Increasing Performances of TCP Data Transfers Through Multiple Parallel Connections

    Get PDF
Although Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a widely deployed and successful protocol, it shows some limitations in present-day environments. In particular, it is unable to exploit multiple (physical or logical) paths between two hosts. This paper presents PATTHEL, a session-layer solution designed for parallelizing stream data transfers. Parallelization is achieved by striping the data flow among multiple TCP channels. This solution does not require invasive changes to the networking stack and can be implemented entirely in user space. Moreover, it is flexible enough to suit several scenarios - e.g. it can be used to split a data transfer among multiple relays within a peer-to-peer overlay networ

Implicit attitude toward caregiving: The moderating role of adult attachment styles

Attachment and caregiving are separate motivational systems that share the common evolutionary purpose of favoring child security. In the goal of studying the processes underlying the transmission of attachment styles, this study focused on the role of adult attachment styles in shaping preferences toward particular styles of caregiving. We hypothesized a correspondence between attachment and caregiving styles: we expect an individual to show a preference for a caregiving behavior coherent with his/her own attachment style, in order to increase the chance of passing it on to offspring. We activated different representations of specific caregiving modalities in females, by using three videos in which mothers with different Adult Attachment states of mind played with their infants. Participants' facial expressions while watching were recorded and analyzed with FaceReader software. After each video, participants' attitudes toward the category "mother" were measured, both explicitly (semantic differential) and implicitly (single target-implicit association task, ST-IAT). Participants' adult attachment styles (experiences in close relationships revised) predicted attitudes scores, but only when measured implicitly. Participants scored higher on the ST-IAT after watching a video coherent with their attachment style. No effect was found on the facial expressions of disgust. These findings suggest a role of adult attachment styles in shaping implicit attitudes related to the caregiving system

    A model for Hopfions on the space-time S^3 x R

We construct static and time dependent exact soliton solutions for a theory of scalar fields taking values on a wide class of two dimensional target spaces, and defined on the four dimensional space-time S^3 x R. The construction is based on an ansatz built out of special coordinates on S^3. The requirement for finite energy introduces boundary conditions that determine an infinite discrete spectrum of frequencies for the oscillating solutions. For the case where the target space is the sphere S^2, we obtain static soliton solutions with non-trivial Hopf topological charges. In addition, such hopfions can oscillate in time, preserving their topological Hopf charge, with any of the frequencies belonging to that infinite discrete spectrum.Comment: Enlarged version with the time-dependent solutions explicitly given. Like grandparents, like parents: Empirical evidence and psychoanalytic thinking on the transmission of parenting styles

    Get PDF
The authors discuss the issue of intergenerational transmission of parenting from an empirical and psychoanalytic perspective. After presenting a framework to explain their conception of parenting, they describe intergenerational transmission of parenting as a key to interpreting and eventually changing parenting behaviors. Then they present (1) the empirical approach aimed at determining if there is actually a stability across generations that contributes to harsh parenting and eventually maltreatment and (2) the psyphoanalytic thinking that seeks to explain the continuity in terms of representations and clinical phenomena. The authors also discuss the relationship between the attachment and the caregiving systems and hypothesize a common base for the two systems in childhood experience. Finally, they propose the psychoanalytic perspective as a fruitful theoretical framework to integrate the evidence for the neurophysiological mediators and moderators of intergenerational transmission. Psychoanalytically informed research can provide clinically relevant insights and hypotheses to be tested

Assuming that fashion is a social manifestation, and therefore able to use its power to pass along messages, this work that has as its theme the communication of conceptual shoes, it was developed with the aim to analyze semiotically the creations of a designer, comprising what and how the conceptual shoes communicate

A comunicação e a diferenciação entre calçado comercial X calçado conceitual através de anålise semiótica

Fashion communication occurs through images, shapes, and cultural values, leading individuals to feel the need to "belong" to a particular group. This article investigates the communication and differentiation between commercial footwear V conceptual analysis, through semiotic analysis. For such differentiation could be studied, it was made a brief study on semiotic analysis, settling some points to be analyzed in commercial and conceptual images of footwear in order to demonstrate this differentiation. The result of this analysis shows that the interpreter differentiates the products by several aspects, determining which one to use and the other as conceptual or symbolic object that favors the concept in detriment of the use or sellable.

Pyramiding resistance genes and widening the genetic base of the apple (Malus 7 domestica Borkh.) crop

    Get PDF
Apple breeding is active worldwide and yet the apple crop is in a precarious state as it relies on few dominant cultivars and only the Rvi6 (formerly Vf) gene, that confers resistance to scab, has been extensively exploited in the cultivars entered the market in recent years. However, there are some 20 disease resistance genes described in apple and the apple germplasm includes thousands of accessions in the repositories. In this paper, a breeding programme is described, whereby 36 genotypes, including ancient and contemporary apple cultivars, were crossed to produce a new set of selections that combine extensive genetic resources with pyramided resistance genes to several apple diseases, such as scab and powdery mildew. The 110 cross combinations carried out successfully, of the 260 initially planned, produced 7,876 offsprings, reduced to 2,969 after screening with molecular markers associated with five resistance genes. Selections with three or two resistance genes and good agronomic characteristics were kept for further field observations with the aims of creating new cultivars for the market and new parents for future breeding projects

    Zooming-in on Instantons at HERA

    Get PDF
In view of the intriguing, preliminary search results for instanton-induced events at HERA from the H1 collaboration, some important remaining theoretical issues are discussed. Notably, the question is addressed, to which extent the H1 analysis may be directly compared to our original predictions from instanton-perturbation theory, since certain fiducial cuts are lacking in the H1 data. Various theoretical uncertainties are evaluated and their impact on the observed excess is discussed. An improved understanding of the experimental findings along with an encouraging over-all agreement with our original predictions seems to emerge.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
