    Social capital and soil conservation: evidence from the Philippines

    The formation of social capital is hypothesised to enhance collective efforts for soil conservation. The Landcare Program in the Southern Philippines promotes simple conservation practices in upland environments by supporting community landcare groups and municipal landcare associations, thus augmenting social capital. A study was conducted in 2002 to evaluate the Landcare Program, using a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques. In this paper the relationship between social capital formation and adoption of soil conservation is investigated.     In response to demand from China, rubber smallholdings are being established by shifting cultivators in Northern Laos, encouraged by government land-use policy. We examine the economics of smallholder rubber production in an established rubbergrowing village and model the likely expansion of smallholder rubber in Northern Laos. Data were obtained from key informants, group interviews, direct observation, and a farm-household survey. Latex yields were estimated using the Bioeconomic Rubber Agroforestry Support System (BRASS). A financial model was developed to estimate the net present value for a representative rubber smallholding.     Living on the margin: Assessing the economic impacts of Landcare in the Philippine uplands

    In the Philippines, about 38 per cent of the population resides in rural areas where poverty remains a significant problem. In 2006, 47 per cent of all households in Bohol Province fell below the national poverty line, with the percentage even higher in upland communities. These households often exist in marginal landscapes that are under significant pressure from ongoing resource degradation and rising input costs. This paper first explores whether the adoption of Landcare practices in a highly degraded landscape has resulted in improved livelihood outcomes for upland farming families in Bohol. Second, it analyses the potential for the piecemeal adoption of these measures to deliver tangible benefits at the watershed scale.     Landcare and livelihoods: The promotion and adoption of conservation farming systems in the Philippine uplands

    Slow adoption of conservation farming systems in the Philippine uplands is a major problem. To address this, the landcare approach, based on community landcare groups, is being piloted in several locations. The results of a study to evaluate the impact of the Landcare Program in Barangay Ned in Southern Mindanao are presented. The sustainable rural livelihoods approach was used as a framework for the evaluation. The study focused on two impacts, the adoption of conservation practices and the formation and development of landcare groups, drawing on four data sources - project reports, key informants, a questionnaire survey, and case studies of landcare groups. The Ned Landcare Program has been associated with rapid adoption of conservation farming practices and the rapid formation of landcare groups linked in an association. The main effect of the Program was to enhance human capital through practical, farmer-led training and extension, enabling farmers to incorporate soil conservation and agroforestry technologies in their farming systems, with desirable outcomes for livelihood security and environmental sustainability. The social capital formed, especially through the landcare association, was crucial to these outcomes. Ongoing partnerships with adequately resourced facilitating agencies were required to maintain the Landcare Program in the long term

    Supported planar bilayer formation by vesicle fusion: the interaction of phospholipid vesicles with surfaces and the effect of gramicidin on bilayer properties using atomic force microscopy

    AbstractWe have used magnetic alternating current mode atomic force microscopy (MAC–AFM) to investigate the formation of supported phospholipid bilayers (SPB) by the method of vesicle fusion. The systems studied were dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) on mica and mica modified with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxy-silane (APTES), and DOPC vesicles with gramicidin incorporated on mica and APTES-modified mica. The AFM images reveal three stages of bilayer formation: localized disklike features that are single bilayer footprints of the vesicles, partial continuous coverage, and finally complete bilayer formation. The mechanism of supported phospholipid bilayers formation is the fusion of proximal vesicles, rather than surface disk migration. This mechanism does not appear to be affected by incorporation of gramicidin or by surface modification. Once formed, the bilayer develops circular defects one bilayer deep. These defects grow in size and number until a dynamic equilibrium is reached

    Meta-research: justifying career disruption in funding applications, a survey of Australian researchers.

    Background: When researchers' careers are disrupted by life events - such as illness or childbirth - they often need to take extended time off. This creates a gap in their research output that can reduce their chances of winning funding. In Australia, applicants can disclose their career disruptions and peer reviewers are instructed to make appropriate adjustments. However, it is not clear if and how applicants use career disruption sections or how reviewers adjust and if they do it consistently. Methods: To examine career disruption, we used surveys of the Australian health and medical research community. We used both a random sample of Australian authors on PubMed and a non-random convenience sample. Results: Respondents expressed concerns that sharing information on career disruption would harm their chances of being funded, with 13% saying they have medical or social circumstances but would not include it in their application, with concerns about appearing 'weak'. Women were more reluctant to include disruption. There was inconsistency in how disruption was adjusted for, with less time given for those with depression compared with caring responsibilities, and less time given for those who did not provide medical details of their disruption. Conclusions: The current system is likely not adequately adjusting for career disruption and this may help explain the ongoing funding gap for senior women in Australia.     Regulation of Na,K-ATPase by PLMS, the Phospholemman-Like Protein From Shark: Molecular Cloning, Expression, Cellular Distribution and Functional Effects of PLMS

    In Na,K-ATPase membrane preparations from shark rectal glands, we have previously identified an FXYD domain-containing protein, phospholemman-like protein from shark, PLMS. This protein was shown to associate and modulate shark Na,K-ATPase activity in vitro. Here we describe the complete coding sequence, expression, and cellular localization of PLMS in the rectal gland of the shark Squalus acanthias. The mature protein contained 74 amino acids, including the N-terminal FXYD motif and a C-terminal protein kinase multisite phosphorylation motif. The sequence is preceded by a 20 amino acid candidate cleavable signal sequence. Immunogold labeling of the Na,K-ATPase α-subunit and PLMS showed the presence of α and PLMS in the basolateral membranes of the rectal gland cells and suggested their partial colocalization. Furthermore, through controlled proteolysis, the C terminus of PLMS containing the protein kinase phosphorylation domain can be specifically cleaved. Removal of this domain resulted in stimulation of maximal Na,K-ATPase activity, as well as several partial reactions. Both the E1∼P → E2-P reaction, which is partially rate-limiting in shark, and the K+ deocclusion reaction, E2(K) → E1, are accelerated. The latter may explain the finding that the apparent Na+ affinity was increased by the specific C-terminal PLMS truncation. Thus, these data are consistent with a model where interaction of the phosphorylation domain of PLMS with the Na,K-ATPase α-subunit is important for the modulation of shark Na,K-ATPase activity
