    Get PDF
Mismanagement and recurring strikes in the Nigerian educational sector have institutionalized a legacy of intellectual poverty and criminality among youth. Unchecked persistent strikes have led to progressive deterioration in infrastructure and academic quality, leading to criminal activities among the youth. This study utilizes the concept of alternative educational backgrounds to interpret the density of crimes among youth in Nigeria. The research draws empirical evidence from Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and supports it with a field survey. The collated data were subjected to both descriptive and regression analyses. The statistical results show that neglect of education is significantly correlated with criminal and mendicant (area-boyism) behavior among youth. This paper recommends that for the nation’s education to have an impact in reducing crime there is a need to inject vibrancy into the educational system in order to encourage and enhance educational quality/quantity

The paper investigates the relationships between institutional enactments and the challenges of Nigerian commercial banks survival (1980-2006) towards policy option for realizing vision 2020. The divergence between government expectations and banks’ reality coupled with macroeconomics, and competitors’ activities could create failures in the sector. Using statistical data, the authors elucidate the impact of re-engineered interventions on banks’ survival over the period. The empirical results, among others, indicate that the high level unemployment rate in Nigeria poses a threat to banks’ survival. The statistical output also shows that government interventions could lead to a counterproductive effect on commercial banks’ strength, if not properly guided. Thus, for commercial banks to be well positioned as the nation approaches the year 2020, efforts to reduce the level of unemployment and ensure that government policies in the sub-sector are consistent and well articulated, would be rewarding

    Get PDF
The external reserves‑economy relationship argument has generated debate due to unsatisfactory theoretical and empirical consensus. This paper provides an economic assessment and empirical insight to the debate in Nigeria. Towards this, the paper used secondary data from CBN statistical bulletin (1994 ‑ 2005). The outputs generated revealed that external reserves exceeding the three months benchmark equivalent was in excess: its holding cost was high. In addition, the results suggested dual fold interpretation of the analyses: 1) holding of external reserves do promote exchange rate stability, 2) positive relationship exists between external reserves and exports; however, the relationship was not significant, hence suggesting that export was not induced significantly by the nation’s external reserves. The paper suggests that domestic production efficiency is required not really external reserve accumulation to improve macroeconomic performance

The cross-sectional survey research design was adopted and, data collected from 377 regular non-academic staff using validated and reliable copies of a questionnaire. Multiple regression analysis was applied as the inferential statistics. Results from multiple regression analysis conducted found that job-characteristics dimensions had a significant effect on employee continuance commitment [R = 0.726, F(5, 371) = 78.081, p < 0.05]. Also, task identity, task significance, and feedback had a significant positive effect on continuance commitment. On the strength of the statistical findings, it was recommended for management emphasize on task identify, significance and, feedback to enable continuance commitment of non-academic staff.
