    Video vehicle detection at signalised junctions: a simulation-based study

    Many existing advanced methods of traffic signal control depend on information about approaching traffic provided by inductive loop detectors at particular points in the road. But analysis of images from CCTV cameras can in principle provide more comprehensive information about traffic approaching and passing through junctions, and cameras may be easier to install and maintain than loop detectors, and some systems based on video detection have already been in use for some time. Against this background, computer simulation has been used to explore the potential of existing and immediately foreseeable capability in automatic on-line image analysis to extract information relevant to signal control from images provided by cameras mounted in acceptable positions at signal-controlled junctions. Some consequences of extracting relevant information in different ways were investigated in the context of an existing detailed simulation model of vehicular traffic moving through junctions under traffic-responsive signal control, and the development of one basic and one advanced algorithm for traffic-responsive control. The work was confined as a first step to operation of one very simple signalcontrolled junction. Two techniques for extraction of information from images were modelled - a more ambitious technique based on distinguishing most of the individual vehicles visible to the camera, and a more modest technique requiring only that the presence of vehicles in any part of the image be distinguished from the background scene. In the latter case, statistical modelling was used to estimate the number of vehicles corresponding to any single area of the image that represents vehicles rather than background. At the simple modelled junction, each technique of extraction enabled each of the algorithms for traffic-responsive control of the signals to achieve average delays per vehicle appreciably lower than those given by System D control, and possibly competitive with those that MOVA would give, but comparison with MOVA was beyond the scope of the initial study. These results of simulation indicate that image analysis of CCTV pictures should be able to provide sufficient information in practice for traffic-responsive control that is competitive with existing techniques. Ways in which the work could be taken further were discussed with practitioners, but have not yet been progressed

    Bistability and instability of dark-antidark solitons in the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schroedinger equation

    We characterize the full family of soliton solutions sitting over a background plane wave and ruled by the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schroedinger equation in the regime where a quintic focusing term represents a saturation of the cubic defocusing nonlinearity. We discuss existence and properties of solitons in terms of catastrophe theory and fully characterize bistability and instabilities of the dark-antidark pairs, revealing new mechanisms of decay of antidark solitons.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, accepted in PR

    Tracing a relativistic Milky Way within the RAMOD measurement protocol

    Advancement in astronomical observations and technical instrumentation implies taking into account the general relativistic effects due the gravitational fields encountered by the light while propagating from the star to the observer. Therefore, data exploitation for Gaia-like space astrometric mission (ESA, launch 2013) requires a fully relativistic interpretation of the inverse ray-tracing problem, namely the development of a highly accurate astrometric models in accordance with the geometrical environment affecting light propagation itself and the precepts of the theory of measurement.     Odebrecht S.A.: The rise, fall and the future of Latin America’s construction and petrochemical giant

    Odebrecht S.A. is a Brazilian multinational conglomerate that operates in the engineering and construction, petrochemical, agroindustrial, oil and gas, infrastructure, transportation and real estate sectors. The Odebrecht group currently employs 47,000 people in 7 business units, operating in 14 countries, with a gross revenue of 22.3 billion USD. This represents a steep decrease when compared to its 2013 numbers, when it boasted a revenue of 41.3 billion USD with 181,000 collaborators in 15 business units spread across 23 countries. The leading construction and petrochemical company in Latin America, Odebrecht S.A. became heavily involved in the corruption scheme investigated by Brazilian Federal Police’s Operation Car Wash. According to the authorities, the company used various illicit practices to secure roughly 100 projects in 12 countries, paying off USD 3.3 billion in bribes to important political and business figures in the countries in which they operated. As the company tries to restructure itself, both in terms of performance and in terms of image, questions arise if the measures taken will be enough to keep the company alive. How has Odebrecht handled the transformation of its name from a successful case study into a synonym with corruption and illicit relations with officials?     Crossover dynamics of dispersive shocks in Bose-Einstein condensates characterized by two and three-body interactions

    We show that the perturbative nonlinearity associated with three-atom interactions, competing with standard two-body repulsive interactions, can change dramatically the evolution of 1D dispersive shock waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, we prove the existence of a rich crossover dynamics, ranging from the formation of multiple shocks regularized by coexisting trains of dark and antidark matter waves, to 1D soliton collapse. For a given scattering length, all these different regimes can be accessed by varying the number of atoms in the condensate.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Transforming Sustainable Value in the Construction Industry – The role of Social Movements

    Projects pursuing the balance of economic, ecological, and social aspects are being increasingly implemented by the construction industry. This shift represents a paradigm change and evidences new values being acknowledged within the sector. Concurrently, construction scholars tend to emphasize the creation, retention and addition of value, focusing mostly on costs and client deliverables. However, less attention is paid to the process of value change, specifically one that focuses on alternative stakeholders, such as Social Movements. We employ Social Movement theory to comprehend how these organizations affect the notion of value and value change in this industry. Their role is accentuated as a source for a value paradigm change in the form of institutional pressures that shape the values of other stakeholders of the construction industry. These pressures elicit a response in the form of a broader incorporation of sustainable practices amongst construction projects, which effectively alters the industry’s notion of value. Additionally, we showcase a theoretical model that describes the pressure channels originated by Social Movements and their process mechanism affecting the construction industry

    Factors influencing the stable carbon isotopic composition of suspended and sinking organic matter in the coastal Antarctic sea ice environment

    A high resolution time-series analysis of stable carbon isotopic signatures in particulate organic carbon (δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub>) and associated biogeochemical parameters in sea ice and surface waters provides an insight into the factors affecting δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> in the coastal western Antarctic Peninsula sea ice environment. The study covers two austral summer seasons in Ryder Bay, northern Marguerite Bay between 2004 and 2006. A shift in diatom species composition during the 2005/06 summer bloom to near-complete biomass dominance of <i>Proboscia inermis</i> is strongly correlated with a large ~10 ‰ negative isotopic shift in δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> that cannot be explained by a concurrent change in concentration or isotopic signature of CO<sub>2</sub>. We hypothesise that the δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> shift may be driven by the contrasting biochemical mechanisms and utilisation of carbon-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) in different diatom species. Specifically, very low δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> in <i>P. inermis</i> may be caused by the lack of a CCM, whilst some diatom species abundant at times of higher δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> may employ CCMs. These short-lived yet pronounced negative δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> excursions drive a 4 ‰ decrease in the seasonal average δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> signal, which is transferred to sediment traps and core-top sediments and consequently has the potential for preservation in the sedimentary record. This 4 ‰ difference between seasons of contrasting sea ice conditions and upper water column stratification matches the full amplitude of glacial-interglacial Southern Ocean δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> variability and, as such, we invoke phytoplankton species changes as a potentially important factor influencing sedimentary δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub>. We also find significantly higher δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> in sea ice than surface waters, consistent with autotrophic carbon fixation in a semi-closed environment and possible contributions from post-production degradation, biological utilisation of HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>−</sup> and production of exopolymeric substances. This study demonstrates the importance of surface water diatom speciation effects and isotopically heavy sea ice-derived material for δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> in Antarctic coastal environments and underlying sediments, with consequences for the utility of diatom-based δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>POC</sub> in the sedimentary record

    A general relativistic model for the light propagation in the gravitational field of the Solar System: the dynamical case

    Modern astrometry is based on angular measurements at the micro-arcsecond level. At this accuracy a fully general relativistic treatment of the data reduction is required. This paper concludes a series of articles dedicated to the problem of relativistic light propagation, presenting the final microarcsecond version of a relativistic astrometric model which enable us to trace back the light path to its emitting source throughout the non-stationary gravity field of the moving bodies in the Solar System. The previous model is used as test-bed for numerical comparisons to the present one. Here we also test different versions of the computer code implementing the model at different levels of complexity to start exploring the best trade-off between numerical efficiency and the micro-arcsecond accuracy needed to be reached.Comment: 40 pages, 5 figures.     Landscapes of Northern Lombardy: from the glacial scenery of Upper Valtellina to the prealpine lacustrine environment of Lake Como

    In the region between Valtellina and Lake Como in the Central Italian Alps, one can visit, in a relatively small area, some of the best examples of mountain geomorphological landscapes of Italy. Eight specific sites-showing peculiar glacial, periglacial, structural, gravity-induced and erosional landforms-have been selected to illustrate how different landscapes may originate from geomorphological modelling of different lithotypes in different morphogenetic systems. These eight sites are exemplary cases in which significant evidence of past and current climatic and structural conditions characterising this region is exhibited

    Numerical modeling of landquakes

    International audienceThe Thurwieser landslide that occurred in Italy in 2004 and the seismic waves it generated have been simulated and compared to the seismic signal recorded a few tens of kilometers from the landslide source (i.e., landquake). The main features of the low frequency seismic signal are reproduced by the simulation. Topography effects on the flowing mass have a major impact on the generated seismic signal whereas they weakly affect low-frequency wave propagation. Simulation of the seismic signal makes it possible to discriminate between possible alternative scenarios for flow dynamics and to provide first estimates of the rheological parameters during the flow. As landquakes are continuously recorded by seismic networks, our results provide a new way to collect data on the dynamics and rheology of natural flows
