Soft-excess in ULX spectra: disc emission or wind absorption?
We assess the claim that Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) host
intermediate-mass black holes (BH) by comparing the cool disc-blackbody model
with a range of other models, namelly a more complex physical model based on a
power-law component slightly modified at various energies by smeared
emission/absorption lines from highly-ionized gas. Our main conclusion is that
the presence of a soft excess, or a soft deficit, depends entirely on the
energy range to which we choose to fit the ``true'' power-law continuum; hence,
we argue that those components should not be taken as evidence for accretion
disc emission, nor used to infer BH masses. We speculate that bright ULXs could
be in a spectral state similar to (or an extension of) the steep-power-law
state of Galactic BH candidates, in which the disc is completely comptonized
and not directly detectable, and the power-law emission may be modified by the

Sex and Age-Related Differences in Neuroticism and Allostatic Load Index in Urban Patients with General Anxiety Disorder Treated with Alprazolam
Introduction: Allostatic Load (AL) index proposes indicators for the functioningof the main potentially stress-affected systems. Sex differences instress response and stress-related diseases susceptibility have been describedfor the general population. In this observational study we describe the effectsof sex and age on allostatic load variables, in a cohort of patients with generalanxiety disorders and neuroticism treated with alprazolam during 12 weeks,before and after treatment. Methods: Patients with general (DSM IV) anxietydisorders with >6 in Hamilton scale, Allostatic load (>1 Crimmins and SeemanAL modified criteria) and neuroticism >18 (NEO-FFI inventory), wereincluded. All patients completed psychiatric assessment, allostatic load indexdetermination before (−1 week) and after 12 weeks of treatment with alprazolam(0.25 - 1 mg/t.i.d). Allostatic load parameters comprised cardiovascular,metabolic and inflammatory variables. Univariate analysis (two-wayANOVA), Student?s t-test (related variables) and Pearson correlations weredetermined. Results: Fifty-four patients, 35 females (48.6 ± 11.7 years) and 19males (44.2 ± 12.8 years) with general anxiety disorder were included; 28 patientswith <50 years (60.7% females), and 26 with ≥50 years (69.2% females).Younger patients (<50 years) (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.02) were significantlyassociated with lower allostatic load index after treatment. However, womenshowed higher anxiety levels in both, before (Two-way ANOVA, p = 0.059)and after treatment (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.005), with a significantly betterprofile than men in many individual AL variables, particularly cardiovascular(systolic blood pressure), obesity (body mass index), and lipids (higher HDLlevels). After treatment a higher reduction of fibrinogen levels was found inmen (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.02). Conclusions: In this preliminary analysiswe described sex and age differences in psychiatry aspects and allostatic loadindexes in patients with general anxiety disorders in the short-term treatmentwith alprazolam. On analytic properties of Meixner-Sobolev orthogonal polynomials of higher order difference operators
In this contribution we consider sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal
with respect to Sobolev-type inner product where is the Meixner linear operator,
, , , and
is the forward difference operator , or the backward difference
operator .
We derive an explicit representation for these polynomials. The ladder
operators associated with these polynomials are obtained, and the linear
difference equation of second order is also given. In addition, for these
polynomials we derive a -term recurrence relation. Finally, we find the
Mehler-Heine type formula for the case
Fifteen years follow-up of photorefractive keratectomy up to 10 D of myopia: outcomes and analysis of the refractive regression
PURPOSE:
To evaluate outcomes of photorefractive keratectomy up to -10.00 D of myopia and -4.50 of astigmatism and to develop a predictive model for the refractive changes in the long term.
SETTING:
Vissum Corporation and Miguel Hernandez University (Alicante, Spain).
DESIGN:
Retrospective-prospective observational series of cases.
METHODS:
This study included 33 eyes of 33 patients aged 46.79±7.04 years (range 40-57) operated with the VISX 20/20 excimer laser with optical zones of 6 mm. No mitomycin C was used in any of these cases. The minimum follow-up was 15 years. The main outcome measures were: uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity, manifest refraction and corneal topography. Linear regression models were developed from the observed refractive changes over time.
RESULTS:
Safety and efficacy indexes at 15 years were 1.18 and 0.83, respectively. No statistically significant differences were detected for any keratometric variable during the follow-up (p≥0.103). 15 years after the surgery 54.55% of the eyes were within ±1.00 D of spherical equivalent and 84.85% within ±2.00 D. The uncorrected distance visual acuity at 15 years was 20/25 or better in 60.6% of the eyes and 20/40 or better in 72.73% of the eyes. The correlation between the attempted and the achieved refractions was r=0.948 (p<0.001) at 1 year, and r=0.821 (p<0.001) at 15 years. No corneal ectasia was detected in any case during the follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS:
Photorefractive keratectomy is a safe refractive procedure in the long term within the range of myopia currently considered suitable for its use, although its efficacy decreases with time, especially, in high myopia. The model developed predicts a myopic regression of 2.00 D at 15 years for an ablation depth of 130 µm
Polydispersity Effects in the Dynamics and Stability of Bubbling Flows
The occurrence of swarms of small bubbles in a variety of industrial systems
enhances their performance. However, the effects that size polydispersity may
produce on the stability of kinematic waves, the gain factor, mean bubble
velocity, kinematic and dynamic wave velocities is, to our knowledge, not yet
well established. We found that size polydispersity enhances the stability of a
bubble column by a factor of about 23% as a function of frequency and for a
particular type of bubble column. In this way our model predicts effects that
might be verified experimentally but this, however, remain to be assessed. Our
results reinforce the point of view advocated in this work in the sense that a
description of a bubble column based on the concept of randomness of a bubble
cloud and average properties of the fluid motion, may be a useful approach that

New flaring of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 1365
We have studied a highly variable ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in the
Fornax galaxy NGC 1365, with a series of 12 Chandra and XMM-Newton observations
between 2002 and 2006. In 2006 April, the source peaked at a luminosity ~ 3 x
10^{40} erg/s in the 0.3-10 keV band (similar to the maximum luminosity found
by ASCA in 1995), and declined on an e-folding timescale ~ 3 days. The X-ray
spectrum is always dominated by a broad power-law-like component. When the
source is seen at X-ray luminosities ~ 10^{40} erg/s, an additional soft
thermal component (which we interpret as emission from the accretion disk)
contributes ~ 1/4 of the X-ray flux; when the luminosity is higher, ~ 3 x
10^{40} erg/s, the thermal component is not detected and must contribute < 10%
of the flux. At the beginning of the decline, ionized absorption is detected
around 0.5-2 keV; it is a possible signature of a massive outflow. The
power-law is always hard, with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.7 (and even flatter at
times), as is generally the case with bright ULXs. We speculate that this
source and perhaps most other bright ULXs are in a high/hard state: as the
accretion rate increases well above the Eddington limit, more and more power is
extracted from the inner region of the inflow through non-radiative channels,
and is used to power a Comptonizing corona, jet or wind. The observed thermal
component comes from the standard outer disk; the transition radius between
outer standard disk and Comptonizing inner region moves further out and to
lower disk temperatures as the accretion rate increases. This produces the
observed appearance of a large, cool disk. Based on X-ray luminosity and
spectral arguments, we suggest that this accreting black hole has a likely mass
~ 50-150 Msun (even without accounting for possible beaming).Comment: 14 pages, to appear in MNRA
Mesoscopic Theory of Critical Fluctuations in Isolated Granular Gases
Fluctuating hydrodynamics is used to describe the total energy fluctuations
of a freely evolving gas of inelastic hard spheres near the threshold of the
clustering instability. They are shown to be governed by vorticity fluctuations
only, that also lead to a renormalization of the average total energy. The
theory predicts a power-law divergent behavior of the scaled second moment of
the fluctuations, and a scaling property of their probability distribution,
both in agreement with simulations results. A more quantitative comparison
between theory and simulation for the critical amplitudes and the form of the
scaling function is also carried out
