A solution to the fermion doubling problem for supersymmetric theories on the transverse lattice

Species doubling is a problem that infects most numerical methods that use a spatial lattice. An understanding of species doubling can be found in the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem which gives a set of conditions that require species doubling. The transverse lattice approach to solving field theories, which has at least one spatial lattice, fails one of the conditions of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem nevertheless one still finds species doubling for the standard Lagrangian formulation of the transverse lattice. We will show that the Supersymmetric Discrete Light Cone Quantization (SDLCQ) formulation of the transverse lattice does not have species doubling.Comment: 4 pages, v2: a reference and comments added, the version to appear in Phys. Chandra detection of extended X-ray emission from the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi

Radio, infrared, and optical observations of the 2006 eruption of the symbiotic recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) showed that the explosion produced non-spherical ejecta. Some of this ejected material was in the form of bipolar jets to the east and west of the central source. Here we describe Xray observations taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory one and a half years after the beginning of the outburst that reveal narrow, extended structure with a position angle of approximately 300 degrees (east of north). Although the orientation of the extended feature in the X-ray image is consistent with the readout direction of the CCD detector, extensive testing suggests that the feature is not an artifact. Assuming it is not an instrumental effect, the extended X-ray structure shows hot plasma stretching more than 1,900 AU from the central binary (taking a distance of 1.6 kpc). The X-ray emission is elongated in the northwest direction - in line with the extended infrared emission and some minor features in the published radio image. It is less consistent with the orientation of the radio jets and the main bipolar optical structure. Most of the photons in the extended X-ray structure have energies of less than 0.8 keV. If the extended X-ray feature was produced when the nova explosion occurred, then its 1".2 length as of 2007 August implies that it expanded at an average rate of more than 2 mas/d, which corresponds to a flow speed of greater than 6,000 km/s (d/1.6 kpc) in the plane of the sky. This expansion rate is similar to the earliest measured expansion rates for the radio jets.Comment: accepted in Ap

The N2-P3 complex of the evoked potential and human performance

    Get PDF
The N2-P3 complex and other endogenous components of human evoked potential provide a set of tools for the investigation of human perceptual and cognitive processes. These multidimensional measures of central nervous system bioelectrical activity respond to a variety of environmental and internal factors which have been experimentally characterized. Their application to the analysis of human performance in naturalistic task environments is just beginning. Converging evidence suggests that the N2-P3 complex reflects processes of stimulus evaluation, perceptual resource allocation, and decision making that proceed in parallel, rather than in series, with response generation. Utilization of these EP components may provide insights into the central nervous system mechanisms modulating task performance unavailable from behavioral measures alone. The sensitivity of the N2-P3 complex to neuropathology, psychopathology, and pharmacological manipulation suggests that these components might provide sensitive markers for the effects of environmental stressors on the human central nervous system

Attention, effort, and fatigue: Neuropsychological perspectives

    Get PDF
Models of attention, effort, and fatigue are reviewed. Methods are discussed for measuring these phenomena from a neuropsychological and psychophysiological perspective. The following methodologies are included: (1) the autonomic measurement of cognitive effort and quality of encoding; (2) serial assessment approaches to neurophysiological assessment; and (3) the assessment of subjective reports of fatigue using multidimensional ratings and their relationship to neurobehavioral measures

New Relations for Excited Baryons in Large N_c QCD

We show that excited baryons in large N_c QCD form multiplets, within which masses are first split at O(1/N_c). The dominant couplings of resonances to various mesons are highly constrained: The N(1535) decays at leading 1/N_c order exclusively to eta-N rather than pi-N, and vice versa for the N(1650). This multiplet structure is reproduced by a simple large N_c quark model, well studied in the literature, that describes resonances as single-quark excitations.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, ReVTeX 4. Includes new discussion of previous work on excited baryon tower

On free loop spaces of toric spaces

Growth of the Hilbert-Poincar\"e series for the rational homology of the free loop space of a toric space is addressed. In case the toric space is a manifold, the structure of the fan dictates whether the Hilbert-Poincar\"e series has exponential growth. Applications are made to the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct periodic geodesics
