Measurement of the velocity distribution of sputtered Na atoms from NaCl by Doppler shift laser fluorescence

    Get PDF
The velocity distribution of sputtered Na atoms from NaCI during 15 keV, Ar+ bombardment was measured by a Doppler shift laser fluorescence technique. Contrary to other measurements, the sputtered Na atoms were found to have a velocity distribution identical to that of a three-dimensional Maxwell-Boltzmann gas.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

Optical pulse compression based on enhanced frequency chirping

Through numerical simulations, we show that, under relatively general conditions, passage of an intense picosecond pulse through a single-mode optical fiber can cause the pulse to become strongly frequency broadened with a positive chirp (linear frequency sweep) describing essentially all of the energy of the output pulse. Also, because the optical fiber supports only a single transverse mode, the entire output beam profile has the same frequency modulation. These two features allow for unprecedented optical pulse compression.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

Nonlinear picosecond-pulse propagation through optical fibers with positive group velocity dispersion

The predictions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation have been tested by passing 5.5-psec optical pulses through a 70-m single-mode optical fiber. With use of a precise cross correlation technique based on pulse compression, dramatic reshaping of the input pulses into flat-topped, frequency-broadened, and positively chirped 20-psec output pulses with self-steepened fall times of less than 2 psec was observed. The observations are in good agreement with theory.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

Velocity distributions of sputtered excited atoms

The first direct measurements are reported of the velocity distributions of sputtered atoms in excited states with electronic configurations completely different from the ground state. In contrast to previous work, the measured distributions for both the singlet and triplet metastable D states of Ba atoms showed no energy thresholds and had most probable energies similar to those of sputtered ground-state atoms.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

Observation of the formation of the 0-pi pulse

We have measured with 0.5-psec resolution the reshaping of small-area 7-psec laser pulses to 0-pi pulses due to their passage through an optically thick sodium cell. The reshaped pulses have a picosecond oscillatory structure characteristic of 0-pi pulses that extends over more than 100 psec. These observations are compared in detail with the predictions of theory and good agreement is obtained.Peer reviewedElectrical and Computer Engineerin

Plasma and red blood cell protein maps: update 1993

    No full text
This publication updates the reference plasma and red blood cell protein maps obtained with immobilized pH gradients. Seventeen polypeptide spots or chains were partially characterized by direct N-terminal sequencing or by sequencing of peptides obtained from enzymatic digestion. Additional new polypeptides and previously known proteins are listed in a table and/or labeled on the protein maps, thus providing the 1993 update of the human plasma and red blood cell two-dimensional gel SWISS-2DPAGE database. SWISS-2DPAGE and the SWISS-PROT protein sequence databases are closely linked together through the use of common accession numbers
