia da brusone nestas duas cultivares, um ano após o lançamento, pode ser atribuída ao surgimento do novo patótipo IB-45 ou à sua preexistência em baixa freqüência e rápido aumento no campo
