Dynamics of Electrons in Graded Semiconductors
I present a theory of electron dynamics in semiconductors with slowly varying
composition. I show that the frequency-dependent conductivity, required for the
description of transport and optical properties, can be obtained from a
knowledge of the band structures and momentum matrix elements of homogeneous
semiconductor alloys. New sum rules for the electronic oscillator strengths,
which apply within a given energy band or between any two bands, are derived,
and a general expression for the width of the intraband absorption peak is
given. Finally, the low-frequency dynamics is discussed, and a correspondence

Discovery of a Large-scale Wall in the Direction of Abell 22
We report on the discovery of a large-scale wall in the direction of Abell
22. Using photometric and spectroscopic data from the Las Campanas Observatory
and Anglo-Australian Telescope Rich Cluster Survey, Abell 22 is found to
exhibit a highly unusual and striking redshift distribution. We show that Abell
22 exhibits a foreground wall-like structure by examining the galaxy
distributions in both redshift space and on the colour-magnitude plane. A
search for other galaxies and clusters in the nearby region using the 2dF
Galaxy Redshift Survey database suggests that the wall-like structure is a
significant large-scale, non-virialized filament which runs between two other
Abell clusters either side of Abell 22. The filament stretches over at least
>40 Mpc in length and 10 Mpc in width at the redshift of Abell 22.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS letter
Adaptive Density Estimation on the Circle by Nearly-Tight Frames
This work is concerned with the study of asymptotic properties of
nonparametric density estimates in the framework of circular data. The
estimation procedure here applied is based on wavelet thresholding methods: the
wavelets used are the so-called Mexican needlets, which describe a nearly-tight
frame on the circle. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the -risk
function for these estimates, in particular its adaptivity, proving that its

Phase-Coherent Transport through a Mesoscopic System: A New Probe of Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior
A novel chiral interferometer is proposed that allows for a direct
measurement of the phase of the transmission coefficient for transport through
a variety of mesoscopic structures in a strong magnetic field. The effects of
electron-electron interaction on this phase is investigated with the use of
finite-size bosonization techniques combined with perturbation theory
resummation. New non-Fermi-liquid phenomena are predicted in the FQHE regime
that may be used to distinguish experimentally between Luttinger and Fermi

Aeronomy report no. 74: The Urbana meteor-radar system; design, development, and first observations
The design, development, and first observations of a high power meteor-radar system located near Urbana, Illinois are described. The roughly five-fold increase in usable echo rate compared to other facilities, along with automated digital data processing and interferometry measurement of echo arrival angles, permits unsurpassed observations of tidal structure and shorter period waves. Such observations are discussed. The technique of using echo decay rates to infer density and scale height and the method of inferring wind shear from radial acceleration are examined. An original experiment to test a theory of the Delta-region winter anomaly is presented
Mass accretion rates of clusters of galaxies: CIRS and HeCS
We use a new spherical accretion recipe tested on N-body simulations to
measure the observed mass accretion rate (MAR) of 129 clusters in the Cluster
Infall Regions in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (CIRS) and in the Hectospec
Cluster Survey (HeCS). The observed clusters cover the redshift range of
and the mass range of . Based on three-dimensional mass profiles of simulated
clusters reaching beyond the virial radius, our recipe returns MARs that agree
with MARs based on merger trees. We adopt this recipe to estimate the MAR of
real clusters based on measurements of the mass profile out to .
We use the caustic method to measure the mass profiles to these large radii. We
demonstrate the validity of our estimates by applying the same approach to a
set of mock redshift surveys of a sample of 2000 simulated clusters with a
median mass of as well as a sample
of 50 simulated clusters with a median mass of : the median MARs based on the caustic mass profiles of
the simulated clusters are unbiased and agree within with the median
MARs based on the real mass profile of the clusters. The MAR of the CIRS and
HeCS clusters increases with the mass and the redshift of the accreting
cluster, which is in excellent agreement with the growth of clusters in the

Evaluation of the CNS and cardiovascular effects of prolonged exposure to bromotrifluromethane (CBrF3)
The proposed use of bromotrifluoromethane (CBrF3) as a fire extinguishant in aircraft, spacecraft and submarines has stimulated increasing interest and research in the toxicological properties of this compound. In a spacecraft, because of its unique recirculating life support system, the introduction of CBrF3 by leakage or intentional discharge, will result in continuous exposure of crewman to low concentrations of this compound for periods of up to 7 days, or possibly even longer. The effects of low concentrations of CBrF3, under continuous exposure conditions, on the CNS and cardiovascular systems of animals to enable an assessment of these risks were investigated
Completeness in Photometric and Spectroscopic Searches for Clusters
We investigate, using simulated galaxy catalogues, the completeness of
searches for massive clusters of galaxies in redshift surveys or imaging
surveys with photometric redshift estimates, i.e. what fraction of clusters
(M>10^14/h Msun) are found in such surveys. We demonstrate that the matched
filter method provides an efficient and reliable means of identifying massive
clusters even when the redshift estimates are crude. In true redshift surveys
the method works extremely well. We demonstrate that it is possible to
construct catalogues with high completeness, low contamination and both varying
