Corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure due to deuteron excitations
We consider the corrections to deuterium hyperfine structure originating from
the two-photon exchange between electron and deuteron, with the deuteron
excitations in the intermediate states. In particular, the motion of the two
intermediate nucleons as a whole is taken into account. The problem is solved
in the zero-range approximation. The result is in good agreement with the
experimental value of the deuterium hyperfine splitting.Comment: 7 pages, LaTe
Linking and causality in globally hyperbolic spacetimes
The linking number is defined if link components are zero homologous.
Our affine linking invariant generalizes to the case of linked
submanifolds with arbitrary homology classes. We apply to the study of
causality in Lorentz manifolds. Let be a spacelike Cauchy surface in a
globally hyperbolic spacetime . The spherical cotangent bundle
is identified with the space of all null geodesics in

The NASA Spitzer Space Telescope
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly the Space Infrared Telescope Facility) is the fourth and final facility in the Great Observatories Program, joining Hubble Space Telescope (1990), the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (1991–2000), and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory (1999). Spitzer, with a sensitivity that is almost three orders of magnitude greater than that of any previous ground-based and space-based infrared observatory, is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the creation of the universe, the formation and evolution of primitive galaxies, the origin of stars and planets, and the chemical evolution of the universe. This review presents a brief overview of the scientific objectives and history of infrared astronomy. We discuss Spitzer's expected role in infrared astronomy for the new millennium. We describe pertinent details of the design, construction, launch, in-orbit checkout, and operations of the observatory and summarize some science highlights from the first two and a half years of Spitzer operations. More information about Spitzer can be found at http://spitzer.caltech.edu/
Gravitational Collapse in Turbulent Molecular Clouds. II. Magnetohydrodynamical Turbulence
Hydrodynamic supersonic turbulence can only prevent local gravitational
collapse if the turbulence is driven on scales smaller than the local Jeans
lengths in the densest regions, a very severe requirement (Paper I). Magnetic
fields have been suggested to support molecular clouds either magnetostatically
or via magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves. Whereas the first mechanism would form
sheet-like clouds, the second mechanism not only could exert a pressure onto
the gas counteracting the gravitational forces, but could lead to a transfer of
turbulent kinetic energy down to smaller spatial scales via MHD wave
interactions. This turbulent magnetic cascade might provide sufficient energy
at small scales to halt local collapse.
We test this hypothesis with MHD simulations at resolutions up to 256^3
zones, done with ZEUS-3D. We first derive a resolution criterion for
self-gravitating, magnetized gas: in order to prevent collapse of
magnetostatically supported regions due to numerical diffusion, the minimum
Jeans length must be resolved by four zones. Resolution of MHD waves increases
this requirement to roughly six zones. We then find that magnetic fields cannot
prevent local collapse unless they provide magnetostatic support. Weaker
magnetic fields do somewhat delay collapse and cause it to occur more uniformly
across the supported region in comparison to the hydrodynamical case. However,
they still cannot prevent local collapse for much longer than a global
free-fall time.Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, accepted by Ap
Implications of a Modified Higgs to Diphoton Decay Width
Motivated by recent results from Higgs searches at the Large Hadron Collider,
we consider possibilities to enhance the diphoton decay width of the Higgs
boson over the Standard Model expectation, without modifying either its
production rate or the partial widths in the WW and ZZ channels. Studying
effects of new charged scalars, fermions and vector bosons, we find that
significant variations in the diphoton width may be possible if the new
particles have light masses of the order of a few hundred GeV and sizeable
couplings to the Higgs boson. Such couplings could arise naturally if there is
large mass mixing between two charged particles that is induced by the Higgs
vacuum expectation value. In addition, there is generically also a shift in the
Z + Gamma partial width, which in the case of new vector bosons tends to be of
similar magnitude as the shift in the diphoton partial width, but smaller in
other cases. Therefore simultaneous measurements in these two channels could
reveal properties of new charged particles at the electroweak scale.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures; v2: updated references and minor improvements in

Territorial Tactics: The Socio-spatial Significance of Private Policing Strategies in Cape Town
This paper analyses the policing strategies of private security companies operating in urban space. An existing literature has considered the variety of ways that territory becomes of fundamental importance in the work of public police forces. However, this paper examines territory in the context of private security companies. Drawing on empirical research in Cape Town, it examines how demarcated territories become key subjects in private policing. Private security companies are responsible for a relatively small section of the city, while in contrast the public police ultimately have to see city space as a whole. Hence, private policing strategy becomes one of displacement, especially of so-called undesirables yielding a patchworked public space associated with private enclaves of consumption. The conclusions signal the historical resonances and comparative implications of these political-legal-security dynamics. © 2013 Urban Studies Journal Limited

Structure analysis of the virtual Compton scattering amplitude at low energies
We analyze virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon at low energies in a
covariant, model-independent formalism.
We define a set of invariant functions which, once the irregular nucleon pole
terms have been subtracted in a gauge-invariant fashion, is free of poles and
kinematical zeros.
The covariant treatment naturally allows one to implement the constraints due
to Lorentz and gauge invariance, crossing symmetry, and the discrete
symmetries.
In particular, when applied to the reaction,
charge-conjugation symmetry in combination with nucleon crossing generates four
relations among the ten originally proposed generalized polarizabilities of the
nucleon.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX2e/RevTeX, no figures, original sections IV.-VI.
