Self-Efficacy Matters More Than Interruptions in a Sequential Multitasking Experiment
Interruptions and multitasking have received a great deal of attention from researchers. The present study is the first to examine task self-efficacy along with interruptions in an experimental multitasking framework. Perceptions of resumption lag times and task rehearsal were also examined. Participants (N= 110) completed a primary task (puzzle) with some being interrupted to pursue a secondary task (a word search) either once or four times. Uninterrupted participants completed the puzzle 26% faster than those interrupted once and 30% faster than those interrupted four times. However, self-efficacy predicted performance much more strongly than did interruptions, and therefore should receive more attention in future studies. Participants generally disagreed that they experienced resumption lags or task rehearsal. Practically, the results indicate that training to the point of high self-efficacy on tasks will do more to enhance performance than would eliminating interruptions. Care Experiences of Women Who Used Opioids and Experienced Fetal or Infant Loss
Objective
To explore care experiences of women who used prescription or illicit opioids and experienced fetal or infant loss.
Design
A qualitative, descriptive design with secondary data analysis.
Setting
The Fetal and Infant Mortality Review program in an urban Midwestern county in the United States.
Participants
Eleven women with histories of prescription or illicit opioid use who experienced fetal or infant loss participated in the semistructured telephone or in-person interview portion of the mortality case review.
Methods
We used thematic analysis to analyze interview data.
Results
Five themes were identified related to the care experiences of participants throughout pregnancy and fetal/infant loss: Frustration and anger related to not being heard, feeling minimalized; Being overwhelmed with attempts to process and understand medical complications and outcomes; Profound sense of grief and coping with loss; Need to understand why and make difficult decisions; and Placing blame and guilt over death.
Conclusion
Our findings suggest that women who use opioids and experience fetal or infant loss have complex care, educational, and emotional needs. In the development of interventions for these women, it is important to address their unique and complex circumstances
Discovery of a Brown Dwarf Companion to Gliese 570ABC: A 2MASS T Dwarf Significantly Cooler than Gliese 229B
We report the discovery of a widely separated (258\farcs3\pm0\farcs4) T
dwarf companion to the Gl 570ABC system. This new component, Gl 570D, was
initially identified from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). Its
near-infrared spectrum shows the 1.6 and 2.2 \micron CH absorption bands
characteristic of T dwarfs, while its common proper motion with the Gl 570ABC
system confirms companionship. Gl 570D (M = 16.470.07) is nearly a
full magnitude dimmer than the only other known T dwarf companion, Gl 229B, and
estimates of L = (2.80.3)x10 L_{\sun} and T = 75050
K make it significantly cooler and less luminous than any other known brown
dwarf companion. Using evolutionary models by Burrows et al. and an adopted age
of 2-10 Gyr, we derive a mass estimate of 5020 M for this object.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted by ApJ
Atomic layer deposition of high-k dielectric layers on Ge and III-V MOS channels
Ge and III-V semiconductors are potential high performance channel materials for future CMOS devices. In this work, we have studied At. Layer Deposition (ALD) of high-k dielec. layers on Ge and GaAs substrates. We focus at the effect of the oxidant (H2O, O3, O2, O2 plasma) during gate stack formation. GeO2, obtained by Ge oxidn. in O2 or O3, is a promising passivation layer. The germanium oxide thickness can be scaled down below 1 nm, but such thin layers contain Ge in oxidn. states lower than 4+. Still, elec. results indicate that small amts. of Ge in oxidn. states lower than 4+ are not detrimental for device performance. Partial intermixing was obsd. for high-k dielec. and GeO2 or GaAsOx, suggesting possible correlations in the ALD growth mechanisms on Ge and GaAs substrates. [on SciFinder (R)
The Spectra of T Dwarfs I: Near-Infrared Data and Spectral Classification
We present near-infrared spectra for a sample of T dwarfs, including eleven
new discoveries made using the Two Micron All Sky Survey. These objects are
distinguished from warmer (L-type) brown dwarfs by the presence of methane
absorption bands in the 1--2.5 \micron spectral region. A first attempt at a
near-infrared classification scheme for T dwarfs is made, based on the
strengths of CH and HO bands and the shapes of the 1.25, 1.6, and 2.1
\micron flux peaks. Subtypes T1 V through T8 V are defined, and spectral
indices useful for classification are presented. The subclasses appear to
follow a decreasing T scale, based on the evolution of CH and
HO bands and the properties of L and T dwarfs with known distances.
However, we speculate that this scale is not linear with spectral type for cool
dwarfs, due to the settling of dust layers below the photosphere and subsequent
rapid evolution of spectral morphology around T 1300--1500 K.
Similarities in near-infrared colors and continuity of spectral features
suggest that the gap between the latest L dwarfs and earliest T dwarfs has been
nearly bridged. This argument is strengthened by the possible role of CH as
a minor absorber shaping the K-band spectra of the latest L dwarfs. Finally, we
discuss one peculiar T dwarf, 2MASS 0937+2931, which has very blue
near-infrared colors (J-K = 0.24) due to suppression of the 2.1
\micron peak. The feature is likely caused by enhanced collision-induced
H absorption in a high pressure or low metallicity photosphere.Comment: 74 pages including 26 figures, accepted by ApJ v563 December 2001;
