Image Processing in Road Traffic Analysis
The article presents an application of computer vision methods to traffic flow monitoring and road traffic analysis. The application is utilizing image-processing and pattern recognition methods designed and modified to the needs and constrains of road traffic analysis. These methods combined together gives functional capabilities of the system to monitor the road, to initiate automated vehicle tracking, to measure the speed, and to recognize number plates of a car. Software developed was applied in and approved with video monitoring system, based on standard CCTV cameras connected to wide area network computers
Quantum Ising model in a transverse random field: A density-matrix renormalization group analysis
The spin-1/2 quantum Ising chain in a transverse random magnetic field is
studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The system
evolves from an ordered to a paramagnetic state as the amplitude of the random
field is increased. The dependence of the magnetization on a uniform magnetic
field in the z direction and the spontaneous magnetization as a function of the
amplitude of the transverse random magnetic field are determined. The behavior
of the spin-spin correlation function both above and at criticality is studied.
The scaling laws for magnetization and correlation functions are tested against
previous numerical and renormalization-group results.Comment: 5 pages with 7 figures inside them, proper format of authors' names

Research Information Systems
This survey presents an overview and study of features and capabilities of information systems, which are suitable to support research work in all stages of it: developing of ideas, design, simulation, calculation, searching and exchanging of information, etc. It discusses a wide-spread attempts, purposes (and objectives) to integrate such systems, relying on capabilities of Internet. The role of methods like multimedia, algorithms of spatial data, data compression, telecommunication, in design and developing research information systems, are discussed too. This servey reflects main points in integration of information search and retrieval procedures with other research activities
The methodology of modelling taxi rank service
The operation of a taxi rank as a passengers’ transportation service was not researched till now by means of scientific methods. Authors of this article are suggesting the methodology for the analysis and evaluation of a taxi rank as a passengers’ transportation system, when passengers pick up a taxi at taxi ranks. According to the analysis of the collected data the assumption has been made that the number of passengers coming to a taxi rank, as well as the number of taxis arriving to take passengers at a rank are distributed by Poisson distribution law controlled by specific values of parameters. This observation enables us to consider a taxi rank as a queueing system, having behavior controlled by two parameters: the expected number of taxis arriving to the rank at a time period and the expected number of passengers picking up a taxi at a rank at the same period of time. Usually values of these parameters do not coincide what makes the modelling of a taxi rank a valuable queueing system. Theoretical considerations as well as practical formulas of this article lead us to the methodology of modelling the demand for taxis at a taxi rank. The methodology suggested enables to estimate the efficiency of taxi rank functioning from different points of view. A taxi company may evaluate the costs related to the outage time of a taxi, as well as the amount of taxis in a rank satisfying the demand of passengers for transportation
Quality of Colour Image Segmentation: the Measures
Colour image segmentation is an important tool in many applications, like robotics, computer vision and data compression. Differing highly from grey-scale images, the colour segmentation usually has more complicated and time consuming algorithms and is controlled by a larger set of parameters. The measures of quality of colour segmentation are presented in the article, enabling users to evaluate the most efficient set of parameters for a procedure of colour segmentation. The evaluation of parameters are suggested to be provided by heuristical and statistical methods, also presenting relationship of such measures
Clustering through Decision Tree Construction in Geology Received: 22.10.2001 Accepted: 31.10.2001
The article presents a tool to analyze the application of efficient algorithms of data mining, namely hierarchical clustering algorithms to be used in the analysis of geological data. It introduces a description of hierarchical clustering principles and methods for learning dependencies from geological data. The authors are using statistical formulation of algorithms to represent the most natural framework for learning from data. The geological data come from mining holes, and describe the structure of sedimental layers of vertical section of geological body. The analysis of such data is intended to give a basis for uniform description of lithological characteristics, and for the identification of them via formal methods
Age and Gender Impact on Password Hygiene
Password hygiene plays an essential part in securing systems protected with single-factor authentication. A significant fraction of security incidents happen due to weak or reused passwords. The reasons behind differences in security vulnerable behaviour between various user groups remains an active research topic. The paper aims to identify the impact of age and gender on password strength using a large password dataset. We recovered previously hashed passwords of 102,120 users from a leaked customer database of a car-sharing company. Although the measured effect size was small, males significantly had stronger passwords than females for all age groups. Males aged 26–45 were also significantly different from all other groups, and password complexity decreased with age for both genders equally. Overall, very weak password hygiene was observed, 72% of users based their password on a word or used a simple sequence of digits, and passwords of over 39% of users were found in word lists of previous leaks
Dynamics of the Electric Field in a GaAs/AlGaAs Superlattice after Femtosecond Optical Excitation: Application of Time-Resolved Spectroscopic Techniques
We apply time-resolved photocurrent and differential electroreflectance spectroscopy to study the evolution of the internal field in a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice after pulsed optical excitation at low temperature. The electric field dynamics is investigated by tracing the spectral position of the Wannier-Stark transitions as a function of delay time. We determine the electron sweep-out time, extract detailed information about the picosecond-time-scale drift of the charge carriers by comparing the measured data with the results of semi-classical self-consistent model calculations, and evaluate the two experimental techniques with respect to their ability to provide information about the carrier and field dynamics
