Electrical performance characteristics of high power converters for space power applications
The first goal of this project was to investigate various converters that would be suitable for processing electric power derived from a nuclear reactor. The implementation is indicated of a 20 kHz system that includes a source converter, a ballast converter, and a fixed frequency converter for generating the 20 kHz output. This system can be converted to dc simply by removing the fixed frequency converter. This present study emphasized the design and testing of the source and ballast converters. A push-pull current-fed (PPCF) design was selected for the source converter, and a 2.7 kW version of this was implemented using three 900 watt modules in parallel. The characteristic equation for two converters in parallel was derived, but this analysis did not yield any experimental methods for measuring relative stability. The three source modules were first tested individually and then in parallel as a 2.7 kW system. All tests proved to be satisfactory; the system was stable; efficiency and regulation were acceptable; and the system was fault tolerant. The design of a ballast-load converter, which was operated as a shunt regulator, was investigated. The proposed power circuit is suitable for use with BJTs because proportional base drive is easily implemented. A control circuit which minimizes switching frequency ripple and automatically bypasses a faulty shunt section was developed. A nonlinear state-space-averaged model of the shunt regulator was developed and shown to produce an accurate incremental (small-signal) dynamic model, even though the usual state-space-averaging assumptions were not met. The nonlinear model was also shown to be useful for large-signal dynamic simulation using PSpice
A comparative study of electric power distribution systems for spacecraft
The electric power distribution systems for spacecraft are compared concentrating on two interrelated issues: the choice between dc and high frequency ac, and the converter/inverter topology to be used at the power source. The relative merits of dc and ac distribution are discussed. Specific converter and inverter topologies are identified and analyzed in detail for the purpose of detailed comparison. Finally, specific topologies are recommended for use in dc and ac systems
Robust Optimal Risk Sharing and Risk Premia in Expanding Pools
We consider the problem of optimal risk sharing in a pool of cooperative
agents. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the certainty equivalents and
risk premia associated with the Pareto optimal risk sharing contract as the
pool expands. We first study this problem under expected utility preferences
with an objectively or subjectively given probabilistic model. Next, we develop
a robust approach by explicitly taking uncertainty about the probabilistic
model (ambiguity) into account. The resulting robust certainty equivalents and
risk premia compound risk and ambiguity aversion. We provide explicit results
on their limits and rates of convergence, induced by Pareto optimal risk
sharing in expanding pools
Mass Loss In M67 Giants: Evidence From Isochrone Fitting
We present a study of the stellar content of the open cluster M67. We have
computed new evolutionary sequences of stellar models with solar abundance that
cover all phases of evolution from the Zero-Age Main Sequence to the bright end
of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). We examine the fit between the calculated
and the observed red giant branch (RGB) in particular, and discuss factors that
most influence its quality. The distinct color gap between the RGB and the
clump giants is compared with the temperature gap between the He-burning tracks
and the computed 5 Gyr isochrone. This purely differential approach strongly
indicates that the clump giants have M \lta 0.70\msun\ , implying an amount
of mass loss ( \msun) well in excess of that found in globular
cluster stars. Observational constraints on mass loss processes favor the
interpretation that mass loss in cool low-mass giant stars increases with

Forces and atomic relaxations in the pSIC approach with ultrasoft pseudopotentials
We present the scheme that allows for efficient calculations of forces in the
framework of pseudopotential self-interaction corrected (pSIC) formulation of
the density functional theory. The scheme works with norm conserving and also
with ultrasoft pseudopotentials and has been implemented in the plane-wave
basis code {\sc quantum espresso}. We have performed tests of the internal
consistency of the derived expressions for forces considering ZnO and CeO
crystals. Further, we have performed calculations of equilibrium geometry for
LaTiO, YTiO, and LaMnO perovskites and also for Re and Mn pairs in
silicon. Comparison with standard DFT and DFT+U approaches shows that in the
cases where spurious self-interaction matters, the pSIC approach predicts
different geometry, very often closer to the experimental data.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
Parasupersymmetric Quantum Mechanics of Order 3 and a Generalized Witten Index
In this paper we generalize the Rubakov-Spiridonov parasupersymmetry algebra
to the order 3 case. We also generalize the notion of the Witten index, and we
provide a class of models satisfying our parasupersymmetry algebra. Finally, we
show that there is a correspondence between the Hamiltonian and the index in
our class of models
Exchange Rates and the Competitiveness of the US Timber Sector in a Global Economy
This paper examines the competitiveness of the US timber industry under different exchange rate policies using a dynamic optimization model of global timber markets. We assume that exchange rates affect the cost structure of harvesting and managing forests and simulate the model for baseline conditions and four additional exchange rate policies. Two policies consider a strengthening United States dollar scenario and two policies examine weak South American currencies. Recently South America has increased its share of global timber production and is shipping increasing quantities of timber to the Unites States. The results indicate that US competitiveness in the forestry sector is sensitive both to strong US compared to all other currencies can reduce harvests by 4 7% in the United States over the next 50 years, while a similar reduction in currency values in South America can reduce U.S. production by around 0.4%.
