    Measurement of the Cross Section Asymmetry of the Reaction gp-->pi0p in the Resonance Energy Region Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV

    The cross section asymmetry Sigma has been measured for the photoproduction of pi0-mesons off protons, using polarized photons in the energy range Eg = 0.5 - 1.1 GeV. The CM angular coverage is Theta = 85 - 125 deg with energy and angle steps of 25 MeV and 5 deg, respectively. The obtained Sigma data, which cover the second and third resonance regions, are compared with existing experimental data and recent phenomenological analyses. The influence of these measurements on such analyses is also considered

    TGF-beta(2)- and H2O2-Induced Biological Changes in Optic Nerve Head Astrocytes Are Reduced by the Antioxidant Alpha-Lipoic Acid

    Background/Aims: The goal of the present study was to determine whether transforming growth factor-beta(2) (TGF-beta(2))- and oxidative stress-induced cellular changes in cultured human optic nerve head (ONH) astrocytes could be reduced by pretreatment with the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (LA). Methods: Cultured ONH astrocytes were treated with 1.0 ng/ml TGF-beta(2) for 24 h or 200 mu M hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 1 h. Lipid peroxidation was measured by a decrease in cis-pari-naric acid fluorescence. Additionally, cells were pretreated with different concentrations of LA before TGF-beta 2 or H2O2 exposure. Expressions of the heat shock protein (Hsp) alpha B-crystallin and Hsp27, the extracellular matrix (ECM) component fibronectin and the ECM-modulating protein connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) were examined with immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR analysis. Results: Both TGF-beta(2) and H2O2 increased lipid peroxidation. Treatment of astrocytes with TGF-beta(2) and H2O2 upregulated the expression of alpha B-crystallin, Hsp27, fibronectin and CTGF. Pretreatment with different concentrations of LA reduced the TGF-beta(2)- and H2O2-stimulated gene expressions. Conclusion: We showed that TGF-beta(2)- and H2O2-stimulated gene expressions could be prevented by pretreatment with the antioxidant LA in cultured human ONH astrocytes. Therefore, it is tempting to speculate that the use of antioxidants could have protective effects in glaucomatous optic neuropathy. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Base

    Charmonium Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    The electroproduction of J/psi and psi(2S) mesons is studied in elastic, quasi-elastic and inclusive reactions for four momentum transfers 2 Q^2 80 GeV^2 and photon-proton centre of mass energies 25 W 180 GeV. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the electron proton collider HERA in the years 1995 to 1997. The total virtual photon-proton cross section for elastic J/psi production is measured as a function of Q^2 and W. The dependence of the production rates on the square of the momentum transfer from the proton (t) is extracted. Decay angular distributions are analysed and the ratio of the longitudinal and transverse cross sections is derived. The ratio of the cross sections for quasi-elastic psi(2S) and J/psi meson production is measured as a function of Q^2. The results are discussed in terms of theoretical models based upon perturbative QCD. Differential cross sections for inclusive and inelastic production of J/psi mesons are determined and predictions within two theoretical frameworks are compared with the data, the non-relativistic QCD factorization approach including colour octet and colour singlet contributions, and the model of Soft Colour Interactions

    Measurement of event shape variables in deep inelastic e p scattering

    Deep inelastic e p scattering data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are used to study the event shape variables thrust, jet broadening and jet mass in the current hemisphere of the Breit frame over a large range of momentum transfers Q between 7 GeV and 100 GeV. The data are compared with results from e+e- experiments. Using second order QCD calculations and an approach to relate hadronisation effects to power corrections an analysis of the Q dependences of the means of the event shape parameters is presented, from which both the power corrections and the strong coupling constant are determined without any assumption on fragmentation models.     Proton dissociative ρ and elastic φ electroproduction at HERA

    The electroproduction of ρ mesons with proton diffractive dissociation for Q2 > 7 GeV2 and the elastic electroproduction of φ mesons for Q2 > 6 GeV2 are studied in e+p collisions at HERA with the H1 detector, for an integrated luminosity of 2.8 pb-1. The dependence of the cross sections on Pt2 and Q2 is measured, and the vector meson polarisation obtained. The cross section ratio between proton dissociative and elastic production of ρ mesons is measured and discussed in the framework of the factorisation hypothesis of diffractive vertices.     Photoproduction of K0 and Λ at HERA and a comparison with deep inelastic scattering

    Inclusive K0 and Λ photoproduction has been investigated at HERA with the H1 detector at an average photon-proton center of mass energy of 200 GeV in the transverse momentum range 0.5 < pt < 5 GeV. The production rates as a function of pt and center of mass rapidity are compared to those obtained in deep inelastic scattering at 〈Q2〉 = 23 GeV2. A similar comparison is made of the rapidity spectra of charged particles. The rate of strangeness photoproduction is compared with pp̄ measurements.     Photo-production of ψ(2S) mesons at HERA

    Quasi-elastic (z > 0.95) photo-production of ψ(2S) mesons has been observed at HERA for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 40 to 160 GeV. The ψ(2S) mesons were identified through their decays to ℓ+ℓ- and to J/ψπ+π-, where the J/ψ subsequently decays to ℓ+ℓ-, the lepton ℓ being either a muon or an electron. The cross-section for quasi-elastic photoproduction was measured to be (18.0 ± 2.8(stat) ± 3.0(syst)) nb at a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy of 80 GeV. The ratio of the ψ(2S) to J/ψ quasi-elastic cross-sections is (0.150 ± 0.027(stat) + 0.022(syst)). © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.0SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
