On Factor Universality in Symbolic Spaces
The study of factoring relations between subshifts or cellular automata is
central in symbolic dynamics. Besides, a notion of intrinsic universality for
cellular automata based on an operation of rescaling is receiving more and more
attention in the literature. In this paper, we propose to study the factoring
relation up to rescalings, and ask for the existence of universal objects for
that simulation relation. In classical simulations of a system S by a system T,
the simulation takes place on a specific subset of configurations of T
depending on S (this is the case for intrinsic universality). Our setting,
however, asks for every configurations of T to have a meaningful interpretation
in S. Despite this strong requirement, we show that there exists a cellular
automaton able to simulate any other in a large class containing arbitrarily
complex ones. We also consider the case of subshifts and, using arguments from
recursion theory, we give negative results about the existence of universal
objects in some classes
Online Popularity and Topical Interests through the Lens of Instagram
Online socio-technical systems can be studied as proxy of the real world to
investigate human behavior and social interactions at scale. Here we focus on
Instagram, a media-sharing online platform whose popularity has been rising up
to gathering hundred millions users. Instagram exhibits a mixture of features
including social structure, social tagging and media sharing. The network of
social interactions among users models various dynamics including
follower/followee relations and users' communication by means of
posts/comments. Users can upload and tag media such as photos and pictures, and
they can "like" and comment each piece of information on the platform. In this
work we investigate three major aspects on our Instagram dataset: (i) the
structural characteristics of its network of heterogeneous interactions, to
unveil the emergence of self organization and topically-induced community
structure; (ii) the dynamics of content production and consumption, to
understand how global trends and popular users emerge; (iii) the behavior of
users labeling media with tags, to determine how they devote their attention
and to explore the variety of their topical interests. Our analysis provides
clues to understand human behavior dynamics on socio-technical systems,
specifically users and content popularity, the mechanisms of users'
interactions in online environments and how collective trends emerge from

Return times, recurrence densities and entropy for actions of some discrete amenable groups
Results of Wyner and Ziv and of Ornstein and Weiss show that if one observes
the first k outputs of a finite-valued ergodic process, then the waiting time
until this block appears again is almost surely asymptotic to , where
is the entropy of the process. We examine this phenomenon when the allowed
return times are restricted to some subset of times, and generalize the results
to processes parameterized by other discrete amenable groups.
We also obtain a uniform density version of the waiting time results: For a
process on symbols, within a given realization, the density of the initial
-block within larger -blocks approaches , uniformly in ,
as tends to infinity. Again, similar results hold for processes with other

Emergency revascularization in patients with cardiogenic shock on admission: a report from the SHOCK trial and registry
Aims To determine clinical correlates and optimal treatment strategy in patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) on admission. Methods and results In SHould we emergently revascularize Occluded Coronaries in cardiogenic shocK? (SHOCK) trial and registry patients with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction (n=1053), CS on admission occurred in 26% of directly admitted patients (n=166/627). Time from myocardial infarction to CS was shorter, initial haemodynamic profile poorer, and aggressive treatment less frequent in CS on admission than in delayed CS patients. CS on admission patients constituted a smaller relative proportion (11%) of the transferred (n=48/426) when compared with the directly admitted cohort (P<0.001). In-hospital mortality was higher (75 vs. 56%; P<0.001) with more rapid death (24-h mortality 40 vs. 17%; P<0.001) in CS on admission than in delayed CS patients. Emergency revascularization reduced in-hospital mortality in CS on admission (60 vs. 82%; P=0.001) and in delayed CS patients similarly (46 vs. 62%; P<0.001; interaction P=0.25). After adjustment for clinical differences, CS on admission was an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality (P=0.008). Conclusion CS on admission patients have a worse outcome but benefit equally from emergency revascularization as delayed CS patients, emphasizing the need for rapid and direct access of CS on admission patients to facilities providing this car
Family Connect: Keeping families informed during the COVID-19 pandemic
Family Connect programs to enhance communication with families and care partners who were unable to visit their inpatient loved ones during the COVID-19 crisis. While they differed in composition, the Family Connect programs at both institutions leveraged providers who had decreased clinical activity during the pandemic. The Family Connect team became integrated with the team. At both institutions, Family Connect teams perform virtual chart review, discuss patient status and care plan with the primary provider and communicate with the patient’s designated family member or care partner daily. Conversations are documented in the electronic medical record (EMR), which allows for metric tracking and clear communication to all team members. All Family Connect providers undergo a comprehensive training program focused on workflow, communication, and EMR training. Family Connect can be tailored to the needs of specific health systems based on patient volume and staffing. The NYULH Family Connect model incorporated medical student mentorship, on-site nurse liaisons to assist patients with virtual visits with families, and a 24/7 call center for family support. The YNHHS model was separate from the YNHHS COVID-19 call center and utilized attending and trainee physicians. The program is highly portable and can be easily reinitiated if needed.

Emotional intelligence buffers the effect of physiological arousal on dishonesty
We studied the emotional processes that allow people to balance two competing desires: benefitting from dishonesty and keeping a positive self-image. We recorded physiological arousal (skin conductance and heart rate) during a computer card game in which participants could cheat and fail to report a certain card when presented on the screen to avoid losing their money. We found that higher skin conductance corresponded to lower cheating rates. Importantly, emotional intelligence regulated this effect; participants with high emotional intelligence were less affected by their physiological reactions than those with low emotional intelligence. As a result, they were more likely to profit from dishonesty. However, no interaction emerged between heart rate and emotional intelligence. We suggest that the ability to manage and control emotions can allow people to overcome the tension between doing right or wrong and license them to bend the rules
