    Kondo Effect in Electromigrated Gold Break Junctions

    We present gate-dependent transport measurements of Kondo impurities in bare gold break junctions, generated with high yield using an electromigration process that is actively controlled. Thirty percent of measured devices show zero-bias conductance peaks. Temperature dependence suggests Kondo temperatures \~7K. The peak splitting in magnetic field is consistent with theoretical predictions for g=2, though in many devices the splitting is offset from 2guB by a fixed energy. The Kondo resonances observed here may be due to atomic-scale metallic grains formed during electromigration.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Geometry of Goodness-of-Fit Testing in High Dimensional Low Sample Size Modelling

    We introduce a new approach to goodness-of-fit testing in the high dimensional, sparse extended multinomial context. The paper takes a computational information geometric approach, extending classical higher order asymptotic theory. We show why the Wald – equivalently, the Pearson X2 and score statistics – are unworkable in this context, but that the deviance has a simple, accurate and tractable sampling distribution even for moderate sample sizes. Issues of uniformity of asymptotic approximations across model space are discussed. A variety of important applications and extensions are noted

    Transcriptome analysis reveals differential splicing events in IPF lung tissue

    Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a complex disease in which a multitude of proteins and networks are disrupted. Interrogation of the transcriptome through RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) enables the determination of genes whose differential expression is most significant in IPF, as well as the detection of alternative splicing events which are not easily observed with traditional microarray experiments. We sequenced messenger RNA from 8 IPF lung samples and 7 healthy controls on an Illumina HiSeq 2000, and found evidence for substantial differential gene expression and differential splicing. 873 genes were differentially expressed in IPF (FDR<5%), and 440 unique genes had significant differential splicing events in at least one exonic region (FDR<5%). We used qPCR to validate the differential exon usage in the second and third most significant exonic regions, in the genes COL6A3 (RNA-Seq adjusted pval = 7.18e-10) and POSTN (RNA-Seq adjusted pval = 2.06e-09), which encode the extracellular matrix proteins collagen alpha-3(VI) and periostin. The increased gene-level expression of periostin has been associated with IPF and its clinical progression, but its differential splicing has not been studied in the context of this disease. Our results suggest that alternative splicing of these and other genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of IPF. We have developed an interactive web application which allows users to explore the results of our RNA-Seq experiment, as well as those of two previously published microarray experiments, and we hope that this will serve as a resource for future investigations of gene regulation in IPF. © 2014 Nance et al

    First Measurement of the Neutron β\beta-Asymmetry with Ultracold Neutrons

    We report the first measurement of angular correlation parameters in neutron β\beta-decay using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). We utilize UCN with energies below about 200 neV, which we guide and store for 30\sim 30 s in a Cu decay volume. The μnB\vec{\mu}_n \cdot \vec{B} potential of a static 7 T field external to the decay volume provides a 420 neV potential energy barrier to the spin state parallel to the field, polarizing the UCN before they pass through an adiabatic fast passage (AFP) spin-flipper and enter a decay volume, situated within a 1 T, 2×2π2 \times 2\pi superconducting solenoidal spectrometer. We determine a value for the β\beta-asymmetry parameter A0A_0, proportional to the angular correlation between the neutron polarization and the electron momentum, of A0=0.1138±0.0051A_0 = -0.1138 \pm 0.0051.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, submitted to Phys.
