The Jamming Transition in Granular Systems
Recent simulations have predicted that near jamming for collections of
spherical particles, there will be a discontinuous increase in the mean contact
number, Z, at a critical volume fraction, phi_c. Above phi_c, Z and the
pressure, P are predicted to increase as power laws in phi-phi_c. In
experiments using photoelastic disks we corroborate a rapid increase in Z at
phi_c and power-law behavior above phi_c for Z and P. Specifically we find
power-law increase as a function of phi-phi_c for Z-Z_c with an exponent beta
around 0.5, and for P with an exponent psi around 1.1. These exponents are in
good agreement with simulations. We also find reasonable agreement with a

Universal Robotic Gripper based on the Jamming of Granular Material
Gripping and holding of objects are key tasks for robotic manipulators. The
development of universal grippers able to pick up unfamiliar objects of widely
varying shape and surface properties remains, however, challenging. Most
current designs are based on the multi-fingered hand, but this approach
introduces hardware and software complexities. These include large numbers of
controllable joints, the need for force sensing if objects are to be handled
securely without crushing them, and the computational overhead to decide how
much stress each finger should apply and where. Here we demonstrate a
completely different approach to a universal gripper. Individual fingers are
replaced by a single mass of granular material that, when pressed onto a target
object, flows around it and conforms to its shape. Upon application of a vacuum
the granular material contracts and hardens quickly to pinch and hold the
object without requiring sensory feedback. We find that volume changes of less
than 0.5% suffice to grip objects reliably and hold them with forces exceeding
many times their weight. We show that the operating principle is the ability of
granular materials to transition between an unjammed, deformable state and a
jammed state with solid-like rigidity. We delineate three separate mechanisms,
friction, suction and interlocking, that contribute to the gripping force.
Using a simple model we relate each of them to the mechanical strength of the
jammed state. This opens up new possibilities for the design of simple, yet
highly adaptive systems that excel at fast gripping of complex objects.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Scale invariance and universality of force networks in static granular matter
Force networks form the skeleton of static granular matter. They are the key
ingredient to mechanical properties, such as stability, elasticity and sound
transmission, which are of utmost importance for civil engineering and
industrial processing. Previous studies have focused on the global structure of
external forces (the boundary condition), and on the probability distribution
of individual contact forces. The disordered spatial structure of the force
network, however, has remained elusive so far. Here we report evidence for
scale invariance of clusters of particles that interact via relatively strong
forces. We analyzed granular packings generated by molecular dynamics
simulations mimicking real granular matter; despite the visual variation, force
networks for various values of the confining pressure and other parameters have
identical scaling exponents and scaling function, and thus determine a
universality class. Remarkably, the flat ensemble of force configurations--a
simple generalization of equilibrium statistical mechanics--belongs to the same

Partial clustering prevents global crystallization in a binary 2D colloidal glass former
A mixture of two types of super-paramagnetic colloidal particles with long
range dipolar interaction is confined by gravity to a flat interface of a
hanging water droplet. The particles are observed by video microscopy and the
dipolar interaction strength is controlled via an external magnetic field. The
system is a model system to study the glass transition in 2D, and it exhibits
partial clustering of the small particles. This clustering is strongly
dependent on the relative concentration of big and small particles.
However, changing the interaction strength reveals that the clustering
does not depend on the interaction strength. The partial clustering scenario is
quantified using Minkowski functionals and partial structure factors. Evidence
that partial clustering prevents global crystallization is discussed

Priprava i evaluacija mukoadhezivnih filmova glipizida
Glipizide is mainly absorbed in the proximal areas of the gastrointestinal tract. The purpose of this study was formulation and evaluation of mucoadhesive films to prolong the stay of drug in its absorption area. Glipizide was formulated in a mucoadhesive film that could be retained in the stomach for prolonged time intervals. Polymeric films were designed with various compositions of hydroxypropyl cellulose and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400). Properties of the mucoadhesive film such as tensile strength, percentage elongation, swelling index, moisture content, pH and viscosity of polymeric dispersion, film thickness, drug concentration, uniformity and mucoadhesion in a simulated gastric environment were evaluated. In addition, percentage drug retained in stomach mucosa was estimated using a simulated dynamic stomach system as a function of time. Increase in hydroxypropyl cellulose concentration resulted in a higher tensile strength and elongation at break, while increase in concentration of PEG 400 was reflected in a decrease of tensile strength and increase of elongation at break. Glipizide/hydroxypropyl cellulose/PEG 400 (2.5:1:0.5) (GF5) was found to be the optimal composition for a novel mucoadhesive stomach formulation that showed good peelability, relatively high swelling index, moderate tensile strength, and stayed on rat stomach mucosa up to 8 h. In vivo testing of the mucoadhesive films with glipizide demonstrated a potential hypoglycemic effect.Glipizid se pretežno apsorbira u proksimalnom dijelu gastrointestinalnog trakta. Cilj rada je priprava i evaluacija mukoadhezivnih filmova s kojima bi se produljilo zadržavanje lijeka u predjelu apsorpcije. Pripravljeni su mukoadhezivni filmovi glipizida koji se produljeno zadržavaju u želucu. Polimerni filmovi sadržavali su različite količine hidroksipropil celuloze i polietilen glikola 400 (PEG 400). Evaluirana su sljedeća svojstva mukoadhezivnih filmova: čvrstoća, postotak elongacije, indeks bubrenja, sadržaj vlage, pH i viskoznost polimerne disperzije, debljina filma, koncentracija lijeka, jednolikost i mukoadhezivnost u simuliranom želučanom soku. Na dinamičkom modelu želuca određivan je i postotak lijeka koji se zadržava u sluznici želuca u ovisnosti o vremenu. Povećanjem koncentracije hidroksipropil celuloze povećavaju se čvrstoća i elongacija, dok se povećanje koncentracije PEG 400 reflektira na smanjenje čvrstoće i povećanje elongacije kod loma. Omjer glipizid/hidroksipropil celuloza/PEG 400 (2,5:1:0,5) (GF5) bio je optimalan za pripravu mukoadhezivnih formulacija, s dobrom kalavošću, relativno visokim indeksom bubrenja, umjerenom čvrstoćom te zadržavanjem u sluznici želuca štakora do 8 h. U in vivo testiranjima mukoadhesivni filmovi s glipizidom pokazali su potencijalni hipoglikemijski učinak
PTCH1+/− Dermal Fibroblasts Isolated from Healthy Skin of Gorlin Syndrome Patients Exhibit Features of Carcinoma Associated Fibroblasts
Gorlin's or nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) causes predisposition to basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the commonest cancer in adult human. Mutations in the tumor suppressor gene PTCH1 are responsible for this autosomal dominant syndrome. In NBCCS patients, as in the general population, ultraviolet exposure is a major risk factor for BCC development. However these patients also develop BCCs in sun-protected areas of the skin, suggesting the existence of other mechanisms for BCC predisposition in NBCCS patients. As increasing evidence supports the idea that the stroma influences carcinoma development, we hypothesized that NBCCS fibroblasts could facilitate BCC occurence of the patients. WT (n = 3) and NBCCS fibroblasts bearing either nonsense (n = 3) or missense (n = 3) PTCH1 mutations were cultured in dermal equivalents made of a collagen matrix and their transcriptomes were compared by whole genome microarray analyses. Strikingly, NBCCS fibroblasts over-expressed mRNAs encoding pro-tumoral factors such as Matrix Metalloproteinases 1 and 3 and tenascin C. They also over-expressed mRNA of pro-proliferative diffusible factors such as fibroblast growth factor 7 and the stromal cell-derived factor 1 alpha, known for its expression in carcinoma associated fibroblasts. These data indicate that the PTCH1+/− genotype of healthy NBCCS fibroblasts results in phenotypic traits highly reminiscent of those of BCC associated fibroblasts, a clue to the yet mysterious proneness to non photo-exposed BCCs in NBCCS patients
Evaluation of the prophylactic use of mitomycin-C to inhibit haze formation after photorefractive keratectomy in high myopia: a prospective clinical study
BACKGROUND: To study the effect of prophylactic application of mitomycin-C on haze formation in photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for high myopia. METHODS: Fifty-four eyes of 28 myopic patients were enrolled in this prospective study. All eyes were operated by PRK followed by 0.02% mitomycin-C application for two minutes and washed with 20 ml normal saline afterwards. All eyes were examined thoroughly on the first 7 days and one month after surgery; 48 eyes (88.9%) at 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Hanna grading (in the scale of 0 to 4+) was used for assessment of corneal haze. RESULTS: The mean spherical equivalent refraction (SE) was -7.08 diopters (D) ± 1.11 (SD) preoperatively. Six months after surgery, 37 eyes (77.1%) achieved an uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) of 20/20 or better, all eyes had a UCVA of 20/40 or better and 45 (93.7%) eyes had an SE within ± 1.00D. One month postoperatively, 2 eyes (3.7%) had grade 0.5+ of haze, while at 3 and 6 months after surgery no visited eye had haze at all. All eyes had a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/40 or better and there were no lost lines in BCVA by 6 months after surgery. In spatial frequencies of 6 and 12 cycles per degree contrast sensitivity had decreased immediately after PRK and it had increased 1.5 lines by the 6(th )postoperative month compared to the preoperative data. CONCLUSIONS: The results show the efficacy of mitomycin-C in preventing corneal haze after treatment of high myopia with PRK. This method- PRK + mitomycin-C – can be considered an alternative treatment for myopic patients whose corneal thicknesses are inadequate for laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). However, the results should be confirmed in longer follow-ups
Arches and contact forces in a granular pile
Assemblies of granular particles mechanically stable under their own weight
contain arches. These are structural units identified as sets of mutually
stable grains. It is generally assumed that these arches shield the weight
above them and should bear most of the stress in the system. We test such
hypothesis by studying the stress born by in-arch and out-of-arch grains. We
show that, indeed, particles in arches withstand larger stresses. In
particular, the isotropic stress tends to be larger for in-arch-grains whereas
the anisotropic component is marginally distinguishable between the two types
of particles. The contact force distributions demonstrate that an exponential
tail (compatible with the maximization of entropy under no extra constraints)
is followed only by the out-of-arch contacts. In-arch contacts seem to be
compatible with a Gaussian distribution consistent with a recently introduced
approach that takes into account constraints imposed by the local force balance
