    Modelling tracer dispersion from landfills

    Several wind tunnel experiments of tracer dispersion from reduced-scale landfill models are presented in this paper. Different experimental set-ups, hot-wire anemometry, particle image velocimetry and tracer concentration measurements were used for the characterisation of flow and dispersion phenomena nearby the models. The main aim of these experiments is to build an extensive experimental data set useful for model validation purposes. To demonstrate the potentiality of the experimental data set, a validation exercise on several mathematical models was performed by means of a statistical technique. The experiments highlighted an increase in pollutant ground level concentrations immediately downwind from the landfill because of induced turbulence and mean flow deflection. This phenomenon turns out to be predominant for the dispersion process. Tests with a different set-up showed an important dependence of the dispersion phenomena from the landfill height and highlighted how complex orographic conditions downwind of the landfill do not affect significantly the dispersion behaviour. Validation exercises were useful for model calibration, improving code reliability, as well as evaluating performances. The Van Ulden model proved to give the most encouraging results

    Life cycle assessment (LCA) of an integrated biomass gasification combined cycle IBGCC with CO2 removal

    Based on the results of previous studies, the efficiency of a Brayton/Hirn combined cycle fuelled with a clean syngas produced by means of biomass gasification and equipped with CO2 removal by chemical absorption reached 33.94%, considering also the separate CO2 compression process. The specific CO2 emission of the power plant was 178 kg/MW h. In comparison with values previously found for an integrated coal gasification combined cycle (ICGCC) with upstream CO2 chemical absorption (38–39% efficiency, 130 kg/MW h specific CO2 emissions), this configuration seems to be attractive because of the possibility of operating with a simplified scheme and because of the possibility of using biomass in a more efficient way with respect to conventional systems. In this paper, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted with presenting the results on the basis of the Eco-Indicator 95 impact assessment methodology. Further, a comparison with the results previously obtained for the LCA of the ICGCC was performed in order to highlight the environmental impact of biomass production with fossil fuels utilisation. The LCA shows the important environmental advantages of biomass utilisation in terms of reduction of both greenhouse gas emissions and natural resource depletion, although an improved impact assessment methodology may better highlight the advantages due to the biomass utilisation

    PAHs and fullerenes as structural and compositional motifs tracing and distinguishing organic carbon from soot

    Examining the features distinguishing organic carbon from soot is crucial for understanding the source, the effect on the environment and their respective role in aerosol chemistry and soot formation. Beside to the obvious PAH picking-out in the low-mass mode (C number 40) of organic carbon, separated by carbon particulate matter extraction from young and mature soot thermophoretically sampled in premixed flames, was done by laser-desorption-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, exploiting the laser power increase. The perusal of organic carbon mass spectra through mathematical tools in comparison to aromatic and alkyl-substituted PAH-laden samples and the persistence of high-mass mode at high laser power led to exclude the contribution of dimers and alkyl-bridged PAHs attributing the second mode to both fully-benzenoid and cyclopenta-PAHs. Profound differences between mass spectra of organic carbon and soot were noticed as neither molecules nor radicals of PAHs could be drawn out from soot, even at high laser power, and only small radicals and carbon clusters like fullerenes were observed, especially for young soot. These inferences evidenced the importance of analysing separately organic carbon and soot especially if insights into soot particles nucleation are to be obtained. In the case of benzene flame, already at the inception, soot consists of strongly tangled aromatic motifs crosslinked each other, presumably deriving from reactive coagulation/clustering of relatively small aromatic hydrocarbons/radicals early formed. In methane and ethylene flames, coalesced liquid-like material composed of soot and PAHs is formed and transformed later on undergoing some carbonization and molecular growth, respectively

    A backward pre-stressing algorithm for efficient finite element implementation of in vivo material and geometrical parameters into fibril-reinforced mixture models of articular cartilage.

    Classical continuum mechanics has been widely used for implementation of the material models of articular cartilage (AC) mainly with the aid of the finite element (FE) method, which, in many cases, considers the stress-free configuration as the initial configuration. On the contrary, the AC experimental tests typically begin with the pre-stressed state of both material and geometrical properties. Indeed, imposing the initial pre-stress onto AC models with the in vivo values as the initial state would result in nonphysiologically expansion of the FE mesh due to the soft nature of AC. This change in the model configuration can also affect the material behavior kinematically in the mixture models of cartilage due to the intrinsic compressibility of the tissue. Although several different fixed-point backward algorithms, as the most straightforward pre-stressing methods, have already been developed to incorporate these initial conditions into FE models iteratively, such methods focused merely on the geometrical parameters, and they omitted the material variations of the anisotropic mixture models of AC. To address this issue, we propose an efficient algorithm generalizing the backward schemes to restore stress-free conditions by optimizing both the involving variables, and we hypothesize that it can affect the results considerably. To this end, a comparative simulation was implemented on an advanced and validated multiphasic model by the new and conventional algorithms. The results are in support of the hypothesis, as in our illustrative general AC model, the material parameters experienced a maximum error of 16% comparing to the initial in vivo data when the older algorithm was employed, and it led to a maximum variation of 44% in the recorded stresses comparing to the results of the new method. We conclude that our methodology enhanced the model fidelity, and it is applicable in most of the existing FE solvers for future mixture studies with accurate stress distributions

    Lifetime poverty and attitudes to retirement among a cohort born in 1958

    This report explores attitudes to, and plans for, retirement among a large cohort of British men and women born in 1958, with a particular focus on those who have experienced poverty during their working lives. This cohort, part of the so-called “Baby Boomer” generation, is now in its late 50s, and can expect a longer life expectancy than previous generations. There has been increasing awareness within policy and research circles that with increased longevity comes the need either to save more money over the life course or work longer in order to finance retirement. The 1958 cohort has therefore been subject to significant pension and employment policy reforms designed to encourage longer working lives. In this report, we use the uniquely rich data available in a birth cohort study to explore the lifelong and current factors that impact on retirement plans and expectations. In doing so, we focus in particular on the attitudes, experiences, plans and expectations of cohort members experiencing low family income, poverty and/or worklessness in their adult lives. This mixed methods research project draws on quantitative and qualitative data from the 1958 birth cohort study (also known as the National Child Development Study, or NCDS). Quantitative data have been collected from study members throughout their lives, most recently at the age of 55 in 2013 when 9,137 individuals took part. By using this rich longitudinal data, we are able to explore how experiences throughout the working life are associated with retirement attitudes, aspirations, plans and expectations.     Blue, green and yellow carbon dots derived from pyrogenic carbon: Structure and fluorescence behaviour

    Fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields featuring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other organics constituting pyrogenic carbon particulate matter (PM) are seldom measured. In this work, PM sampled in a fuel-rich ethylene flame was firstly separated in organic carbon (OC), soluble in dichloromethane, and refractory organic carbon (ROC), soluble in N-methyl pyrrolidinone, and then analyzed by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled with online UV and fluorescence detection, and by offline fluorescence spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. It was found that three classes of differently light emitting carbon dots (CDs) could be bottom-up synthesized in the same flame system by selecting appropriately the residence time. Actually, OC presented blue fluorescence regardless the residence time, whereas ROC sampled at low and high residence time emitted fluorescence in the green (green CDs) and in the yellow (yellow CDs) region, respectively. The SEC molecular weight of all CDs presented similar trimodal distributions, centered around 300, 1000 and 10,000 u. For the first time fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields of pyrogenic CD fractions were measured as additional parameters useful for discriminating the fluorescent components and inferring their structural properties, with the support of mass spectrometry. The different spectroscopic features of CDs could be associated to different compositional characteristics as the polydispersity of molecular components featuring blue CDs, opposed to the oligomer-like nature of green and yellow CDs. Pyrogenic CDs showed different fluorescence emission ranges, quantum yield and lifetimes, appealing for their possible applications in the fields of imaging, electronics and sensors

    Using a life course perspective to understand early labor market exits for people in their late 50s living in the UK

    This paper explores the reasons why people exit the UK labor market early and some of the barriers working against them returning. The specific focus is a qualitative exploration of three out of work individuals, approaching the age of 60, each of whom had experienced poverty and periods of worklessness during their lifetime. The fieldwork took place in 2016 and was part of a wider mixed methods study about retirement, which used data from the 1958 birth cohort study. Researchers used narrative interviews to uncover the lived experiences and realities of these three people’s lives, and applied a life course perspective to understand how the accumulation of advantages and disadvantages during their lives shapes their attitudes and expectations. The data also show the effects of money, health, and previous employment on their decision making, and how structures such as social class, gender, and poverty are represented in and through the stories they tell

    Observations on the reproductive cycle, age and growth of the salema, <em>Sarpa salpa</em> (Osteichthyes: Sparidae) along the western central coast of Italy

    La maduración sexual y crecimiento de Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1758) en las costas del Mediterráneo italiano (Italia central) fueron estudiadas a partir de la recolecta de ejemplares muertos accidentalmente (n = 105) como consecuencia de las explosiones submarinas acaecidas durante la construcción del puerto de Civitavecchia en 1999, así como de ejemplares recolectados mediante redes de arrastre (n = 339). Esta especie se caracteriza por un hermafroditismo protándrico, ocurriendo el proceso de cambio sexual entre los 24 y 31 cm TL, los cuales corresponden a un amplio rango de edades (3-7 años). La talla de maduración (L50) fue de 19,5 cm, siendo la casi la totalidad de los individuos eran de sexo masculino. Se observaron dos períodos diferentes de reproducción: uno en primavera, de marzo a mayo y otro en otoño, de finales de septiembre a noviembre. Se observó, durante el primer año, un crecimiento compensatorio ocurrido entre los individuos nacidos en los dos períodos. Se identificó en los otolitos un modelo anual y regular de deposición de anillos. Se observó el depósito de un anillo translúcido durante los meses invernales, mientras que otro opaco se formó durante los meses de verano. Las composición por edades y tallas retrocalculadas se utilizaron para estimar los parámetros de la ecuación de crecimiento de Von Bertalanffy, es decir: L∞ = 37,27 cm, K = 0,27 año-1 y t0 = -0,53 año. S. salpa demostró un crecimiento isométrico (b = 3,04; P = 0,84; t = 0,19)
