    Hydrogeochemical Assessment of Groundwater of Taluka Chachro, Thar Parker, district, Sindh, Pakistan

    The study was conducted to evaluate the hydrogeochemistry of groundwater. Twenty-six groundwater samples were analysed for the groundwater quality of Chachro Taluka. The EC and TDS contents in most of the water samples were above WHO (2011) recommended limits. Almost all water samples collected from dugwells located in the study area have elevated concentrations of Na and Cl exceeding the WHO guidelines. Results of Ca, and Mg show that 92% and 96% of groundwater samples were within the prescribed limit respectively. Whereas, HCO3, SO4, and NO3 contnets of 88%, 77%, and 69% respectively are also above the guidelines. Statistical results revealed a dominating trend among the cations of Na+>Ca+2>Mg+2>K+ and anions occur in the order of abundance, as Cl->HCO3->SO4 ->NO3, respectively. The water quality index (WQI) shows that 15% groundwater samples belong to poor category, and 35% water samples were found belonging to very poor category.While, remaining 50% wells were found unsuitable for drinking purpos

    A Computational Cognitive Model Integrating Different Emotion Regulation Strategies

    AbstractIn this paper a cognitive model is introduced which integrates a model for emotion generation with models for three different emotion regulation strategies. Given a stressful situation, humans often apply multiple emotion regulation strategies. The presented computational model has been designed based on principles from recent neurological theories based on brain imaging, and psychological and emotion regulation theories. More specifically, the model involves emotion generation and integrates models for the emotion regulation strategies reappraisal, expressive suppression, and situation modification. The model was designed as a dynamical system. Simulation experiments are reported showing the role of the emotion regulation strategies. The simulation results show how a potential stressful situation in principle could lead to emotional strain and how this can be avoided by applying the emotion regulation strategies decreasing the stressful effects

    Multimodality Treatment of Craniopharyngioma: Aspiration of Cystic Contents and Placement of Ommaya Reservoir Stereotactically Followed by Gamma Knife Radiosurgery – Single Center Study of 81 Cases

    Objective:  The objective of this present study was to assess the accuracy, result, and safety measures of stereotactic biopsy. The study was conducted at the Neurospinal & Cancer Care Institute Karachi. Material and Methods:  After the approval from the ethical hospital committee, the study was conducted on 34 patients, in which 9 (26.4%) were females, and 25 (73.5%) were males. 34 consecutive patients with biopsy inclusion deep seated lesion, mid line pathology, eloquent area and operated surgery, previous radiation treatment were excluded, and after that, the biopsy report based surgery or radiotherapy treatment was decided. Result:  The biopsy underwent histopathological diagnosis proving Astrocytoma in 7 (20.5%) patients out of which four were in the Eloquent area, tuberculosis diagnosed in 5 (14.7%) patient, Oligodendroglioma diagnosed in 3 (8.8%) patients, metastasis in 5 (14.7%), Abscess in 4 (11.7%) patient which was aspirated to maximum and sent for culture, Malignant tumor (grade 3 & 4) 5 (14.7%), Lymphoma in 2 (5.8%) patient both were given radiation therapy Tumor necrosis 1 (2.9%) case,  and No tissue obtained in 2 (5.8%) which was repeated later. No major complication or side effects were observed in the patient. Conclusion:  Stereotactic Framed biopsy is safe and accurate and can be used in deep seated lesions with high success rate, minimal complication and decrease surgical morbidity for patients, and it is comparable to updated method

    Groundwater Quality Assessment for Drinking Purpose of Taluka Chachro, Thar Desert, Pakistan; Using Water Quality Indices, and Geospatial Techniques

    Groundwater quality of taluka Chachro was investigated by analyzing thirty-two groundwater samples for drinking purpose. Multivariate statistical approaches with GIS interpolations (IDW) were applied for the identification of significant geochemical processes governing the groundwater quality.. Results showed the concentrations of physiochemical parameter in the study area exceeded the prescribed level of WHO guidelines. The EC and TDS varied from 2593-18950 µS/cm and 1659-12128 mg/l, respectively. The Ca, Mg, Na, and K range from 36-288, 17-272, 420-3280, and 9.5-101 mg/l, respectively. While, Cl, HCO3, SO4, and NO3 varied from 539-5738, 210-1150, 79-870, and 6.66-17.13 mg/l respectively. The mean values of EC, TDS, Na, Cl, HCO3, SO4, and NO3 were higher than the prescribed level of WHO 2011. Higher concentrations above the acceptable limits were recorded for K 96.15%, SO488.46%, and HCO3 82.16% of analysed samples. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that the input of natural processes have influenced groundwater quality which resulted in changing the groundwater chemistry of taluka Chachro. The results revealed the dominant trend among the cations was Na>Ca>Mg>K while among the anions it was Cl>HCO3>SO4. Based on the drinking water quality index 50% were unsuitable for drinking

    Assessment of Climate Driven Changes in Flow Series of Alpine Basin: A Case Study of Danube River Basin

    This study was carried out in order to analyze the climate change driven influence on mean monthly flow series of Danube River and its tributaries during the last century. The study confirms some signs of climate driven alterations in monthly river flow series along with change in flow seasonality during the last century. In spite of this, man-made interference in the basin like i.e. groundwater extraction, irrigation, river regulation, land use alteration and urbanization, has significantly changed Danube flow regime in most areas of the catchment. The analysis of Achleiten station demonstrates that average annual flow regime is a little bit increased. Major increase is observed in winter and autumn months and decrease in summer months. These seasonal alterations clearly signal a future glimpse of reduced water availability in alpine basins. This will mainly occur due to the change in the form of precipitation in winter, from snow to rain and the consequent less snow accumulation, and the early melt of snow storage, less precipitation and high evaporation rate in summer

    AbstractThis paper addresses the role of emotion regulation in a social context by means of a computational social agent model. The model integrates three different phenomena namely emotion regulation, emotion contagion, and emotion-related valuing, in order to analyse the role of emotion regulation in socially affected decision making. The work presented in this paper is illustrated for the interaction between two persons, simulated through agent-based modelling methods. Simulation experiments for different kinds of parameter settings help to understand the underlying mechanism of socially affected decision making and how these decisions can be affected by regulating the emotions involved. Based on the introduced model an ambient intelligent system can be designed to monitor and support a person, for example, to adopt a healthy lifestyle

    Engaging in sufficient physical activity has several beneficial effects on physical and mental health. Still, a large proportion of the Western population doesn't meet the guidelines of being moderately to vigorously active for a minimum of 30 minutes on at least five days a week. Mobile technology provides possibilities for personalized coaching systems, and the results of existing mobile interventions look promising. Here, the authors present a mobile system that goes beyond existing (mobile) physical activity interventions. The approach combines theory and evidence-based behavior-change techniques with a model-based reasoning system, to provide the right support and strategies at the right time for obtaining a physically active lifestyle
