    Blind Dates: Examining the Expression of Temporality in Historical Photographs

    This paper explores the capacity of computer vision models to discern temporal information in visual content, focusing specifically on historical photographs. We investigate the dating of images using OpenCLIP, an open-source implementation of CLIP, a multi-modal language and vision model. Our experiment consists of three steps: zero-shot classification, fine-tuning, and analysis of visual content. We use the De Boer Scene Detection dataset, containing 39,866 gray-scale historical press photographs from 1950 to 1999. The results show that zero-shot classification is relatively ineffective for image dating, with a bias towards predicting dates in the past. Fine-tuning OpenCLIP with a logistic classifier improves performance and eliminates the bias. Additionally, our analysis reveals that images featuring buses, cars, cats, dogs, and people are more accurately dated, suggesting the presence of temporal markers. The study highlights the potential of machine learning models like OpenCLIP in dating images and emphasizes the importance of fine-tuning for accurate temporal analysis. Future research should explore the application of these findings to color photographs and diverse datasets.</p

    The Compression of Dark Matter Halos by Baryonic Infall

    The initial radial density profiles of dark matter halos are laid down by gravitational collapse in hierarchical structure formation scenarios and are subject to further compression as baryons cool and settle to the halo centers. We here describe an explicit implementation of the algorithm, originally developed by Young, to calculate changes to the density profile as the result of adiabatic infall in a spherical halo model. Halos with random motion are more resistant to compression than are those in which random motions are neglected, which is a key weakness of the simple method widely employed. Young's algorithm results in density profiles in excellent agreement with those from N-body simulations. We show how the algorithm may be applied to determine the original uncompressed halos of real galaxies, a step which must be computed with care in order to enable a confrontation with theoretical predictions from theories such as LCDM.Comment: Revised version for ApJ. 8 pages, 8 figures, latex uses emulateap

    A HST study of the stellar populations in the cometary dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 2366

    We present V and I photometry of the resolved stars in the cometary dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 2366, using Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches down to I~26.0 mag. It reveals not only a young population of blue main-sequence stars (age <30 Myr) but also an intermediate-age population of blue and red supergiants (20 Myr<age<100 Myr), and an older evolved populations of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (age >100 Myr) and red giant branch (RGB) stars (age >1 Gyr). The measured magnitude I=23.65+/-0.10 mag of the RGB tip results in a distance modulus m-M=27.67+/-0.10, which corresponds to a distance of 3.42+/-0.15 Mpc, in agreement with previous distance determinations. The youngest stars are associated with the bright complex of HII regions NGC 2363=Mrk 71 in the southwest extremity of the galaxy. As a consequence of the diffusion and relaxation processes of stellar ensembles, the older the stellar population is, the smoother and more extended is its spatial distribution. An underlying population of older stars is found throughout the body of NGC 2366. The most notable feature of this older population is the presence of numerous relatively bright AGB stars. The number ratio of AGB to RGB stars and the average absolute brightness of AGB stars in NGC 2366 are appreciably higher than in the BCD VII Zw 403, indicating a younger age of the AGB stars in NGC 2366.     Survival following surgical treatment for anorectal melanoma seems similar for local excision and extensive resection regardless of nodal involvement

    Background: Anorectal melanoma is a rare malignancy with a dismal prognosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the survival per stage is influenced by the surgical approaches (local excision or extensive resection), to assess prognostic factors of survival, and to answer the question whether the practiced surgical approaches changed over time. Methods: Dutch cancer registry organizations (IKNL and PALGA) were queried for all patients with a diagnosis of anorectal melanoma (1989-2019). Patients with disseminated disease at diagnosis were excluded. Survival outcomes were compared for the two surgical approaches stratified by stage (clinical node negative (cN0) and clinical node positive (cN+)) and date of diagnosis. Results: A total of 103 patients were included in this study. In both cN0 and cN+ patients the surgical strategy did not significantly influence survival (cN0: 21.7% 5-year survival, median 25 months for local excision versus 13.7% 5-year survival, median 17 months for extensive resection (p = 0.228), cN+: 11.1% 5-year survival for local excision, median 17 months versus 8.7% 5-year survival, median 14 months for extensive resection (p = 0.741)). Stage and date of diagnosis showed to be prognostic factors of survival. The ratio between the two surgical approaches was unchanged over three decades. Conclusions: Extensive resection does not seem to improve survival in both cN0 and cN+ anorectal melanoma patients compared to local excision. However in the past three decades no shift towards local excision has been found. cN+ stage and an older date of diagnosis are predictors for worse survival
