Structure of the ATP-Synthase from Chloroplasts and Mitochondria Studied by Electron Microscopy
The structure of the ATP-synthase, F0F1 , from spinach chloroplasts and beef heart mitochondria has been investigated by electron microscopy with negatively stained specimens. The detergent-solubilized ATP-synthase forms string-like structures in which the F0 parts are aggregated. In most cases, the F, parts are arranged at alternating sides along the string. The F0 part has an approximate cylindrical shape with heights of 8.3 and 8.9 nm and diameters of 6.2 and 6.4 nm for the chloroplast and mitochondrial enzyme, respectively. The F, parts are disk-like structures with a diameter of about 11.5 nm and a height of about 8.5 nm. The F, parts are attached to the strings, composed of Fn parts, in most cases, with their smallest dimension parallel to the strings. The stalk connecting F0 and F, has a length of 3.7 nm and 4.3 nm and a diameter of 2.7 nm and 4.3 nm for the chloroplast and mitochondrial enzyme, respectively

Convergence of pass-through from money market to lending rates in EMU countries: new evidence
This paper examines whether the pass-through of monetary policy measures in 6 EMU countries has become more similar over time. The countries included are: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, and the sample period is 1980-2000. We conclude that major differences in pass-through exist in our sample, notably for the initial response to policy-induced interest rate changes. However, there is some (weak) evidence for convergence of monetary policy transmission.

Recent scientific research on electrothermal metallurgical processes
A wide range of industrial metallurgical heating and melting processes are carried out using electrothermal technologies. The application of electrothermal processes offers many advantages from technological, ecological and economical point of view. Although the technology level of the electro heating and melting installations and processes used in the industry today is very high, there are still potentials for improvement and optimization due to the increasing complexity of the applications and the strong requirements regarding the performance and quality of the products but also regarding the reduction of time and costs for the development of new processes and technologies. In this paper recent applications and future development trends for efficient heating and melting by electrothermal technologies in metallurgical processes are described along selected examples like induction heating for forging or rolling of billets, heat treatment of strips and plates, press-hardening processes, induction surface hardening of complex geometries, induction welding as well as induction melting processes

Traumatic lesions to the spinal cord of adult individuals will cause degeneration of the severed distal axons, retraction of the severed proximal axons, scar formation in the damaged area, and eventually regenerative signs, which will occur along the retracted proximal axons. Growth cone-like appendages appear and regenerating axons enter the scar tissue. Within the relatively unstructured scar tissue the growth cones appear to lose their sense of direction, as well as their motive force, and progress ceases. Photodissociation Dynamics of the Iodine-Arene Charge-Transfer Complex
The photodissociation reaction of the molecular iodine:arene charge-transfer (CT) complex into an iodine atom and an iodine atom-arene fragment has been investigated using femtosecond pump-probe, resonance Raman, and molecular dynamics simulations. In the condensed phase the reaction proceeds on a time scale of less than 25 fs, in sharp contrast to the gas phase where the excited state lifetime of the complex is about 1 ps. Since little CT resonance enhancement is found in Raman studies on the I2-stretch vibration, it is concluded that rapid curve crossing occurs from the CT state to a dissociative surface. Of particular interest is the finding that the polarization anisotropy of the iodine atom:arene (I:ar) photoproduct decays on a time scale of 350 fs both in pure arene solvents as well as in mixed arene/cyclohexane solutions. This latter finding rules out that secondary I:ar complex formation is the main cause of this ultrafast depolarization effect. The initial polarization anisotropy is found to be ~0.12 in pure mesitylene and ~0.34 in mixed mesitylene/cyclohexane solutions. Semiempirical configuration-interaction calculations show that, except for the axial CT complex, the transition dipole is aligned almost parallel to the normal of the arene plane. The oscillator strength of the CT transition is found to be maximal in the oblique conformation with the I2 molecule positioned at an angle of about 30° with respect to the arene normal. This iodine angular dependence of the oscillator strength leads to photoselection of bent I2:ar complexes in pump-probe experiments. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm earlier findings that the I2:benzene complex is a fragile entity and that it persists only for a few hundred femtoseconds. These simulations also provide the proper time scale for the decay of the polarization anisotropy. The fact that the photoproduct experiences a substantial torque in the dissociation process explains the absence of a cage effect in this reaction.
