On the boundary-layer structure of patterns of convection in rectangular-planform containers
This paper considers the structure of steady-state solutions of the SwiftâHohenberg
equation describing convection in shallow rectangular-planform containers heated
from below. The lateral dimensions of the planform are assumed to be much larger
than the characteristic wavelength of convection. Results are restricted to patterns
composed of rolls orthogonal to the sides of the rectangle in which case convection
sets in at a critical value of the Rayleigh number in the form of rolls parallel to
the shorter sides. This primary bifurcation from the conductive state of no motion
produces a solution which subsequently undergoes a secondary bifurcation in which
the low-amplitude motion near the shorter sides is replaced locally by cross-rolls
perpendicular to the sides. This results in the formation of grain boundaries (or
domain boundaries) within the fluid which mark the division between the different
roll orientations. With increasing Rayleigh number the grain boundaries approach the sides of the
rectangle and a boundary-layer structure is formed. In the present paper the method
of matched asymptotic expansions is used to determine this boundary-layer structure
and to predict the location of the grain boundaries. An interesting feature of the
solution is that the grain boundaries develop significant curvature and bend into the
corners of the rectangle, where the local solution is also determined. The results are compared with numerical computations of the secondary solution
branch and with previous numerical and experimental work.</jats:p
The Valuation Impact of Financial Advisors: An Empirical Analysis of REIT Mergers and Acquisitions
This paper analyzes the effect of financial advisor-monitors on the valuation of real estate investment trust (REIT) mergers. Advisor choice determinants and the effect of advisors on transaction value are examined using a sample of REIT mergers for the 1981 to 2001 period. A two-stage target firm pricing model is estimated: the first stage (logit) estimates the probability of advisor use and the second stage analyzes the effect of advisors on target firm valuation. The results indicate that financial advisor monitoring, possibly by reducing information asymmetries, has significant positive effects on the value of REIT acquisitions.
Exposure to Sexualized Images of Athletes Negatively Affects Adolescent Male Athletesâ Appraisals of Self and Others
This study used a between-subjects experimental design to examine the effects of viewing sexualized versus performance images of male athletes on male adolescent athletes perceptions of self and other. Participants (n = 83, mean age = 15.4) viewed sexualized or performance images (n = 5) of male celebrity athletes and then completed explicit and implicit measures of self-perceptions. They also judged the athletic competence and respectability of the athletes in the images. Results indicated that viewing sexualized images resulted in lower self-esteem and lower ratings of the athletic competence and respectability of the athletes in the photos compared to viewing performance images. These findings are among the first to demonstrate the negative effects of viewing sexualized images of male athletes on adolescent males
Granular rheology: measuring boundary forces with laser-cut leaf springs
In granular physics experiments, it is a persistent challenge to obtain the
boundary stress measurements necessary to provide full a rheological
characterization of the dynamics. Here, we describe a new technique by which
the outer boundary of a 2D Couette cell both confines the granular material and
provides spatially- and temporally- resolved stress measurements. This key
advance is enabled by desktop laser-cutting technology, which allows us to
design and cut linearly-deformable walls with a specified spring constant. By
tracking the position of each segment of the wall, we measure both the normal
and tangential stress throughout the experiment. This permits us to calculate
the amount of shear stress provided by basal friction, and thereby determine
accurate values of .Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, powder and grains 2017 conferenc
