    Safely dissolvable and healable active packaging films based on alginate and pectin

    Extensive usage of long-lasting petroleum based plastics for short-lived application such as packaging has raised concerns regarding their role in environmental pollution. In this research, we have developed active, healable, and safely dissolvable alginate-pectin based biocomposites that have potential applications in food packaging. The morphological study revealed the rough surface of these biocomposite films. Tensile properties indicated that the fabricated samples have mechanical properties in the range of commercially available packaging films while possessing excellent healing effciency. Biocomposite films exhibited higher hydrophobicity properties compared to neat alginate films. Thermal analysis indicated that crosslinked biocomposite samples possess higher thermal stability in temperatures below 120 °C, while antibacterial analysis against E. coli and S. aureus revealed the antibacterial properties of the prepared samples against different bacteria. The fabricated biodegradable multi-functional biocomposite films possess various imperative properties, making them ideal for utilization as packaging material

    Sandpiles on multiplex networks

    We introduce the sandpile model on multiplex networks with more than one type of edge and investigate its scaling and dynamical behaviors. We find that the introduction of multiplexity does not alter the scaling behavior of avalanche dynamics; the system is critical with an asymptotic power-law avalanche size distribution with an exponent τ=3/2\tau = 3/2 on duplex random networks. The detailed cascade dynamics, however, is affected by the multiplex coupling. For example, higher-degree nodes such as hubs in scale-free networks fail more often in the multiplex dynamics than in the simplex network counterpart in which different types of edges are simply aggregated. Our results suggest that multiplex modeling would be necessary in order to gain a better understanding of cascading failure phenomena of real-world multiplex complex systems, such as the global economic crisis.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Waiting time dynamics of priority-queue networks

    We study the dynamics of priority-queue networks, generalizations of the binary interacting priority queue model introduced by Oliveira and Vazquez [Physica A {\bf 388}, 187 (2009)]. We found that the original AND-type protocol for interacting tasks is not scalable for the queue networks with loops because the dynamics becomes frozen due to the priority conflicts. We then consider a scalable interaction protocol, an OR-type one, and examine the effects of the network topology and the number of queues on the waiting time distributions of the priority-queue networks, finding that they exhibit power-law tails in all cases considered, yet with model-dependent power-law exponents. We also show that the synchronicity in task executions, giving rise to priority conflicts in the priority-queue networks, is a relevant factor in the queue dynamics that can change the power-law exponent of the waiting time distribution.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, minor changes, final published versio

    Effect of disbonds on the fatigue endurance of composite scarf joints

    The certification of scarf repairs requires that the repair is capable of handling flight loads in the presence of disbonds. This paper presents a study of the fatigue disbond growth behaviour of scarf joints. By determining the strain energy release rates of a disbond in a scarf joint subjected to a unit load, a predictive model based on linear elastic fracture mechanics is presented, which is shown to correlate well with experimental results. This method offers a promising technique for predicting the fatigue life of composite scarf joints with disbonds

    Effects of bondline flaws on the damage tolerance of composite scarf joints

    Scarf repairs to aircraft structures need to sustain design ultimate load in the presence of flaws due to manufacturing and impact by foreign objects, in order to demonstrate compliance with airworthiness regulations. This paper presents an investigation into the effect of disbonds on the load-carrying capacity of adhesively bonded scarf joints. Experiments were conducted on scarf joints containing disbonds of varying lengths. The results showed that the load-carrying capacity of scarf joints decreases with the size of the bondline flaw at a faster rate than the reduction in the effective bond area. Fractographic analysis showed that the fracture occurred in the composite matrix adjacent to the adhesive-composite interface, at a distance equal to a small fraction of ply thickness. Computational analyses using the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT) and the cohesive zone model (CZM) confirmed these experimental observations: model predictions using composite material properties were in better correlation with experimental results than those using adhesive properties. Furthermore, CZM is capable of predicting the effects of flaws of all sized being considered, while the VCCT model is only applicable to joints containing flaws greater than a certain size

    Probing Spin-Charge Relation by Magnetoconductance in One-Dimensional Polymer Nanofibers

    Polymer nanofibers are one-dimensional organic hydrocarbon systems containing conducting polymers where the non-linear local excitations such as solitons, polarons and bipolarons formed by the electron-phonon interaction were predicted. Magnetoconductance (MC) can simultaneously probe both the spin and charge of these mobile species and identify the effects of electron-electron interactions on these nonlinear excitations. Here we report our observations of a qualitatively different MC in polyacetylene (PA) and in polyaniline (PANI) and polythiophene (PT) nanofibers. In PA the MC is essentially zero, but it is present in PANI and PT. The universal scaling behavior and the zero (finite) MC in PA (PANI and PT) nanofibers provide evidence of Coulomb interactions between spinless charged solitons (interacting polarons which carry both spin and charge)

    Integrating guanxi into technology acceptance: an empirical investigation of WeChat

    Social influence is an important research topic in the technology acceptance literature, in particular for social media. Prior empirical studies have for the most part employed social influence theory to investigate user intentions to continue with social media, while culture driven theories have been neglected. Rather than using social influence theory, we introduced guanxi theory to explore how guanxi social mechanisms (or processes) influence Chinese users’ continuance intentions in WeChat. Specifically, we developed a model that examines the role of guanxi as manifested by renqing, mianzi and ganqing in perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment and continuance intention in WeChat. A survey research method was adopted to test the proposed hypotheses. This study found that ganqing has a positive impact on perceived usefulness and continuance intention. Mianzi exerts a negative effect on continuance intention but exhibits a positive effect on perceived usefulness. Renqing was found to have no significant impact on perceived usefulness and continuance intention. Our study advances the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by introducing guanxi-based constructs in a Chinese mobile social-messaging application context. Our study also offers alternative insights on guanxi-based social influence processes in the Chinese technology acceptance literature
