Competitive effects between stationary chemical reaction centres: a theory based on off-center monopoles.
The subject of this paper is competitive effects between multiple reaction sinks. A theory based on off-center monopoles is developed for the steady-state diffusion equation and for the convection-diffusion equation with a constant flow field. The dipolar approximation for the diffusion equation with two equal reaction centres is compared with the exact solution. The former turns out to be remarkably accurate, even for two touching spheres. Numerical evidence is presented to show that the same holds for larger clusters (with more than two spheres). The theory is extended to the convection-diffusion equation with a constant flow field. As one increases the convective velocity, the competitive effects between the reactive centres gradually become less significant. This is demonstrated for a number of cluster configurations. At high flow velocities, the current methodology breaks down. Fixing this problem will be the subject of future research. The current method is useful as an easy-to-use tool for the calibration of other more complicated models in mass and/or heat transfer
Surface composition and taxonomic classification of a group of near-Earth and Mars-crossing asteroids
In the past, constraining the surface composition of near-Earth asteroids
(NEAs) has been difficult due to the lack of high quality near-IR spectral data
(0.7-2.5 microns) that contain mineralogically diagnostic absorption bands.
Here we present visible (0.43-0.95 microns) and near-infrared (0.7-2.5 microns)
spectra of nine NEAs and five Mars-crossing asteroids (MCs). The studied NEAs
are: 4055 Magellan, 19764 (2000 NF5), 89830 (2002 CE), 138404 (2000 HA24),
143381 (2003 BC21), 159609 (2002 AQ3), 164121 (2003 YT1), 241662 (2000 KO44)
and 2007 ML13. The studied MCs are: 1656 Suomi, 2577 Litva, 5407 (1992 AX),
22449 Ottijeff and 47035 (1998 WS). The observations were conducted with the
NTT at La Silla, Chile, the 2.2 m telescope at Calar Alto, Spain, and the IRTF
on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i. The taxonomic classification (Bus system) of asteroids
showed that all observed MC asteroids belong to the S-complex, including the S,
Sr and Sl classes. Seven of the NEAs belong to the S-complex, including the S,
Sa, Sk and Sl classes, and two NEAs were classified as V-types. The
classification of the NEA 164121 (2003 YT1) as a V-type was made on the basis
of its near-infrared spectrum since no visible spectrum is available for this
asteroid. A mineralogical analysis was performed on six of the asteroids (those
for which near-IR spectra were obtained or previously available). We found that
three asteroids (241662 (2000 KO44), 19764 (2000 NF5), 138404 (2000 HA24)) have
mafic silicate compositions consistent with ordinary chondrites, while three
others (4055 Magellan, 164121 (2003 YT1), 5407 (1992 AX)) are
pyroxene-dominated basaltic achondrite assemblages. In the case of 5407 (1992
AX) we found that its basaltic surface composition contrasts its taxonomic

How Much Do Banks Use Credit Derivatives to Reduce Risk?
This paper examines the use of credit derivatives by US bank holding companies from 1999 to 2003 with assets in excess of one billion dollars. Using the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Bank Holding Company Database, we find that in 2003 only 19 large banks out of 345 use credit derivatives. Though few banks use credit derivatives, the assets of these banks represent on average two thirds of the assets of bank holding companies with assets in excess of $1 billion. Few banks are net buyers of credit protection and disclose using credit derivatives to hedge loans. Banks are more likely to be net protection buyers if they engage in asset securitization, originate foreign loans, and have lower capital ratios. The likelihood of a bank being a net protection buyer is positively related to the percentage of commercial and industrial loans in a bank's loan portfolio and negatively or not related to other types of bank loans. The use of credit derivatives by banks is limited because adverse selection and moral hazard problems make the market for credit derivatives illiquid for the typical credit exposures of banks.
TRIDENT: an Infrared Differential Imaging Camera Optimized for the Detection of Methanated Substellar Companions
A near-infrared camera in use at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT)
and at the 1.6-m telescope of the Observatoire du Mont-Megantic is described.
The camera is based on a Hawaii-1 1024x1024 HgCdTe array detector. Its main
feature is to acquire three simultaneous images at three wavelengths across the
methane absorption bandhead at 1.6 microns, enabling, in theory, an accurate
subtraction of the stellar point spread function (PSF) and the detection of
faint close methanated companions. The instrument has no coronagraph and
features fast data acquisition, yielding high observing efficiency on bright
stars. The performance of the instrument is described, and it is illustrated by
laboratory tests and CFHT observations of the nearby stars GL526, Ups And and
Chi And. TRIDENT can detect (6 sigma) a methanated companion with delta H = 9.5
at 0.5" separation from the star in one hour of observing time. Non-common path
aberrations and amplitude modulation differences between the three optical
paths are likely to be the limiting factors preventing further PSF attenuation.
Instrument rotation and reference star subtraction improve the detection limit
by a factor of 2 and 4 respectively. A PSF noise attenuation model is presented
to estimate the non-common path wavefront difference effect on PSF subtraction

Negative refractive index in coaxial plasmon waveguides
We theoretically show that coaxial waveguides composed of a metallic core, surrounded by a dielectric cylinder and clad by a metal outer layer exhibit negative refractive index modes over a broad spectral range in the visible. For narrow dielectric gaps (10 nm GaP embedded in Ag) a figure-of-merit of 18 can be achieved at λ_0 = 460 nm. For larger dielectric gaps the negative index spectral range extends well below the surface plasmon resonance frequency. By fine-tuning the coaxial geometry the special case of n = −1 at a figure-of-merit of 5, or n = 0 for a decay length of 500 nm can be achieved
The role of twins in computing planar supports of hypergraphs
A support or realization of a hypergraph is a graph on the same
vertex as such that for each hyperedge of it holds that its vertices
induce a connected subgraph of . The NP-hard problem of finding a planar}
support has applications in hypergraph drawing and network design. Previous
algorithms for the problem assume that twins}---pairs of vertices that are in
precisely the same hyperedges---can safely be removed from the input
hypergraph. We prove that this assumption is generally wrong, yet that the
number of twins necessary for a hypergraph to have a planar support only
depends on its number of hyperedges. We give an explicit upper bound on the
number of twins necessary for a hypergraph with hyperedges to have an
-outerplanar support, which depends only on and . Since all
additional twins can be safely removed, we obtain a linear-time algorithm for
computing -outerplanar supports for hypergraphs with hyperedges if
and are constant; in other words, the problem is fixed-parameter
linear-time solvable with respect to the parameters and
Effect of Image Forces on Polyelectrolyte Adsorption at a Charged Surface
The adsorption of flexible and highly charged polyelectrolytes onto
oppositely charged planar surfaces is investigated by means of Monte Carlo
simulations. The effect of image forces stemming from the dielectric
discontinuity at the substrate interface is considered. The influence, at fixed
polyelectrolyte volume fraction, of chain length and surface-charge density is
also considered. A detailed structural study, including monomer and fluid
charge distributions, is provided. It is demonstrated that image forces can
considerably reduce the degree of polyelectrolyte adsorption and concomitantly

Weakly-supervised localization of diabetic retinopathy lesions in retinal fundus images
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) show impressive performance for image
classification and detection, extending heavily to the medical image domain.
Nevertheless, medical experts are sceptical in these predictions as the
nonlinear multilayer structure resulting in a classification outcome is not
directly graspable. Recently, approaches have been shown which help the user to
understand the discriminative regions within an image which are decisive for
the CNN to conclude to a certain class. Although these approaches could help to
build trust in the CNNs predictions, they are only slightly shown to work with
medical image data which often poses a challenge as the decision for a class
relies on different lesion areas scattered around the entire image. Using the
DiaretDB1 dataset, we show that on retina images different lesion areas
fundamental for diabetic retinopathy are detected on an image level with high
accuracy, comparable or exceeding supervised methods. On lesion level, we
achieve few false positives with high sensitivity, though, the network is
solely trained on image-level labels which do not include information about
existing lesions. Classifying between diseased and healthy images, we achieve
