Finding Person Relations in Image Data of the Internet Archive
The multimedia content in the World Wide Web is rapidly growing and contains
valuable information for many applications in different domains. For this
reason, the Internet Archive initiative has been gathering billions of
time-versioned web pages since the mid-nineties. However, the huge amount of
data is rarely labeled with appropriate metadata and automatic approaches are
required to enable semantic search. Normally, the textual content of the
Internet Archive is used to extract entities and their possible relations
across domains such as politics and entertainment, whereas image and video
content is usually neglected. In this paper, we introduce a system for person
recognition in image content of web news stored in the Internet Archive. Thus,
the system complements entity recognition in text and allows researchers and
analysts to track media coverage and relations of persons more precisely. Based
on a deep learning face recognition approach, we suggest a system that
automatically detects persons of interest and gathers sample material, which is
subsequently used to identify them in the image data of the Internet Archive.
We evaluate the performance of the face recognition system on an appropriate
standard benchmark dataset and demonstrate the feasibility of the approach with
two use cases
Effective Radii and Color Gradients in Radio Galaxies
We present de Vaucouleurs' effective radii in B and R bands for a sample of
Molonglo Reference Catalogue radio galaxies and a control sample of normal
galaxies. We use the ratio of the scale lengths in the two bands as an
indicator to show that the radio galaxies tend to have excess of blue color in
their inner region much more frequently than the control galaxies. We show that
the scale length ratio is a useful indicator of radial color variation even

Global Music Perspectives: Music Outside the Western Canon in Local Schools
As a class, we are designing a research project for investigating how music teachers from counties in South-Central Pennsylvania use music from outside the Western canon (i.e. world music ). We are performing a qualitative study by interviewing k-12 music teachers from school districts in South-Central Pennsylvania. Teachers may choose to participate in a focus group interview with other teachers or in one-on-one interviews. The focus group interview will not exceed two hours and the one-on-one interviews will not exceed an hour. The interviews will be guided using a questionnaire (see attached), but the conversation may deviate from these questions at the discretion of the interviewer(s). We will transcribe these interviews to extract common thematic materials and relevant information. We will also compile a literature review of relevant peer-reviewed articles and use the data from said articles to expand upon our gathered information
Perception of nonnative tonal contrasts by Mandarin-English and English-Mandarin sequential bilinguals
This study examined the role of acquisition order and crosslinguistic similarity in influencing transfer at the initial stage of perceptually acquiring a tonal third language (L3). Perception of tones in Yoruba and Thai was tested in adult sequential bilinguals representing three different first (L1) and second language (L2) backgrounds: L1 Mandarin-L2 English (MEBs), L1 English-L2 Mandarin (EMBs), and L1 English-L2 intonational/non-tonal (EIBs). MEBs outperformed EMBs and EIBs in discriminating L3 tonal contrasts in both languages, while EMBs showed a small advantage over EIBs on Yoruba. All groups showed better overall discrimination in Thai than Yoruba, but group differences were more robust in Yoruba. MEBsâ and EMBsâ poor discrimination of certain L3 contrasts was further reflected in the L3 tones being perceived as similar to the same Mandarin tone; however, EIBs, with no knowledge of Mandarin, showed many of the same similarity judgments. These findings thus suggest that L1 tonal experience has a particularly facilitative effect in L3 tone perception, but there is also a facilitative effect of L2 tonal experience. Further, crosslinguistic perceptual similarity between L1/L2 and L3 tones, as well as acoustic similarity between different L3 tones, play a significant role at this early stage of L3 tone acquisition.Published versio
Fault and magmatic interaction within Iceland's western rift over the last 9kyr
We present high-resolution 'Chirp' sub-bottom profiler data from Thingvallavatn, a lake in Iceland's western rift zone. These data are combined with stratigraphic constraints from sediment cores to show that movement on normal faults since 9 ka are temporally correlated with magmatic events, indicating that movements were controlled by episodic dyke intrusion. Sediment depo-centres and the focus of subsidence migrated westwards over 3-4 kyr towards the locus of subsequent brittle failure. We interpret this subsidence as related to dyke intrusion a few km along strike, originating from the Hengill volcanic system, which occurred prior to major dyking, faulting and subsidence within the lake at 1.9 ka
Pion parton distribution functions from lattice QCD
We report on recent results for the pion matrix element of the twist-2
operator corresponding to the average momentum of non-singlet quark densities.
For the first time finite volume effects of this matrix element are
investigated and come out to be surprisingly large. We use standard Wilson and
non-perturbatively improved clover actions in order to control better the
extrapolation to the continuum limit. Moreover, we compute, fully
non-perturbatively, the renormalization group invariant matrix element, which
allows a comparison with experimental results in a broad range of energy
scales. Finally, we discuss the remaining uncertainties, the extrapolation to

Deep LOFAR 150 MHz imaging of the Bo\"otes field: Unveiling the faint low-frequency sky
We have conducted a deep survey (with a central rms of )
with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) at 120-168 MHz of the Bo\"otes field, with
an angular resolution of , and obtained a sample of
10091 radio sources ( limit) over an area of .
The astrometry and flux scale accuracy of our source catalog is investigated.
The resolution bias, incompleteness and other systematic effects that could
affect our source counts are discussed and accounted for. The derived 150 MHz
source counts present a flattening below sub-mJy flux densities, that is in
agreement with previous results from high- and low- frequency surveys. This
flattening has been argued to be due to an increasing contribution of
star-forming galaxies and faint active galactic nuclei. Additionally, we use
our observations to evaluate the contribution of cosmic variance to the scatter
in source counts measurements. The latter is achieved by dividing our Bo\"otes
mosaic into 10 non-overlapping circular sectors, each one with an approximate
area of The counts in each sector are computed in the
same way as done for the entire mosaic. By comparing the induced scatter with
that of counts obtained from depth observations scaled to 150MHz, we find that
the scatter due to cosmic variance is larger than the Poissonian
errors of the source counts, and it may explain the dispersion from previously
reported depth source counts at flux densities . This work
demonstrates the feasibility of achieving deep radio imaging at low-frequencies

Energy transfer in nonlinear network models of proteins
We investigate how nonlinearity and topological disorder affect the energy
relaxation of local kicks in coarse-grained network models of proteins. We find
that nonlinearity promotes long-range, coherent transfer of substantial energy
to specific, functional sites, while depressing transfer to generic locations.
Remarkably, transfer can be mediated by the self-localization of discrete
breathers at distant locations from the kick, acting as efficient
