A Framework for the Landscape
It seems likely that string theory has a landscape of vacua that includes
very many metastable de Sitter spaces. However, as emphasized by Banks, Dine
and Gorbatov, no current framework exists for examining these metastable vacua
in string theory. In this paper we attempt to correct this situation by
introducing an eternally inflating background in which the entire collection of
accelerating cosmologies is present as intermediate states. The background is a
classical solution which consists of a bubble of zero cosmological constant
inside de Sitter space, separated by a domain wall. At early and late times the
flat space region becomes infinitely big, so an S-matrix can be defined.
Quantum mechanically, the system can tunnel to an intermediate state which is
pure de Sitter space. We present evidence that a string theory S-matrix makes
sense in this background and contains metastable de Sitter space as an

The reported use and effectiveness of Hypericum (St Johnâs wort) on affective symptoms in a depression self-help group
A recent meta-analysis suggested that Hypericum
perforatum (St Johnâs wort) is an effective
treatment for mild to moderate depression and
may have a superior side-effect profile to some
antidepressant drugs. The aim of this study was to
assess the use of herbal remedies in treating
depressive and anxiety symptoms, as reported by
members of the UK self-help organization
Depression Alliance using self-completed
questionnaires. More than 50% of the 452
respondents reported using Hypericum, onequarter
of whom also reported concurrent use of
traditional antidepressants. Most of the sample
reported sufficient symptoms for warranting a
diagnosis of major depression, with the majority
also describing symptoms suggestive of co-morbid
psychiatric conditions. One-half of the Hypericum
users experienced symptom improvement, which
for most occurred within the first 4 weeks of use.
Response was better for those with mild as
compared to severe symptoms and poorer for
those taking Hypericum alongside other
antidepressants. The responders were generally
older than non-responders. Adverse effects were
reported by one-quarter of users and were mostly
psychological in nature. This retrospective survey
indicated that use of herbal remedies was
common in this population. Although often helpful
in relieving symptoms, particularly in those with
mild depression, there is a risk of adverse events
and drug interaction
MODERATION OF LOWER LIMB MUSCULAR ACTIVITY DURING JUMP LANDING BY THE APPLICATION OF ANKLE TAPING
Ground reaction forces were measured using a Kistler force platform when 8 female subjects, wearing their own shoes, landed as they received a netball chest pass. Simultaneously electromyography recordings were made of three ankle muscles. The peak impact (total 2.3 BW; vertical 2.2 BW) and landing (total 1.8 BW; vertical 1.8 BW) forces were similar whether the ankle was taped or not (p>0.05). Statistical analysis of the electromyography data indicated that, for the subject group as a whole, the peak muscular activity of the gastrocnemius medius (p=0.031), tibialis anterior (p=0.018) and peroneus longus (p=0.019) muscles was significantly reduced during landing when the ankle was taped using zinc oxide tape
High Resolution CO and H2 Molecular Line Imaging of a Cometary Globule in the Helix Nebula
We report high resolution imaging of a prominent cometary globule in the
Helix nebula in the CO J=1-0 (2.6 mm) and H2 v=1-0 S(1) (2.12 micron) lines.
The observations confirm that globules consist of dense condensations of
molecular gas embedded in the ionized nebula. The head of the globule is seen
as a peak in the CO emission with an extremely narrow line width (0.5 km/s) and
is outlined by a limb-brightened surface of H2 emission facing the central star
and lying within the photo-ionized halo. The emission from both molecular
species extends into the tail region. The presence of this extended molecular
emission provides new constraints on the structure of the tails, and on the

Renormalized Effective QCD Hamiltonian: Gluonic Sector
Extending previous QCD Hamiltonian studies, we present a new renormalization
procedure which generates an effective Hamiltonian for the gluon sector. The
formulation is in the Coulomb gauge where the QCD Hamiltonian is renormalizable
and the Gribov problem can be resolved. We utilize elements of the Glazek and
Wilson regularization method but now introduce a continuous cut-off procedure
which eliminates non-local counterterms. The effective Hamiltonian is then
derived to second order in the strong coupling constant. The resulting
renormalized Hamiltonian provides a realistic starting point for approximate
many-body calculations of hadronic properties for systems with explicit gluon

Similarity Renormalization, Hamiltonian Flow Equations, and Dyson's Intermediate Representation
A general framework is presented for the renormalization of Hamiltonians via
a similarity transformation. Divergences in the similarity flow equations may
be handled with dimensional regularization in this approach, and the resulting
effective Hamiltonian is finite since states well-separated in energy are
uncoupled. Specific schemes developed several years ago by Glazek and Wilson
and contemporaneously by Wegner correspond to particular choices within this
framework, and the relative merits of such choices are discussed from this
vantage point. It is shown that a scheme for the transformation of Hamiltonians
introduced by Dyson in the early 1950's also corresponds to a particular choice
within the similarity renormalization framework, and it is argued that Dyson's
scheme is preferable to the others for ease of computation. As an example, it
is shown how a logarithmically confining potential arises simply at second
order in light-front QCD within Dyson's scheme, a result found previously for
other similarity renormalization schemes. Steps toward higher order and
nonperturbative calculations are outlined. In particular, a set of equations

Action research in physical education: focusing beyond myself through cooperative learning
This paper reports on the pedagogical changes that I experienced as a teacher engaged in an action research project in which I designed and implemented an indirect, developmentally appropriate and childâcentred approach to my teaching. There have been repeated calls to expunge â or at least rationalise â the use of traditional, teacherâled practice in physical education. Yet despite the advocacy of many leading academics there is little evidence that such a change of approach is occurring. In my role as teacherâasâresearcher I sought to implement a new pedagogical approach, in the form of cooperative learning, and bring about a positive change in the form of enhanced pupil learning. Data collection included a reflective journal, postâteaching reflective analysis, pupil questionnaires, student interviews, document analysis, and nonâparticipant observations. The research team analysed the data using inductive analysis and constant comparison. Six themes emerged from the data: teaching and learning, reflections on cooperation, performance, time, teacher change, and social interaction. The paper argues that cooperative learning allowed me to place social and academic learning goals on an even footing, which in turn placed a focus on pupilsâ understanding and improvement of skills in athletics alongside their interpersonal development
Relativistic Dyson Rings and Their Black Hole Limit
In this Letter we investigate uniformly rotating, homogeneous and
axisymmetric relativistic fluid bodies with a toroidal shape. The corresponding
field equations are solved by means of a multi-domain spectral method, which
yields highly accurate numerical solutions. For a prescribed, sufficiently
large ratio of inner to outer coordinate radius, the toroids exhibit a
continuous transition to the extreme Kerr black hole. Otherwise, the most
relativistic configuration rotates at the mass-shedding limit. For a given
mass-density, there seems to be no bound to the gravitational mass as one

Traditional psycholinguistic approaches to metalinguistic awareness in L1 learners elicit responses containing metalanguage that demonstrates metalinguistic awareness
of pre-determined aspects of language knowledge. This paper, which takes a more ethnographic approach, demonstrates how pupils are able to engage their own focus of metalanguage when reflecting on their everyday learning activities involving written language. What is equally significant is what their metalanguage choices reveal about
their understanding and application of written language concepts
