A socio-constructive approach to the training of language practitioners at the University of the Free State
Published ArticleThis paper describes the training of language practitioners at the University of
the Free State in the light of recent developments in Translation Studies,
namely the tendency of internationalising ideas about translation, as well as
the enlarging of Western Translation Theory by integrating non-Western
thought about translation. Starting from earlier ideas of translation training, the
move towards socio-constructive approach as proposed by Kiraly (2000) is
described. It is indicated how the socio-constructive approach can benefit the
training of language practitioners by empowering the learner to act
responsibly, autonomously and competently. The socio-constructive
approach provides not only an epistemological basis for the development of
knowledge-building communities, but also a variety of tools that can be used
to promote and pursue learning in such communities
An overview of pharmacotherapy-induced ototoxicity
This article provides an overview of ototoxic medication, as well as different pharmacological and audiological monitoring strategies. Although ototoxic medications play an important role in modern medicine, they also have the capacity to do great harm and lead to significant morbidity. Physicians have to be aware of the potential effects of medication in order to identify patients who are at increased risk of developing ototoxicity. Precaution should be taken to prevent any auditory impairment that might occur through appropriate administration and monitoring. Although some otoprotective substances have been used successfully in certain studies, further trials must be performed to assess their clinical utility. The clinical pharmacist and audiologist form an important part of the ototoxicity management healthcare team
Beyond the Brother: Radical Freedom
In his decision in Ferreira v Levin NO, Justice Ackermann - inspired by Berlin - appears to favour the negative conception of freedom. Yet at the same time Ackermann insists that 'a broad and generous interpretation of freedom does not deny or preclude the constitutionally valid, and indeed essential, role of state intervention in the economic as well as the civil and political spheres.
Negotiating the archive: Amnesty, justice and memory
This article represents an encounter between Antje Du Bois-Pedain's recent Transitional Amnesty in South Africa and Jacques Derrida's Archive Fever I argue that Du Bois-Pedain's work is magisterial in the sense that relates it to the meaning of the archive identified in Derrida's text. Taking the Derridean argument a step further I aim to illustrate that this text-as-archive reveals a glimpse of its own death drive - it is conscious of its unconscious. I argue that the death drive of the archive is here ultimately resisted/countered precisely by Du Bois-Pedain's willingness to confront the outside of the archive that is this work
Empowering marganalised culture : the institution of South African sign language at the University of the Free State
Published ArticleThis paper aims to describe the state of South African Sign Language (SASL)
at the University of the Free State (UFS). It provides background to the
development of SASL, the development of Deaf education, the teaching of
sign language and sign language interpreting at the UFS, research and
community development. SASL is one of the languages offered at the UFS.
The University has been involved with ground-breaking research to
implement a training course on all levels of tertiary education. Students can
complete a degree in sign language and also do postgraduate studies in sign
language and sign language interpreting. This article aims to indicate how
teaching of SASLas an official language empowers marginalised culture
Investigating nystagmus in patients with traumatic brain injury: A systematic review (1996 - 2016)
Background. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a health and socioeconomic concern worldwide. In patients with TBI, post-traumatic balance problems are often the result of damage to the vestibular system. Nystagmus is common in these patients, and can provide insight into the damage that has resulted from the trauma.Objective. To present a systematic overview of published literature regarding nystagmus in patients with TBI.Methods. Nine databases and platforms were searched during October 2016 for articles published between 1996 and 2016. Studies of any research design and published in English that focused on nystagmus in patients with TBI were considered for inclusion. A total of 110Â articles were screened once duplicates had been removed, and 29 full-text articles were assessed. Eleven articles were included in the quality appraisal phase (using the McMaster tool), after which 10 articles were included in this review.Results. This review describes nystagmus in 713 patients, and all articles reviewed described the type of assessment method that was used. However, the results lacked comprehensive data regarding the assessment, measurement and description of nystagmus in TBI patients, or the possible link and relationship between nystagmus and TBI.Conclusions. This systematic review indicated that: (i) there is a growing body of evidence that benign paroxysmal positional vertigo should be considered during the medical examination of all patients suffering from head trauma; (ii) all patients with TBI should undergo visual (eye movement) and vestibular examination; and (iii) future studies should include quantitative measurements of eye movements and nystagmus.
Lexicography and the translation of ‘cedars of Lebanon’ in the Septuagint
Botanical terms in the Septuagint reveal a mass of uncertain and sometimes contradictory data, owing to the translators’ inadequate and inaccurate understanding of plants. To understand the metaphorical and symbolic meaning of plants, the new approach represented by Biblical Plant Hermeneutics places the taxonomy of flora on a strong ethnological and ethnobotanical basis by studying each plant in situ and gathering indigenous knowledge about the plant and its context in the biblical text. This article applies this methodology to the translation of the Hebrew source text term אֶרֶז [cedar] in the Septuagint as κέδρος [cedar] or κέδρινος (the adjectival form of κέδρος) and its interpretation in the light of lexicography, which lead to contradictory identifications. A complexity theoretical approach is proposed to provide a solution for the various identification choices in the light of lexicography to communicate the cultural values of the Hebrew source text and its Greek translation
Virus Infections in Children in a Respiratory Intensive Care Unit during an Influenza Epidemic
The incidence and severity of virus infections in a children's respiratory intensive care unit during an influenza A epidemic were studied. Infections caused by the Port Chalmers strain of influenza A or by an adenovirus were associated with severe, often fatal, pneumonia, whereas infections caused by respiratory syncytial virus or cytomegalovirus carried a good prognosis
This two-part article is an adaptation of an LLM dissertation entitled Data protection in
South Africa: the impact of the Protection of Personal Information Act and recent international
developments submitted by A Naude, University of Pretoria, 2014.http://www.lexisnexis.co.za2016-12-31am2016Mercantile La
Data protection in South Africa : the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 in light of recent international developments (2)
It took South Africa forty years since the first enactment of international data
privacy legislation to enact its own data privacy legislation in the form of the
Protection of Personal Information Act (PPI), despite the fact that the South
African Law Reform Commission (SALRC) took the first steps towards enacting
data privacy legislation in South Africa fifteen years ago.http://www.lexisnexis.co.zaam2017Mercantile La
