Computing the BRST Operator Used in Quantization of Gauge Theories

    Get PDF
It is shown that for a large class of non-holonomic quantum mechanical systems one can make the computation of BRST charge fully algorithmic. Two computer algebra programs written in the language of {\tt REDUCE} are described. They are able to realize the complex calculations needed to determine the charge for general nonlinear algebras. Some interesting specific solutions are discussed.Comment: 13 pages, plain tex with vanilla.sty included at the end of the pape

Connecting Green's Functions in an Arbitrary Pair of Gauges and an Application to Planar Gauges

We establish a finite field-dependent BRS transformation that connects the Yang-Mills path-integrals with Faddeev-Popov effective actions for an arbitrary pair of gauges F and F'. We establish a result that relates an arbitrary Green's function [either a primary one or one that of an operator] in an arbitrary gauge F' to those in gauge F that are compatible to the ones in gauge F by its construction [in that the construction preserves expectation values of gauge-invariant observables]. We establish parallel results also for the planar gauge-Lorentz gauge connection.Comment: 19 page

Quantum gauge models without classical Higgs mechanism

    Get PDF
We examine the status of massive gauge theories, such as those usually obtained by spontaneous symmetry breakdown, from the viewpoint of causal (Epstein-Glaser) renormalization. The BRS formulation of gauge invariance in this framework, starting from canonical quantization of massive (as well as massless) vector bosons as fundamental entities, and proceeding perturbatively, allows one to rederive the reductive group symmetry of interactions, the need for scalar fields in gauge theory, and the covariant derivative. Thus the presence of higgs particles is explained without recourse to a Higgs(-Englert-Brout-Guralnik-Hagen-Kibble) mechanism. Along the way, we dispel doubts about the compatibility of causal gauge invariance with grand unified theories.Comment: 20 pages in two-column EPJC format, shortened version accepted for publication. Ultraviolet Complete Electroweak Model Without a Higgs Particle

An electroweak model with running coupling constants described by an energy dependent entire function is utraviolet complete and avoids unitarity violations for energies above 1 TeV. The action contains no physical scalar fields and no Higgs particle and the physical electroweak model fields are local and satisfy microcausality. The WW and ZZ masses are compatible with a symmetry breaking SU(2)L×U(1)Y→U(1)emSU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y \rightarrow U(1)_{\rm em}, which retains a massless photon. The vertex couplings possess an energy scale ΛW>1\Lambda_W > 1 TeV predicting scattering amplitudes that can be tested at the LHC.Comment: 19 pages, no figures, LaTex file. Hydrodynamic Long-Time tails From Anti de Sitter Space

For generic field theories at finite temperature, a power-law falloff of correlation functions of conserved currents at long times is a prediction of non-linear hydrodynamics. We demonstrate, through a one-loop computation in Einstein gravity in Anti de Sitter space, that this effect is reproduced by the dynamics of black hole horizons. The result is in agreement with the gauge-gravity correspondence.Comment: 31 pages, references adde

Developing a Smart Semantic Web with Linked Data and Models for Near-Real-Time Monitoring of Red Tides in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico

In recent decades, the technology used to detect and quantify harmful algal blooms (commonly known as red tides) and characterize their physicochemical environment has improved considerably. A remaining challenge is effective delivery of the information generated from these advances in a user-friendly way to a diverse group of stakeholders. Based on existing infrastructure, we establish a Web-based system for near-real-time tracking of red tides caused by the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, which annually threatens human and environmental health in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. The system integrates different data products through a custom-made Web interface. Specifically, three types of data products are fused: 1) near-real-time ocean color imagery tailored for red tide monitoring; 2) K. brevis cell abundance determined by sample analysis; and 3) ocean currents from a nested and validated numerical model. These products are integrated and made available to users in Keyhole Markup Language (KML) format, which can be navigated, interpreted, and overlaid with other products in Google Earth. This integration provides users with the current status of red tide occurrence (e.g., location, severity, and spatial extent) while presenting a simple way to estimate bloom trajectory, thus delivering an effective method for near-real-time tracking of red tides
