    A Therapeutic and Diagnostic Dilemma: Granular Cell Tumor of the Breast

    Six to eight percent of granular cell tumors are seen in the breast. Although mostly benign, they rarely have malignant features clinically and radiologically reminding of breast cancer. This may lead to a potential misdiagnosis of breast carcinoma and overtreatment of patients. The final diagnosis is made by immunohistochemical examination.     The relationship of surface roughness and wettability of 316L stainless steel implants with plastic deformation mechanisms

    The wettability of the implant plays significant role in successful tissue-implant integration and shows strong dependence on the surface topography of the material. Recent studies showed that the plastic deformation mechanisms can improve cell response, and increase surface roughness and energy. In order to understand the effect of these mechanisms on wettability, 316L stainless steel samples were subjected to tensile test and deformed up to 15% to 35% of strain levels. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) presented approximately 22-fold greater average surface roughness on the 35% deformed sample compared to undeformed one. On the other hand, sessile drop test showed contact angle decrease from 82 degrees to 52 degrees as the deformation increased. This finding is significant since much higher contact angle value at similar surface roughness was presented in the literature. This demonstrates that the plastic deformation mechanisms can play significant role in enhancing the surface wettability without a need for a surface treatment technique. Hence, through the activation of these mechanisms, wettability and surface energy of the implant materials could be further increased which would result with enhanced cell response and lessened post-surgical complications.     Prevalence of cervical cytological abnormalities in Turkey

    Objective: To evaluate retrospectively the prevalence of cervical cytological abnormalities in patient records obtained from healthcare centers in Turkey. Method: Demographic characteristics and data on cervical cytological abnormalities were evaluated from patients who underwent flap tests in healthcare centers in 2007. Results: Data were collected from 33 healthcare centers totaling 140 334 patients. Overall, the prevalence of cervical cytological abnormalities was 1.8%; the prevalence of ASCUS, ASC-H, LSIL, HSIL, and AGC was 1.07%, 0.07%, 0.3%, 0.17%, and 0.08%, respectively. The prevalence of preinvasive cervical neoplasia was 1.7% and the prevalence of cytologically diagnosed invasive neoplasia was 0.06%. Conclusion: The abnormal cervical cytological prevalence rate in Turkey is lower than in Europe and North America. This might be due to sociocultural differences, lack of population-based screening programs, or a lower HPV prevalence rate in Turkey
