Three loop MSbar renormalization of QED in the 't~Hooft-Veltman gauge
Quantum electrodynamics (QED) fixed in the 't~Hooft-Veltman gauge is
renormalized to three loops in the MSbar scheme. The beta-functions and
anomalous dimensions are computed as functions of the usual QED coupling and
the additional coupling, xi, which is introduced as part of the nonlinear gauge
fixing condition. Similar to the maximal abelian gauge of quantum
chromodynamics, the renormalization of the gauge parameter is singular.Comment: 8 latex page
A fundamental test of the Higgs Yukawa coupling at RHIC in A+A collisions
Searches for the intermediate boson, , the heavy quantum of the Weak
Interaction, via its semi-leptonic decay, , in the 1970's instead
discovered unexpectedly large hadron production at high , notably ,
which provided a huge background of from internal and external
conversions. Methods developed at the CERN ISR which led to the discovery of
direct-single- in 1974, later determined to be from the semi-leptonic
decay of charm which had not yet been discovered, were used by PHENIX at RHIC
to make precision measurements of heavy quark production in p-p and Au+Au
collisions, leading to the puzzle of apparent equal suppression of light and
heavy quarks in the QGP. If the Higgs mechanism gives mass to gauge bosons but
not to fermions, then a proposal that all 6 quarks are nearly massless in a
QGP, which would resolve the puzzle, can not be excluded. This proposal can be
tested with future measurements of heavy quark correlations in A+A collisionsComment: 12 pages, 16 figures, 26th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, Ocho

Supersymmetric photonic signals at LEP
We explore and contrast the single-photon and diphoton signals expected at
LEP 2, that arise from neutralino-gravitino (e^+ e^- -> chi + gravitino ->
gamma + E_miss) and neutralino-neutralino (e^+ e^- -> chi + chi -> gamma +
gamma + E_miss) production in supersymmetric models with a light gravitino. LEP
1 limits imply that one may observe either one, but not both, of these signals
at LEP 2, depending on the values of the neutralino and gravitino masses:
single-photons for m_chi > Mz and m_gravitino < 3 x 10^-5 eV; diphotons for
m_chi < Mz and all allowed values of m_gravitino.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures (included). Shortened version to appear in

Single-photon signals at LEP in supersymmetric models with a light gravitino
We study the single-photon signals expected at LEP in models with a very
light gravitino. The dominant process is neutralino-gravitino production (e+e-
-> chi+ G) with subsequent neutralino decay via chi->gamma+G, giving a
gamma+E_miss signal. We first calculate the cross section at arbitrary
center-of-mass energies and provide new analytic expressions for the
differential cross section valid for general neutralino compositions. We then
consider the constraints on the gravitino mass from LEP 1 and LEP161
single-photon searches, and possible such searches at the Tevatron. We show
that it is possible to evade the stringent LEP 1 limits and still obtain an
observable rate at LEP 2, in particular in the region of parameter space that
may explain the CDF e+e+gamma+gamma+E_T,miss event. As diphoton events from
neutralino pair-production would not be kinematically accessible in this
scenario, the observation of whichever photonic signal will discriminate among
the various light-gravitino scenarios in the literature. We also perform a
Monte Carlo simulation of the expected energy and angular distributions of the
emitted photon, and of the missing invariant mass expected in the events.
Finally we specialize the results to the case of a recently proposed
one-parameter no-scale supergravity model.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX, 14 figures (included
SUSY signals at HERA in the no-scale flipped SU(5) supergravity model
Sparticle production and detection at HERA are studied within the recently
proposed no-scale flipped supergravity model. Among the various
reaction channels that could lead to sparticle production at HERA, only the
following are within its limit of sensitivity in this model: , where are the
two lightest neutralinos and is the lightest chargino. We study the
elastic and deep-inelastic contributions to the cross sections using the
Weizs\"acker-Williams approximation. We find that the most promising
supersymmetric production channel is right-handed selectron ()
plus first neutralino (), with one hard electron and missing energy
signature. The channel leads to comparable rates but also
allows jet final states. A right-handedly polarized electron beam at HERA would
shut off the latter channel and allow preferentially the former one. With an
integrated luminosity of {\cal L}=100\ipb, HERA can extend the present LEPI
lower bounds on by
\approx25\GeV, while {\cal L}=1000\ipb will make HERA competitive with
LEPII. We also show that the Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS) at HERA is an
excellent supersymmetry detector which can provide indirect information about
the sparticle masses by measuring the leading proton longitudinal momentum
distribution.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures (available upon request as uuencoded file or

Novel low resistivity glass: MRPC detectors for ultra high rate applications
Abstract Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) are often used as time-of-flight (TOF) detectors for high-energy physics and nuclear experiments thanks to their excellent time accuracy. For the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) TOF system, MRPCs are required to work at particle fluxes on the order of 1-10 kHz/ c m 2 for the outer region and 10-25 kHz/ c m 2 for the central region. Better time resolution will allow particle identification with TOF techniques to be performed at higher momenta. From our previous studies, a time resolution of 25 ps has been obtained with a 20-gap MRPC of 140 μ m gap size with enhanced rate capbability. By using a new type of commercially available thin low-resistivity glass, further improvement MRPC rate capability is possible. In order to study the rate capability of the 10-gap MRPC built with this new low-resistivity glass, we have performed tests using the continuous electron beam at ELBE. This 10-gap MRPC, with 160 μ m gaps, reaches 97% efficiency at 19.2 kV and a time resolution of 36 ps at particle fluxes near 2 kHz/ c m 2 . At a flux of 100 kHz/ c m 2 , the efficiency is still above 95% and a time resolution of 50 ps is obtained, which would fulfil the requirement of CBM TOF system
High Scale Physics Connection to LHC Data
The existing data appears to provide hints of an underlying high scale
theory. These arise from the gauge coupling unification, from the smallness of
the neutrino masses, and via a non-vanishing muon anomaly. An overview of high
scale models is given with a view to possible tests at the Large Hadron
Collider. Specifically we discuss here some generic approaches to deciphering
their signatures. We also consider an out of the box possibility of a four
generation model where the fourth generation is a mirror generation rather than
a sequential generation. Such a scenario can lead to some remarkably distinct
signatures at the LHC.Comment: 23 pages, no figures. Based on invited lectures at the 46th Course at

Multijet production in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA and determination of α_{s}
Multijet production rates in neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured in the range of exchanged boson virtualities 10 5 GeV and –1 < η_{LAB}^{jet} < 2.5. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations describe the data well. The value of the strong coupling constant α_{s} (M_{z}), determined from the ratio of the trijet to dijet cross sections, is α_{s} (M_{z}) = 0.1179 ± 0.0013 (stat.)_{-0.0046}^{+0.0028}(exp.)_{-0.0046}^{+0.0028}(th.)

Study of single muons with the Large Volume Detector at Gran Sasso Laboratory
The present study is based on the sample of about 3 mln single muons observed
by LVD at underground Gran Sasso Laboratory during 36500 live hours from June
1992 to February 1998. We have measured the muon intensity at slant depths from
3 km w.e. to 20 km w.e. Most events are high energy downward muons produced by
meson decay in the atmosphere. The analysis of these muons has revealed the
power index of pion and kaon spectrum: 2.76 \pm 0.05. The reminders are
horizontal muons produced by the neutrino interactions in the rock surrounding
LVD. The value of this flux is obtained. The results are compared with Monte
Carlo simulations and the world data.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in "Physics of Atomic
