Neutrino Oscillations in Intermediate States.II -- Wave Packets
We analyze oscillations of intermediate neutrinos in terms of the scattering
of particles described by Gaussian wave packets. We study a scalar model as in
a previous paper (I) but in realistic situations, where the two particles of
the initial state and final state are wave packets and neutrinos are in the
intermediate state. The oscillation of the intermediate neutrino is found from
the time evolution of the total transition probability between the initial
state and final state. The effect of a finite lifetime and a finite relaxation
time are also studied. We find that the oscillation pattern depends on the
magnitude of wave packet sizes of particles in the initial state and final
state and the lifetime of the initial particle. For eV, the oscillation probability deviates from that of the standard
formula if the wave packet sizes are around m for 0.4 MeV neutrino.Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures. typos corrected, appendix adde
Measurement of tau polarization in e+ e- annihilation at sqrt{s}=58 GeV
The polarization of tau leptons in the reaction e+ e- --> tau+ tau- has been
measured using a e+e- collider, TRISTAN, at the center-of-mass energy of 58
GeV. From the kinematical distributions of daughter particles in tau --> e nu
nu-bar, mu nu nu-bar, rho nu or pi(K) nu decays, the average polarization of
tau- and its forward-backward asymmetry have been evaluated to be 0.012 +-
0.058 and 0.029 +- 0.057, respectively.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Confining Properties of the Homogeneous Self-Dual Field and the Effective Potential in SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory
We examine in non-Abelian gauge theory the heavy quark limit in the presence
of the (anti-)self-dual homogeneous background field and see that a confining
potential emerges, consistent with the Wilson criterion, although the potential
is quadratic and not linear in the quark separation. This builds upon the
well-known feature that propagators in such a background field are entire
functions. The way in which deconfinement can occur at finite temperature is
then studied in the static temporal gauge by calculation of the effective
potential at high temperature. Finally we discuss the problems to be surmounted
in setting up the calculation of the effective potential nonperturbatively on
the lattice.Comment: 31 pages, LaTeX, expanded discussion and derivations in Sections 2

Characterisation of feline renal cortical fibroblast cultures and their transcriptional response to transforming growth factor beta 1
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in geriatric cats, and the most prevalent pathology is chronic tubulointerstitial inflammation and fibrosis. The cell type predominantly responsible for the production of extra-cellular matrix in renal fibrosis is the myofibroblast, and fibroblast to myofibroblast differentiation is probably a crucial event. The cytokine TGF-β1 is reportedly the most important regulator of myofibroblastic differentiation in other species. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterise renal fibroblasts from cadaverous kidney tissue of cats with and without CKD, and to investigate the transcriptional response to TGF-β1
Dynamical Zero Modes and Pure Glue in Light-Cone Field Theory
We consider light-cone quantized on a `cylinder' with
periodic boundary conditions on the gluon fields. This is the framework of
discretized light-cone quantization. We review the argument that the light-cone
gauge is not attainable. The zero mode is a dynamical and gauge
invariant field. The attainable gauge has a Gribov ambiguity. We exactly solve
the problem of pure glue theory coupled to some zero mode external sources. We
verify the identity of the front and the more familiar instant form approaches.
We obtain a discrete spectrum of vacuum states and their wavefunctions.Comment: 13 pages LaTex report#: OHSTPY-HEP-TH-94-001, MPIH-V9-94 Revised

The Reform of Employee Compensation in China’s Industrial Enterprises
Although employee compensation reform in Chinese industrial sector has been discussed in the literature, the real changes in compensation system and pay practices have received insufficient attention and warrant further examination. This paper briefly reviews the pre- and post-reform compensation system, and reports the results of a survey of pay practices in the four major types of industrial enterprises in China. The research findings indicate that the type of enterprise ownership has little influence on general compensation practices, adoption of profit-sharing plans, and subsidy and allowance packages. In general, pay is linked more to individual performance and has become an important incentive to Chinese employees. However, differences are found across the enterprise types with regard to performance-related pay. Current pay practices are positively correlated to overall effectiveness of the enterprise
Effective Functional Form of Regge Trajectories
We present theoretical arguments and strong phenomenological evidence that
hadronic Regge trajectories are essentially nonlinear and can be well
approximated, for phenomenological purposes, by a specific square-root form.Comment: 29 pages, LaTeX. Published versio
