    Conductivity of materials made of aluminum nitride and silicon nitride mixtures

    To establish the possible mechanism for conductivity in aluminum nitride a study was made of the electric conductivity of pure AlN and its mixtures with silicon nitride at different temperatures and partial pressures of nitrogen in the gas phase. The thermoelectromotive force was also measured. The experiments used polycrystalline samples of cylindrical shape 18 mm in diameter made of powders by hot pressing in graphite press molds at a temperature of 1973-2273 K and pressure 1,470,000 n/sqm. The items obtained by this method had porosity not over 5%. After pressing, the samples were machined to remove carbon from the surface, and were annealed in a stream of dry ammonia for 10 h at a temperature of 1273-1373 K. Electric conductivity was measured according to the bridge scheme on an alternating current of frequency 10 kHz. In order to guarantee close contact of the platinum electrodes with the surface of the samples, a thin layer of platinum was sprayed on them.     Gauged D=7 Supergravity on the S**1/Z_2 Orbifold

    We construct the most general couplings of a bulk seven-dimensional Yang-Mills-Einstein N=2 supergravity with a boundary six-dimensional chiral N=(0,1) theory of vectors and charged hypermultiplets. The boundary consists of two brane worlds sitting at the fixed points of an S^1/Z_2 compactification of the seven-dimensional bulk supergravity. The resulting 6D massless spectrum surviving the orbifold projection is anomalous. By introducing boundary fields at the orbifold fixed points, we show that all anomalies are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. In addition, all couplings of the boundary fields to the bulk are completely specified by supersymmetry. We emphasize that there is no bulk Chern-Simons term to cancel the anomalies. The latter is traded for a Green-Schwarz term which emerges in the boundary theory after a duality transformation implemented to construct the bulk supergravity.Comment: LaTeX, 42 pages; typos corrected, reference added, version to appear in Phys.     Sub-threshold resonances in few-neutron systems

    Three- and four-neutron systems are studied within the framework of the hyperspherical approach with a local S-wave nn-potential. Possible bound and resonant states of these systems are sought as zeros of three- and four-body Jost functions in the complex momentum plane. It is found that zeros closest to the origin correspond to sub-threshold (nnn) (1/2-) and (nnnn) (0+) resonant states. The positions of these zeros turned out to be sensitive to the choice of the nnnn--potential. For the Malfliet- Tjon potential they are E(nnn)=-4.9-i6.9 (MeV) and E(nnnn)=-2.6-i9.0 (MeV). Movement of the zeros with an artificial increase of the potential strength also shows an extreme sensitivity to the choice of potential. Thus, to generate ^3n and ^4n bound states, the Yukawa potential needs to be multiplied by 2.67 and 2.32 respectively, while for the Malfliet-Tjon potential the required multiplicative factors are 4.04 and 3.59.Comment: Latex, 22 pages, no PS-figures, submitted to J.Phys.

    The quantum dynamical evolution of atomic and molecular aggregates, from their compact to their fragmented states, is parametrized by a single collective radial parameter. Treating all the remaining particle coordinates in d dimensions democratically, as a set of angles orthogonal to this collective radius or by equivalent variables, bypasses all independent-particle approximations. The invariance of the total kinetic energy under arbitrary d-dimensional transformations which preserve the radial parameter gives rise to novel quantum numbers and ladder operators interconnecting its eigenstates at each value of the radial parameter. We develop the systematics and technology of this approach, introducing the relevant mathematics tutorially, by analogy to the familiar theory of angular momentum in three dimensions. The angular basis functions so obtained are treated in a manifestly coordinate-free manner, thus serving as a flexible generalized basis for carrying out detailed studies of wavefunction evolution in multi-particle systems.Comment: 37 pages, 2 eps figure

    Early Pars Plana Vitrectomy for Treatment of Acute Infective Endophthalmitis

    Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of early pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for the treatment of acute infective endophthalmitis, and identify prognostic factors for better visual outcome. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent early PPV within 72 hours of presentation for the treatment of acute infective bacterial endophthalmitis and presented to a large tertiary referral center in New South Wales, Australia, between January 2009 and December 2013 were included. Changes in best-corrected visual acuity (VA) from baseline to 1 year were examined. Results: A total of 64 patients were included. The inciting events were cataract surgery (53%), intravitreal injection (36%), trabeculectomy (3%), and endogenous (3%). The mean VA improved from 3.1 logMAR (hand motion) at baseline to 1.02 (approximately 20/200) at 1 year, with 42% achieving final VA equal to or better than 0.477 logMAR (20/60) following early PPV. Positive prognostic factors were negative microbial cultures (P < 0.01) and etiology of post-cataract surgery (P < 0.01). In multivariable analyses adjusting for age and prognostic factors, patients with baseline VA of light perception and hand motion achieved greater visual gains than those with counting fingers, with gains of logMAR of -2.68, -2.09, and -0.85, respectively (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Most patients who undergo early PPV experience substantial VA improvement. Negative microbial cultures and endophthalmitis after cataract surgery were associated with better final visual outcome. Patients with presenting VA of light perception or hand motion achieved higher visual gains than those with counting fingers, suggesting the possibility that early PPV may be beneficial in both groups

    Superconductivity in Ropes of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    We report measurements on ropes of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWNT) in low-resistance contact to non-superconducting (normal) metallic pads, at low voltage and at temperatures down to 70 mK. In one sample, we find a two order of magnitude resistance drop below 0.55 K, which is destroyed by a magnetic field of the order of 1T, or by a d.c. current greater than 2.5 microA. These features strongly suggest the existence of superconductivity in ropes of SWNT.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

    Molecular genetic and bacteriological methods of bovine mycoplasmosis diagnosis

    Mycoplasmas are bacteria that are extremely unstable in vitro as they lack a rigid cell wall. They are most often detected in association with other pathogens, including those that can become L-forms if treated with antibiotics. Mycoplasma colonies, as well as colonies of L-form bacteria, have a typical «fried egg» appearance, therefore it is necessary to differentiate them for the accurate diagnosis and choice of treatment. The paper presents data on mycoplasma infection diagnosis in cattle and results of differentiation of isolated mycoplasma and L-form bacteria colonies using multiple passaging and real-time polymerase chain reaction. For that, 177 samples were collected from animals with mycoplasmosis clinical signs, 45 of them were tested using molecular genetic method, 132 samples were subjected to bacteriological testing. Mycoplasma DNA was detected in 71.1% of samples, and specific colonies were detected in 3.8% of samples. Such biochemical tests of mycoplasma species identification as arginine hydrolysis, blood serum liquefaction, film and grain formation, inoculation into Tween-80-containing medium, hemadsorption and hemolysis of erythrocytes do not allow an objective assessment of the species belonging to mycoplasmas, but, according to the results obtained, the isolated species most likely belongs to Mycoplasma dispar, which is pathogenic for cattle. Real-time polymerase chain reaction is undoubtedly the most accurate and rapid diagnostic method for mycoplasmosis, but a preliminary diagnosis can also be established bacteriologically within 2–7 days. In addition, during microbiological testing, it is possible to assess the antibiotic resistance of mycoplasma isolates, thereby developing an optimal and high-quality scheme of the disease treatment and prevention

    Flavor Mediation Delivers Natural SUSY

    If supersymmetry (SUSY) solves the hierarchy problem, then naturalness considerations coupled with recent LHC bounds require non-trivial superpartner flavor structures. Such "Natural SUSY" models exhibit a large mass hierarchy between scalars of the third and first two generations as well as degeneracy (or alignment) among the first two generations. In this work, we show how this specific beyond the standard model (SM) flavor structure can be tied directly to SM flavor via "Flavor Mediation". The SM contains an anomaly-free SU(3) flavor symmetry, broken only by Yukawa couplings. By gauging this flavor symmetry in addition to SM gauge symmetries, we can mediate SUSY breaking via (Higgsed) gauge mediation. This automatically delivers a natural SUSY spectrum. Third-generation scalar masses are suppressed due to the dominant breaking of the flavor gauge symmetry in the top direction. More subtly, the first-two-generation scalars remain highly degenerate due to a custodial U(2) symmetry, where the SU(2) factor arises because SU(3) is rank two. This custodial symmetry is broken only at order (m_c/m_t)^2. SUSY gauge coupling unification predictions are preserved, since no new charged matter is introduced, the SM gauge structure is unaltered, and the flavor symmetry treats all matter multiplets equally. Moreover, the uniqueness of the anomaly-free SU(3) flavor group makes possible a number of concrete predictions for the superpartner spectrum.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. v2 references added, minor changes to flavor constraints and a little discussion adde
