Safety of the navigation in congested maritime area. the case of the Messina Strait
In the last decade a relevant expansion of traffic by sea occurred, not only on the long distances, but
also on the middle-short distances; on coastline urban areas and particularly on neighboring urban areas,
but separated by the sea, the increase of the flows often involves greater risks of accident for the
navigation (Lewison, 1978; Merrick et al., 2001; van Dorp et al., 2001). The risk of maritime accident
results particularly high for the ro-ro ships. This papers clarify some aspects concerning the concept of
risk and safety at sea dealing with some literature models. An application is proposed to the Messina
Strait context that is the crossroad of elevated flows of traffic along two directions. The navigation safety
in the Messina Strait has been analyzed with the support of a micro-simulation approach

Ectropion and Conjunctival Mass in a Patient with Primary Bilateral Conjunctival Amyloidosis
Background. Amyloidosis is a group of disorders characterized by deposition of an extracellular protein, known as amyloid, in an abnormal fibrillar form with highly characteristic histopathologic staining properties. The clinical presentation can vary from a focal, localized lesion where amyloidosis has minor clinical consequences to extensive systemic disease that can involve any organ system of the body. Ocular amyloidosis can occur as a localized lesion or as a part of a systemic disorder. Conjunctival amyloidosis is an uncommon condition that is rarely associated with systemic disease. It may be a manifestation of an immunologic disorder. Case Report. We report the case of a patient with bilateral conjunctival amyloidosis who was referred to us with the suspicion of a malignant conjunctival lesion. Examination of both eyes showed a yellow-pinkmass with prominent intrinsic vessels, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and ectropion of the left lower eyelid. Diagnosis of primary localized conjunctival amyloidosis was made based on histopathologic evaluation of incisional biopsy and negative systemic work-up. Conclusion. Ocular amyloidosis is a rare disease that is slowly progressive and has a wide variety of clinical presentations. Consequently, the clinical diagnosis is often overlooked or delayed. Definitive diagnosis is achieved through histopathologic evaluation of biopsy specimen
LASER SCANNER TECHNOLOGY, GROUND-PENETRATING RADAR AND AUGMENTED REALITY FOR THE SURVEY AND RECOVERY OF ARTISTIC, ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE
In this study, using technologies such as laser scanner and GPR it was desired to see their potential in the cultural heritage. Also with regard to the processing part we are compared the results obtained by the various commercial software and algorithms developed and implemented in Matlab. Moreover, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality allow integrating the real world with historical-artistic information, laser scanners and georadar (GPR) data and virtual objects, virtually enriching it with multimedia elements, graphic and textual information accessible through smartphones and tablets

The contradictory effect of the methoxy-substituent in palladium-catalyzed ethylene/methyl acrylate cooligomerization
Two new nonsymmetric bis(aryl-imino)acenaphthene ligands (Ar,Ar'-BIAN) and one symmetric Ar2-BIAN were studied. The three ligands share the presence of at least one methoxy group on one of the two aryl rings. These ligands were used for the synthesis of neutral and monocationic palladium(II) complexes of general formula [Pd(CH3)Cl(N-N)] and [Pd(CH3)(L)(N-N)][PF6] (N-N = Ar,Ar'-BIAN, Ar2-BIAN; L = CH3CN, dmso). Due to the nonsymmetric nature of the ligands and their coordination to palladium in a nonsymmetric chemical environment, cis and trans isomers are possible for the three series of complexes with Ar,Ar'-BIANs. Both a detailed NMR investigation in solution and the X-ray characterization in solid state point out that the trans isomer is the preferred species for the neutral derivatives, whereas for the cationic compounds a decrease in the stereoselectivity of the coordination is observed. One of the new Ar,Ar'-BIANs differs from an already reported nonsymmetric \uf061-diimine for the replacement, on one aryl ring, of a methyl group with a methoxy susbtituent, thus allowing a comparison of the structural features of the relevant complexes. The monocationic complexes were tested as precatalysts for the ethylene/methyl acrylate copolymerization under mild reaction conditions. Despite the structural similarities observed in solution with the already known precatalysts, the present compounds demonstrated a remarkable decrease in the productivity values associated to a higher affinity for the polar monomer
Spontaneous Dural Carotid-Cavernous Fistula Treated with Microcoil Insertion
This report includes a case of a 65-year-old woman presenting with a spontaneous dural carotid-cavernous fistula. Biomicroscopic examination of the anterior segment showed significant conjunctival chemosis, dilatation of the episcleral vessels, narrow anterior chamber, and a proptosis of the right eye, whereas the fellow eye was unremarkable. Retinal examination revealed an impaired arteriovenous ratio (A/V) from 1-4 to 1-2 and two extensive cotton exudates. An ultrasound scan (US) demonstrated congestion of the upper ophthalmic vein. Selective brain angiography through right femoral catheterization revealed a dural fistula of the wall of the cavernous right sinus. The patient underwent surgery on the superior ophthalmic vein and insertion of a micro-catheter in the cavernous sinus under CT guidance. Furthermore, a trans-femoral catheter was placed in the carotid artery on the same side as the fistula to allow arteriographic controls after micro coil positioning and embolization. Angiographic follow-up immediately after positioning the coils showed the occluded fistula and a regular flow circulation between the internal and the external carotid arteries. After treatment, the patient presented a complete resolution of symptoms. Conservative management is effective and safe in treating patients with carotid-cavernous fistula and mild clinical features because of a good chance of spontaneous or secondary thrombosis after arteriographic occlusion
Influence of Ni in high Fe containing recyclable Al-Si cast alloys
Research in recycling Al-alloy is necessary for a sustainable industrial development. Iron present in the recycled Al-alloys deteriorates its mechanical properties. The challenge, therefore, is to tackle the iron impurity using different methodologies. The present study focuses on a strategy by which iron containing beta phase could be destabilized with the addition of Ni. A large number of microstructural image, lattice parameter data and mechanical properties have been obtained using optical microscopy with state-of-the-art image analysis, FESEM with EDS and EBSD, XRD, Vickers microhardness and universal tensile testing. Based on these results, the present work provide necessary insight about the effect of Ni addition in the recycled Al-Si cast alloys containing as high as 2 wt% Fe. Finally, it was concluded that up to 4 wt% Ni addition could be beneficial for Al-Si alloys Si content limited to 9 wt%.H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowshi
